  • SICStus Prolog user's manual, version 2.1 #8
  • 1993. - 1
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This Manual corresponds to SICStus Prolog release 2.1. #8 Prolog is a simple but powerful programming language developed at the University of Marseilles (Prolog : Manuel de Reference et d'Utilisation by P.Roussel, Groupe d'Intelligence Artificielle, Marseille-Luminy, 1975), as a practical tool for programming in Logic (Logic for Problem Solving by R.A. Kowalski, DCL Memo 75, Dept. of Artificial Intelligence, University of Edinburgh, March, 1974.)) From a user's point of view the major attraction of the language is ease of programming. Clear, readable, concise programs can be written quickly with few errors. This manual describes a Prolog system developed at the Swedish Institute of Computer Science in collaboration with Ericsson Telecom AB, NobelTech Systems AB, Infologics AB and Televerket under the IT4 program. The system consists of a WAM emulator written in C, a library and runtime system written in C and Prolog and an interpreter and a compiler written in Prolog. The Prolog engine is a Warren Abstract Machine (WAM) emulator defined by D:H:D: Warren in An Abstract Prolog Instruction Set, Tech. Note 309, International, Menlo Park, CA, 1983. Two modes of compilation are available: in-core i.e. incremental, and file-to-file.

  • A novel common variant in DCST2 is associated with length in early life and height in adulthood.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Human molecular genetics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1460-2083 .- 0964-6906. ; 24:4, s. 1155-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Common genetic variants have been identified for adult height, but not much is known about the genetics of skeletal growth in early life. To identify common genetic variants that influence fetal skeletal growth, we meta-analyzed 22 genome-wide association studies (Stage 1; N = 28 459). We identified seven independent top single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (P < 1 × 10(-6)) for birth length, of which three were novel and four were in or near loci known to be associated with adult height (LCORL, PTCH1, GPR126 and HMGA2). The three novel SNPs were followed-up in nine replication studies (Stage 2; N = 11 995), with rs905938 in DC-STAMP domain containing 2 (DCST2) genome-wide significantly associated with birth length in a joint analysis (Stages 1 + 2; β = 0.046, SE = 0.008, P = 2.46 × 10(-8), explained variance = 0.05%). Rs905938 was also associated with infant length (N = 28 228; P = 5.54 × 10(-4)) and adult height (N = 127 513; P = 1.45 × 10(-5)). DCST2 is a DC-STAMP-like protein family member and DC-STAMP is an osteoclast cell-fusion regulator. Polygenic scores based on 180 SNPs previously associated with human adult stature explained 0.13% of variance in birth length. The same SNPs explained 2.95% of the variance of infant length. Of the 180 known adult height loci, 11 were genome-wide significantly associated with infant length (SF3B4, LCORL, SPAG17, C6orf173, PTCH1, GDF5, ZNFX1, HHIP, ACAN, HLA locus and HMGA2). This study highlights that common variation in DCST2 influences variation in early growth and adult height.

  • Nutrient balancing or spring flush – What determines spruce bark stripping level by red deer?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Forest Ecology and Management. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0378-1127 .- 1872-7042. ; 520
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The distribution and population density of red deer (Cervus elaphus) are increasing in several regions of Europe. The deer may cause severe damage in commercial forestry and agriculture. Bark stripping is the main problem in forests, especially on Norway spruce (Picea abies), and is thought to mostly occur during winter when other forage is scarce. It has been suggested that an imbalance in the nutrient intake, and especially a diet including high amounts of easily-digestible macronutrients, such as agricultural crops, can lead to an increased urge to consume bark. Feeding on brassicas, for example rapeseed (Brassica napus) might have this effect. The aim with this study was to investigate the relationship between intake of rapeseed and bark stripping on Norway spruce by red deer during early spring. We did this by a controlled feeding experiment with four groups of captive red deer in southern Sweden. All groups were given spruce logs every week, while only two groups had access to freshly harvested rapeseed plants. In addition, influence of air temperature and forage nutritional composition was taken into account. Our results show that red deer bark stripping can be considerable not only during winter but also during spring green-up. We found no significant influence of rapeseed on bark stripping performed by the deer. However, at a threshold temperature, deer suddenly started to ingest large amounts of bark biomass, coinciding with a significant change in the bark's concentration of starch. We suggest that the lack of effect of rapeseed feeding can partly be explained by overshadowing effects caused by such seasonal changes of bark characteristics, and partly by the fact that the rapeseed plants in our study contained lower than expected concentrations of easily-digestible macronutrients (apart from protein). We conclude that the risk of damage on spruce can be especially high during certain periods, something that is important to consider when mitigating bark stripping. However, several interactive effects are involved and must be considered in order to more efficiently mitigate damage. © 2022 The Author(s)

  • Small-Scale Renewable Energy Converters for Battery Charging
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Marine Science and Engineering. - : MDPI. - 2077-1312. ; 6:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents two wave energy concepts for small-scale electricity generation. In the presented case, these concepts are installed on the buoy of a heaving, point-absorbing wave energy converter (WEC) for large scale electricity production. In the studied WEC, developed by Uppsala University, small-scale electricity generation in the buoy is needed to power a tidal compensating system designed to increase the performance of the WEC in areas with high tides. The two considered and modeled concepts are an oscillating water column (OWC) and a heaving point absorber. The results indicate that the OWC is too small for the task and does not produce enough energy. On the other hand, the results show that a hybrid system composed of a small heaving point absorber combined with a solar energy system would be able to provide a requested minimum power of around 37.7W on average year around. The WEC and solar panel complement each other, as the WEC produces enough energy by itself during wintertime (but not in the summer), while the solar panel produces enough energy in the summer (but not in the winter).

  • Longitudinal associations between sensory and cognitive functioning in adults 60 years or older in Sweden and Denmark
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Archives of gerontology and geriatrics (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0167-4943 .- 1872-6976. ; 121
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to explore the bidirectional, longitudinal associations between self-reported sensory functions (hearing/vision) and cognitive functioning among older adults in Sweden and Denmark during the period 2004-2017.METHODS: The study is based on data from The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe and consists of 3164 persons aged 60 to 93 years. Within-person associations between sensory and cognitive functions were estimated using random intercept cross-lagged panel models.RESULTS: The results indicated that cognitive and sensory functions were associated within their respective domains over time. The results on the bidirectional associations between sensory functions and cognition over time showed weak and statistically non-significant estimates.CONCLUSION: Our study showed no clear evidence for cross-lagged effects between sensory functions and cognitive functioning. Important to note, however, is that using longitudinal data to estimate change within persons is a demanding statistical test and various factors may have contributed to the absence of conclusive evidence in our study. We discuss several of these factors.

  • The effects of uterine artery embolization with a new degradable microsphere in an experimental study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Acta Radiologica. - : SAGE Publications. - 0284-1851 .- 1600-0455. ; 58:11, s. 1334-1341
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Transarterial particle embolization is a common treatment of uterine fibroids, aiming to obtain ischemia resulting in shrinking of the fibroid with preservation of normal uterine tissue. Embolization with non-degradable microspheres is established, but causes permanent occlusion of the arteries, affecting both the uterus as well as the fibroids. Purpose To evaluate in vivo degradation, local tissue effects, and possible recanalization following intra-arterial deposition of the new, degradable starch microspheres (DSM), in a short-term experimental pilot study. Material and Methods Under general anesthesia, unilateral transarterial embolization of the uterine artery (UA) with DSM 500-700 μm was performed in five female sheep. The animals underwent renewed angiography at different intervals after embolization (19-65 h) and were subsequently sacrificed. Histological examination was performed. Results Embolization with absent flow in the UA could be completed in five of six animals. At final angiographic evaluation, recanalization of the embolized arteries was evident in three sheep. At the gross postmortem examination, edema and discoloration indicating ischemia of the uterus at the embolized side, was observed in all the sheep. At histopathological examination, different stages of DSM degradation in the arterial branches were observed in both endometrium and myometrium. Mild-to-moderate vasculitis and mild-to-extensive ischemic changes were present along with degeneration of the uterine glands. Conclusion This short-term pilot study proved efficacy of embolization with DSM causing ischemic changes in the embolized organ, but also degradation of the DSM with subsequent recanalization of the embolized arteries.

  • Genome-wide meta-analysis identifies 11 new loci for anthropometric traits and provides insights into genetic architecture
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 45:5, s. 501-U69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Approaches exploiting trait distribution extremes may be used to identify loci associated with common traits, but it is unknown whether these loci are generalizable to the broader population. In a genome-wide search for loci associated with the upper versus the lower 5th percentiles of body mass index, height and waist-to-hip ratio, as well as clinical classes of obesity, including up to 263,407 individuals of European ancestry, we identified 4 new loci (IGFBP4, H6PD, RSRC1 and PPP2R2A) influencing height detected in the distribution tails and 7 new loci (HNF4G, RPTOR, GNAT2, MRPS33P4, ADCY9, HS6ST3 and ZZZ3) for clinical classes of obesity. Further, we find a large overlap in genetic structure and the distribution of variants between traits based on extremes and the general population and little etiological heterogeneity between obesity subgroups.
