  • Orbital and spin magnetic moments of ferrocene encapsulated in metallicity sorted single-walled carbon nanotubes
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physica status solidi. B, Basic research. - : Wiley-VCH Verlag Berlin. - 0370-1972 .- 1521-3951. ; 249:12, s. 2424-2427
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nature of the electronic and local magnetic properties of ferrocene (FeCp2) filled single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) has been investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Metallic, semiconducting, and unsorted ferrocene-filled tubes have been studied in different conditions of temperature and magnetic field. XMCD signal becomes evident with the application of a magnetic field at low temperature. We find that the molecular states of ferrocene interact with SWCNT of different metallicities. A paramagnetic behavior of encapsulated ferrocene is observed from the magnetic field dependent XMCD measurements which is consistent with theoretical predictions.

  • Orbital and spin magnetic moments of transforming one-dimensional iron inside metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 87:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The orbital and spin magnetic properties of iron inside metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes are studied by means of local x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and bulk superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The iron-nanotube hybrids are initially ferrocene filled single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) of different metallicities. We show that the ferrocene's molecular orbitals interact differently with the SWCNT of different metallicities with no significant XMCD response. At elevated temperatures the ferrocene molecules react with each other to form cementite nanoclusters. The XMCD at various magnetic fields reveal that the orbital and/or spin magnetic moments of the encapsulated iron are altered drastically as the transformation to the 1D clusters takes place. The orbital and spin magnetic moments are both found to be larger in filled semiconducting nanotubes than in the metallic sample. This could mean that the magnetic polarization of the encapsulated material depends on the metallicity of the tubes. From a comparison between the iron 3d magnetic moments and the bulk magnetism measured by SQUID, we conclude that the delocalized magnetisms dominate the magnetic properties of these 1D hybrid nanostructures.

  • Quantifying Spin-Mixed States in Ferromagnets
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 127:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We quantify the presence of spin-mixed states in ferromagnetic 3D transition metals by precise measurement of the orbital moment. While central to phenomena such as Elliot-Yafet scattering, quantification of the spin-mixing parameter has hitherto been confined to theoretical calculations. We demonstrate that this information is also available by experimental means. Comparison of ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism results show that Kittel's original derivation of the spectroscopic g factor requires modification, to include spin mixing of valence band states. Our results are supported by ab initio relativistic electronic structure theory.

  • Mn-Rich MnSb2Te4 : A Topological Insulator with Magnetic Gap Closing at High Curie Temperatures of 45-50 K
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0935-9648 .- 1521-4095. ; 33:42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ferromagnetic topological insulators exhibit the quantum anomalous Hall effect, which is potentially useful for high-precision metrology, edge channel spintronics, and topological qubits. The stable 2+ state of Mn enables intrinsic magnetic topological insulators. MnBi2Te4 is, however, antiferromagnetic with 25 K Neel temperature and is strongly n-doped. In this work, p-type MnSb2Te4, previously considered topologically trivial, is shown to be a ferromagnetic topological insulator for a few percent Mn excess. i) Ferromagnetic hysteresis with record Curie temperature of 45-50 K, ii) out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy, iii) a 2D Dirac cone with the Dirac point close to the Fermi level, iv) out-of-plane spin polarization as revealed by photoelectron spectroscopy, and v) a magnetically induced bandgap closing at the Curie temperature, demonstrated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), are shown. Moreover, a critical exponent of the magnetization beta approximate to 1 is found, indicating the vicinity of a quantum critical point. Ab initio calculations reveal that Mn-Sb site exchange provides the ferromagnetic interlayer coupling and the slight excess of Mn nearly doubles the Curie temperature. Remaining deviations from the ferromagnetic order open the inverted bulk bandgap and render MnSb2Te4 a robust topological insulator and new benchmark for magnetic topological insulators.
