  • Family formation and earnings
  • 2007
  • In: Paper presented at the Social change and Social Professions conference in Parma in March 15-17, 2007..
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The overall goal of this study is to find out what impact work, education and the individual life story have on individual’s transition to parenthood in contemporary multiethnic Sweden. Does family formation differ between individuals with Swedish and individuals with other ethnic background? The study is based on interviews with a life story approach with three different groups of couples that recently have become parents (first child 6-15 months). The groups are young adults with parents born in Sweden, young adults with parents born in Turkey and a mixed group of couples where one part has parents born in Sweden and one in Turkey. The main focus is to explore why these couples have taken the decision to become parents at this stage of their lives. Which kinds of considerations, experiences and knowledge are important for their choices? What does it mean to become a parent, how does individual and collective structures interact in the decision to become a parent, how does men and women balance independence and autonomy with class and ethnicity taken into account, how does men and women balance their individual versus the collective family project? The study deals with commonalities and differences between the three groups in relation to the Swedish welfare system and to traditions in each group based on culture, nationality and family traditions. The analysis shows so far that starting a family is much more of an individual life project for the Swedish group of parents. The Swedish social policy and insurance system seem to have an impact on their way of acting. Economy, work and housing conditions are very important for their decision. For the Turkish group starting a family is much more of a collective project related to culture and family traditions. They do not have the same reliability on the welfare state but more on their own families. The mixed group have more of negotiations and conflicts, trying to balance their different views of family life. Key words: family life, welfare, autonomy/dependency, ethnicity

  • The presence of the absent father; how lone mothers with sons construct and animate the absent father through narratives
  • 2008
  • In: European Journal of Social Work. - 1369-1457. ; 11:4, s. 369-381
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article builds upon results from an empirical study of nine cases where single mothers and their teenage sons have reflected on the relationship to the absent father and on his significance for the family. The results have led us to reflect further on how the construction of a father figure is shaped. The cases are selected from ongoing interventions from the Social Services. The father’s absence varies from always to the child’s first year till seven years or more. Through analysis of the different cases of dyad-mother-son, their narratives and their joint construction of a father figure, the dyad transforms into a triad with the presence of the absent father. Also discussed is the question of which underlying conditions contribute to the need for a joint construction of the father. Further, doubt is cast on the one-sided gender perspective that presupposes young men’s need for an adult man as a model of masculinity. The analysis is made towards the Swedish legislation emphasising the importance of ascribed biological parenthood, meaning that fathers right to joint custody and to visit the child have been strengthened, along with the creation of a state-controlled fatherhood. Keywords: lone mothers; absent fathers; male role models; joint father-figure; narratives

  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Some patients in nursing homes require extra attention to enable staff todetect and manage deterioration at an early stage. Nursing skills are vital to makesystematic observations and assessments of a patient’s condition. It is challenging fornurses in nursing homes to make professional decisions without being able to consultother nurses. To improve the quality and safety of health care for patients and theirrelatives, the focus must be on working to ensure patient safety in nursing homes.Simulation-based learning can be one way to increase reflection on patient safety anddevelop health professionals’ knowledge, skills and attitudes, while protecting patientsfrom unnecessary risks. Simulation-based learning as a method in medical educa-tion offers activities that mimic a clinical environment, where students can practiceprocedures and decision-making and where their critical thinking can be enhancedthrough role-play, videos or simulators. While simulation often takes place in a sim-ulation center, in situ simulation refers to a learning activity that takes place in par-ticipants’ everyday work environment where they actually provide patient care. Inthis chapter, we aim to describe nurses’ experiences of in situ simulation and theirsubsequent reflections on patient safety in nursing homes. Data were collected fromtwo focus groups with 5–6 nurses per group. The transcribed material was analyzedusing qualitative content analysis, and two categories were identified that describedthe nurses’ experiences: “to doubt oneself ” and “being dependent on others”.

    • OBJECTIVE: To study symptom panorama in students, to identify undiagnosed iron deficiency, and to evaluate any changes in symptoms and laboratory test results after treatment with iron supplementation. DESIGN: Descriptive and prospective, interventional study. SETTING: Healthcare in upper secondary school. INTERVENTION: Treatment with iron supplementation for a period of 3 months. SUBJECTS: Students in the first grade of one upper secondary school. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Frequency of iron deficiency related to symptoms measured by a questionnaire (30 questions) on symptoms related to quality of life and 9 questions about diet and exercise. RESULTS: Iron deficiency was diagnosed in 12% of the students (two or more abnormal laboratory tests) and in 61% of the students one or more laboratory tests were abnormal. Symptoms of vertigo/ dizziness were significantly more common in students with iron deficiency. After iron supplementation there was a significant increase in s-ferritin levels and a decrease in s-transferrin levels, with an accompanying significant reduction of the symptom scores of vertigo/dizziness, irritability, depressive symptoms, and indisposition. CONCLUSIONS: Symptoms of vertigo/dizziness were significantly more common in students with iron deficiency. Iron supplementation reduced the symptoms of vertigo/dizziness, irritability, depressive symptoms, and indisposition.
