- This essay is divided in two parts. The first part gives an overview on fairy-related traditions in the high mountains of South Asia. It concentrates on Nuristan and Dardistan2 as well as on Garhwal (there especially on Bangan3) and highlights similarities and differences between these two areas. Moreover, it looks at more distant parallels and at relationships between fairy cults and Hindu Tantrism. The second part presents a recently recorded hymn to the fairy 'Daughter of the hills' and discusses its functions and background.

Dessen unbeschadet bilden das wachsende Bewusstsein und der Kampf der Dalits den Kern seiner Werke. Dank des Übersetzers und seiner Anmerkungen kann das Gedicht auch bei uns seine Wirkung entfalten, das für ein indischen Lese- und Hörpublikum geschrieben worden ist.

Towards a New Language : Christology in Early Modern Marathi, Konkani, and Hindustani

- This study examines the development of Christological discourses in Konkani, Marathi, and Hindustani in the 16th, 17th, and early 18th century. It explores a great deal of both Hindu and Christian sources, of which many are unedited and largely overlooked manuscripts. Applying a hermeneutic method complemented with insights from conceptual history and other fields, the study presents literature written by European authors in the abovementioned languages as results of a process of understanding and translation. The missionaries tried to understand Indian languages and religion and translate and express Christian thought in the words and discourses of those languages. The source material discussed in the first part of the study includes transliterations, translations, and descriptions of Hindu literature made and studied by early modern missionary workers in and outside of the colonial territories. These texts help us to understand some of the earliest informed European conceptions of Hindu thought and practice and follow the strategical choices missionaries made in translating Christian thought into languages dominated by other religions and philosophies. The second part of the study analyses a selection of early modern works produced by Christian authors: dictionaries, catechisms, and other prose texts in variants of Konkani, Marathi, and Hindustani; and poetic literature in Marathi. The authors of these works include Jesuits of various European nationalities, a French Capuchin priest, and an officer of the Dutch East India Company. More specifically, the focus is on terminology and language use pertaining to Christology, a theological discourse comprising a conceptual field meticulously carved out through centuries of Greco-Roman philosophy and Christian theology. It is therefore particularly well suited for highlighting semantic changes – translation loss or translation gain – occurring when a system of ideas is translated into a new language for the first time.

Engaging Advaita : Conceptualising liberating knowledge in the face of Western modernity

- This dissertation is a study of modern Indian philosophy. It examines three engaging articulations of the Advaitic notion of liberating knowledge or brahmajñāna provided by three prominent Indian philosophers of the twentieth century, namely, Badrīnāth Śukla (1898-1988), Krishnachandra Bhattacharyya (1875-1949), and Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888-1975). Particular attention is paid to the existing relation between their distinctive conceptualisations of liberating knowledge and the doxastic attitudes that these authors professed towards the Sanskrit intellectual past of South Asia and the presence of the Western Other.In the main, it argues that the profound differences to be found, on the one hand, in Śukla’s elucidation of this key Advaitic notion and, on the other, in Bhattacharyya’s and Radhakrishnan’s take on the same, betray their commitment to two radically different doxastic attitudes. Classifying these into (a) non-dialogical and (b) dialogical in relation to the Western Other as well as into (c) exegetic and (d) hermeneutic in relation to the Sanskrit intellectual past of South Asia, it contends that, in comparison to the conceptual scheme and the parameters of intelligibility that shaped and underpinned the precolonial Advaitic discourse on brahmajñāna in Sanskrit, there is a certain kind of epistemic discontinuity in the dialogical cum hermeneutic stance taken by Bhattacharyya and Radhakrishnan that is not to be found in the non-dialogical cum exegetic engagement enacted by Śukla. It suggests that this particular sort of discontinuity, absent as it is from Śukla’s elucidation of the process of knowing Brahman, reflects the far-reaching commitment of Krishnachandra Bhattacharyya and Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan to appropriate the precolonial Advaitic notion of liberating knowledge hermeneutically and to conceptualise it in the face of Western modernity, that is, rendering it meaningful in terms and within the parameters of intelligibility of the Western Other in order to contest what they took to be a troublesome predicament of Western modernity.By examining their ways of engaging with the Advaitic notion of liberating knowledge, this dissertation contributes to the on-going debate about the nature and the driving forces of modern Indian philosophy.
