  • Two tales of cardiovascular risks-middle-aged women living in Sweden and Scotland : a cross-sectional comparative study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: BMJ Open. - London : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 2044-6055. ; 7:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: To compare cardiovascular risk factors as well as rates of cardiovascular diseases in middle-aged women from urban areas in Scotland and Sweden.DESIGN: Comparative cross-sectional study.SETTING: Data from the general population in urban areas of Scotland and the general population in two major Swedish cities in southeast Sweden, south of Stockholm.PARTICIPANTS: Comparable data of middle-aged women (40-65 years) from the Scottish Health Survey (n=6250) and the Swedish QWIN study (n=741) were merged together into a new dataset (n=6991 participants).MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: We compared middle-aged women in urban areas in Sweden and Scotland regarding risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD), CVD diagnosis, anthropometrics, psychological distress and lifestyle.RESULTS: In almost all measurements, there were significant differences between the countries, favouring the Swedish women. Scottish women demonstrated a higher frequency of alcohol consumption, smoking, obesity, low vegetable consumption, a sedentary lifestyle and also more psychological distress. For doctor-diagnosed coronary heart disease, there were also significant differences, with a higher prevalence among the Scottish women.CONCLUSIONS: This is one of the first studies that clearly shows that Scottish middle-aged women are particularly affected by a worse profile of CVD risks. The profound differences in CVD risk and outcome frequency in the two populations are likely to have arisen from differences in the two groups of women's social, cultural, political and economic environments.

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation analyzes scientific youth culture at Swedish secondary grammar schools during an era when the faith in science, technology and progress was strong. The aim is to study the production of meaning among the students and the everyday practices they were involved in. The students of the secondary grammar schools were involved in a character-building and educative process and they often described themselves as an elite among the youth of the nation. In addition to this, the students of the natural sciences described themselves as future leaders, mainly because they took science and technology to be the most modern and rational school subjects. The science students did extra-curricular laboratory work, excursions and longer journeys. I argue that the participants fostered each other in the ability to perform scientific observations through these practices. The students often described a certain set of norms and ideals that made an activity ”scientific”. In order to be a scientist they had to live up to the collective scientific norms of precision and exactness as well as to the hard-working and altruistic ideal of the individual heroes of science. In conclusion this dissertation studies how scientific norms, ideals and world views got shaped and reshaped in a local scientific culture. It shows how young scientists taught each other that science was a modern, objective, male, visionary, and rule governed activity.

  • On the Outskirts of Physics : Eva von Bahr's Scientific Networks 1909-1914
  • 2007
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish physicist Eva von Bahr (1874-1962) was scientifically successful. After her dissertation (1909) she became the first woman to be hired as an assistant at the Physics Department at Uppsala University. In 1913 she went to Berlin and collaborated with German physicists. She also became close friends with Lise Meitner. In 1914, she, in her own words, “said goodbye” to science and took up work as a teacher in a rural folk school in Sweden. Von Bahr suffered under the Swedish constitution, which prohibited women from holding academic positions (this writing was abolished in 1925). She applied for professorship twice, but her applications were not taken under consideration. The first argument in this paper is that scientific networks were important in giving von Bahr opportunities to do work as a physicist despite the legal obstacles. I will discuss the importance of the Uppsala Physics department and professor Knut Ångström who hired her as an assistant. I will also discuss the fruitful network in Berlin that von Bahr benefited from. The second main argument in this paper is that von Bahrs position in the scientific networks was gendered and paradoxical: it made her an insider and outsider at the same time. She was part of important scientific communities and worked in highly esteemed environments. But in her own memories and letters she claims to never have wanted a scientific career, and she quit her work even though she could have continued doing it. Her collaborations with scientific elites coexisted with a position and self perception as an outsider, mainly because she was a woman. The overall argument in this paper is that network theories will be richer if we add a gender perspective and an analysis of the power structures. This can be achieved by starting at the outskirts of scientific communities where people like Eva von Bahr lived their scientific lives.
