  • Selection of candidate coding DNA barcoding regions for use on land plants
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Botanical journal of the Linnean Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0024-4074 .- 1095-8339. ; 159:1, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An in silico screen of 41 of the 81 coding regions of the Nicotiana plastid genome generated a shortlist of 12 candidates as DNA barcoding loci for land plants. These loci were evaluated for amplification and sequence variation against a reference set of 98 land plant taxa. The deployment of multiple primers and a modified multiplexed tandem polymerase chain reaction yielded 85-94% amplification across taxa, and mean sequence differences between sister taxa of 6.1 from 156 bases of accD to 22 from 493 bases of matK. We conclude that loci should be combined for effective diagnosis, and recommend further investigation of the following six loci: matK, rpoB, rpoC1, ndhJ, ycf5 and accD.

  • Definition och mätning av tvåspråkighet : en litteraturgranskning
  • 1974
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this report is to describe some different definitions of the concept bilingualism used in earlier research. Thereby special attention has been paid to if and how the concept degree was considered and established and how the bilingual persons were sampled and classified. This purpose has been put forward as implications for research in the Northern Sweden (Tornedalen) may possibly be gained. In the literature studied bilingualism has been defined differently with regard to the objects of each examination. Generalizations to other domains has, however, in some examinations been made although put up definitions have not been considered. The results show that classifying and sampling of bilingual subjects are often closely connected. In a few examinations degree of bilingualism is considered. Methods used in earlier research are sampling and classifying which in this report are headed 1) external criteria 2) estimation 3) observation 4) questionnaires 5) interviews 6) tests 7) other methods.Where the above methods are to be applied for research in the Northern Sweden following conditions must be considered: Finnish is in Tornedalen almost exclusively an oral language, the attitudes to the languages vary, affects of estimation may probably have an influence on the results, and finally that the use of speed-tests is debatable.

  • Identifying morphological indicators of aging with neural networks on large-scale whole-body MRI
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging. - 0278-0062 .- 1558-254X. ; 39:5, s. 1430-1437
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A wealth of information is contained in images obtained by whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Studying the link between the imaged anatomy and properties known from outside sources has the potential to give new insights into the underlying factors that manifest themselves in individual human morphology. In this work we investigate the expression of age-related changes in the whole-body image. A large dataset of about 32,000 subjects scanned from neck to knee and aged 44–82 years from the UK Biobank study was used for a machine-based analysis. We trained a convolutional neural network based on the VGG16 architecture to predict the age of a given subject based on image data from these scans. In 10-fold cross-validation on 23,000 of these images the network reached a mean absolute error (MAE) of 2.49 years (R 2 = 0.83) and showed consistent performance on a separate test set of another 8,000 images. On a second test set of 100 images the network outperformed the averaged estimates given by three experienced radiologists, which reached an MAE of 5.58 years (R 2 = 0.08), by more than three years on average. In an attempt to explain these findings, we employ saliency analysis that opens up the image-based criteria used by the automated method to human interpretation. We aggregate the saliency into a single anatomical visualization which clearly highlights structures in the aortic arch and knee as primary indicators of age.

  • Returning Home after Decontamination? Applying the Protective Action Decision Model to a Nuclear Accident Scenario
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - : MDPI AG. - 1660-4601 .- 1661-7827. ; 19:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies of the aftermath of nuclear power plant accidents show that affected citizens assess higher risks and adopt more risk-avoidant behaviors than authorities expect. This results in differences between the planned recovery and actual outcomes. Based on this knowledge, this study examined the factors that affect citizens' preference to continue living in a decontaminated area. Testing the key aspects of the protective action decision model (PADM), this study analyzed Swedish survey data (N = 2291) regarding such an accident scenario. Several aspects of the PADM, from the layperson's view of threats and protective actions, to stakeholders and situational factors, were strongly supported. The most influential variables affecting settlement choices are perceptions of radiation risk, perceptions of decontamination effectiveness, government information, living with certain restrictions, and attachment to an area because of one's work. A novel contribution of this study is that it ranked the significance of such effects on behavioral intentions in an emergency scenario. Regarding the policy recommendations, this study concluded that a recovery program must facilitate most aspects of people's lives and provide trustworthy information on decontamination efficiency. As some people will avoid potential health risks and leave a decontaminated area, planning to implement one solution for everyone would likely not be optimal.
