- Cities are experiencing numerous challenges, adversely affecting human health and wellbeing. Urban green space provides ecosystem services that are important to meet urban challenges. One type of urban green space is private gardens (yards) that make up an essential part of many urban areas. Gardens can support urban biodiversity and provide cultural ecosystem services (CES) to its owner. However, the provision of garden benefits depends on garden size, design and management. This study aims to explore private gardens contribution to urban biodiversity and garden owners’ wellbeing (in terms of CES), and to understand the influence of urban planning and garden design and management. We use a conceptual framework to illustrate complexities and interlinkages: the garden ‘human-nature’ nexus. The study is based on a garden land-use inventory and interviews with 35 garden owners in Lund, Sweden. Results show that urban development influence garden's biodiversity potential by limiting available space or garden vegetation. New properties were mainly covered by buildings and paved surfaces and their small gardens contained few biodiversity features and large trees. Garden owners used multiple information channels to gain inspiration and knowledge, and aesthetic and edibility are important plant qualities governing garden plant choice. Many garden owners experienced gardens problems that influence design and management. The most important garden CES were social bonds, recreation, nature experiences and relaxation. Age and gender influence both garden CES and garden design and management. We conclude that private gardens have a potential to function as multifunctional spaces, but to harness their full potential there is a need to transform how we plan, develop, manage and not at least recognize private green space. We argue that the garden ‘human-nature’ nexus can help to illustrate the important interlinkages existing between e.g. urban planning, biodiversity and garden ES, and to foster sustainable urban green space governance.

- The National Heritage Board (Riksantikvarieämbetet) and Collegium Antiquitatum were established during the seventeenth century to safeguard the historical and antiquarian interests of the Swedish state. The civil servants who worked within these institutions were called antiquarians, and they were given the task of seeking out those ancient remains with which ”the fatherland could be illustrated.” The assignment was both scientific and political. Antiquarians were supposed to devote themselves to archaeology and to follow the scientific conventions of their times. At the same time they were expected to give a positive political picture of Sweden as a great power in their writings. This dissertation deals with how the antiquarians carried out this task.The Swedish state supported the work of the antiquarians in various ways. The antiquarians were given travel passes so that they could make journeys throughout the realm and take inventories of the ancient remains. They composed official decrees and announcements that were read from the pulpits. The antiquarians were also instructed to undertake systematic inventories of ancient remains. The work was discussed in the Riksdag in 1668 at the behest of the state. All means and channels were used to create enthusiasm and support for this work throughout the kingdom.Using the theories on ethnies and ethnic formation formulated by the British scholar Anthony D. Smith as the departure point, this dissertation takes a different stand than earlier research on the use of history and nation-building. Some scholars have expressed doubt as to whether the use of history played a role in the process of building the Swedish state and nation during the early modern era. The dissertation shows this doubt to be groundless. The use of history which was part of the work of antiquarians in the seventeenth century played an important role in the propaganda directed towards foreign countries. The use of history was also of significance for the national striving for integration that was directed to subjects within the Swedish realm.

Handledarkollegiets betydelse för utbildningen på forskarnivå

- Denna ministudie utgör en rapport på en högskolepedagogisk kurs vid Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet. Studien behandlar handledar-kollegiet som fenomen inom den högre utbildningen i Sverige och utforskar handledarkollegiets olika organisations- och verksamhets-former liksom dess olika funktioner inom forskarutbildningen. Syftet med studien är att påbörja en mer ingående diskussion om handledar-kollegiets betydelse, detta för att inspirera till vidare högskolepedago-gisk forskning på området, men också för att skapa ett diskussions underlag för Avdelningen för agrarhistoria, vid vilken författaren verkar, och där det finns funderingar på att bilda ett handledarkollegium.Undersökningen har visat att handledarkollegiet har många värden. Undersökningarna har redogjort för handledarkollegiets många ad-ministrativa, pedagogiska och sociala funktioner, och belyst de olika betydelser som det kan ha för handledarna och doktoranderna, liksom studierektorn, institutionsledningen och ämnesinstitutionen som helhet. Undersökningarna har också visat att handledarkollegiet kan ha olika funktioner och betydelser, beroende på hur det är organiserat.

Retrospektiv diagnosticering inom veterinärmedicinhistoria – exemplet boskapspest

- Swedish historians of veterinary medicine have traditionally made little use of diagnosis methods. This study is an attempt to develop a methodological framework for the use of retrospective diagnosis, i.e. a modern procedural approach, of early modern epizootic diseases, known in historical records as bovine diseases or cattle plagues. Although the method has broad application, the specific historical example discussed here is rinderpest in SwedenFinland in the eighteenth century.The proposed method consists of six separate components. The first component is the identification of the medical information needed to make an accurate modern diagnosis distinguished from its differential diagnoses. The second component consists in the identification of information actually available in historical sources. The third and the fourth component are the necessary evaluation of this information from both a medical and a source critical perspective. The fifth component is a test of the modern diagnosis against the available historical sources. The final component is a discussion of the validity of the test in the context of previous evaluations.The retrospective diagnosis method introduced here can be used with advantage with many types of primary sources, varying in character and information content. Several examples are discussed. Other researchers will judge which historical sources will be most pertinent to their specific investigations. They are invited to develop the method presented here further, both to suit specific projects and to reflect future changes in the discipline of veterinary history.
