  • A genome-wide association study with 1,126,563 individuals identifies new risk loci for Alzheimer’s disease
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Nature. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 53:9, s. 1276-1282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Late-onset Alzheimer’s disease is a prevalent age-related polygenic disease that accounts for 50–70% of dementia cases. Currently, only a fraction of the genetic variants underlying Alzheimer’s disease have been identified. Here we show that increased sample sizes allowed identification of seven previously unidentified genetic loci contributing to Alzheimer’s disease. This study highlights microglia, immune cells and protein catabolism as relevant to late-onset Alzheimer’s disease, while identifying and prioritizing previously unidentified genes of potential interest. We anticipate that these results can be included in larger meta-analyses of Alzheimer’s disease to identify further genetic variants that contribute to Alzheimer’s pathology.

  • Spectroscopy of T=3/2 Mirror Nuclei via Two-step Fragmentation using RISING
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica. Series B: Elementary Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics, Statistical Physics, Theory of Relativity, Field Theory. - 0587-4254. ; 36:4, s. 1253-1257
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two two-step fragmentation reactions were performed using RISING to populate excited states in A approximate to 50 mirror nuclei near to the proton-drip line, in order to test isospin symmetry. The experiments were designed to observe gamma decays of excited states in the mirror nuclei Ni-53(28)25/Mn-53(25)28, which have a large value of total isospin (T = 3/2). In the continuing off-line analysis, gamma transitions have been observed in Ni-54 indicating that two-step fragmentation is a successful technique for spectroscopic investigations of proton-rich nuclear systems in this mass region.

  • Warming response of peatland CO2 sink is sensitive to seasonality in warming trends
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Climate Change. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1758-6798 .- 1758-678X. ; 12:8, s. 743-749
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Peatlands have acted as net CO2 sinks over millennia, exerting a global climate cooling effect. Rapid warming at northern latitudes, where peatlands are abundant, can disturb their CO2 sink function. Here we show that sensitivity of peatland net CO2 exchange to warming changes in sign and magnitude across seasons, resulting in complex net CO2 sink responses. We use multiannual net CO2 exchange observations from 20 northern peatlands to show that warmer early summers are linked to increased net CO2 uptake, while warmer late summers lead to decreased net CO2 uptake. Thus, net CO2 sinks of peatlands in regions experiencing early summer warming, such as central Siberia, are more likely to persist under warmer climate conditions than are those in other regions. Our results will be useful to improve the design of future warming experiments and to better interpret large-scale trends in peatland net CO2 uptake over the coming few decades.

  • Recent Asian origin of chytrid fungi causing global amphibian declines
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 360:6389, s. 621-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Globalized infectious diseases are causing species declines worldwide, but their source often remains elusive. We used whole-genome sequencing to solve the spatiotemporal origins of themost devastating panzootic to date, caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, a proximate driver of global amphibian declines. We traced the source of B. dendrobatidis to the Korean peninsula, where one lineage, BdASIA-1, exhibits the genetic hallmarks of an ancestral population that seeded the panzootic. We date the emergence of this pathogen to the early 20th century, coinciding with the global expansion of commercial trade in amphibians, and we show that intercontinental transmission is ongoing. Our findings point to East Asia as a geographic hotspot for B. dendrobatidis biodiversity and the original source of these lineages that now parasitize amphibians worldwide.

  • Exploring non-verbal gaze behavior in groups mediated by an adaptive robot
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction. - New York, NY, USA : IEEE Computer Society. ; , s. 357-361
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, non-verbal behavior in diversely-skilled groups was observed while participating in a collaborative educational game with a humanoid robot. Research has indicated that a mediating robot gaze can equalize the verbal contributions from each differently skilled participant, promoting inclusion and learning. The experiment results were further analyzed, extending to non-verbal effects. The initial results from two experiments under different robot gaze behavior indicate that modifications in the robot gaze can lead to different gaze behavior in participants. It was observed that a gaze mediating behavior in the robot led to increased gaze change frequency among participants as well as more time spent mirroring the robot's gaze. These initial results show promise in how a robot can balance attention in a collaborative learning environment.
