    • The Lodge as a Public Sphere. Epideictic Aspects on Masonic RhetoricsThe question about the change of doxa is central in the postdoctoral project ”The Temple of Immortality. Moral, Mysticism and Masculinity in the Swedish Order of Freemasons 1735-1796”. The article demonstrates a ceremonial oration within the fraternity and analyzes the rhetorical strategy. It shows how the adjustment of form to content challenges the genre boundaries. The main question is how the orator deals with the strain between the presence of royalties – the political power – and the fraternal context. The idea of a life after death played a central role when Swedish Freemasonry took shape. There are two aspects of immortality. First, it was a result of Christian beliefs incorporated and stressed in “The Swedish Rite” around the middle of the eighteenth century. In the chapter degrees, the Freemasons saw themselves as Knights Templars, true defenders of the Christian faith. In this case life beyond death represented heavenly resurrection. But, life beyond death was also a matter of collective memory in the Masonic communities; lodge members were encouraged to commemorate deceased brethren. More specifically, commemoration was actualized in those separate ceremonies held to grieve over and honour the deceased. Every lodge arranged such a Commemoration Day, using obelisks, arms, mourning crape, funeral music, candle symbolism and melodramatic speeches to create a mood of sorrow. This article focuses one such day, especially the speech over the deceased – an “eloge” (French: éloge, panegyrical speech, praise) in the genre of genus demonstrativum. It is shown that the rhetor, baron Gustaf Adolf Reuterholm, uses biographical material to commemorate – Gustav III of Sweden, a cluster of deceased brothers – as well as honour the new king, all with the purpose to demonstrate them as positive examples of ethical behaviour. The rhetorical challenge for Reuterholm is to handle with all three panegyrical objects instead of one according to the conventions of the genre.

  • In Memory of Virtue : The Swedish Masonic Eloge of the Eighteenth-Century
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal for Research into Freemasonry and Fraternalism. - Sheffield : Equinox Publishing. - 1757-2460 .- 1757-2479. ; :2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents an examination of formal and principal ideas of printed masonic orations of praise, so-called ‘eloges’ (eulogies, also called ‘laudatio’ or ‘encomium’). It contextualizes the tradition of memorial lodges in Swedish freemasonry during the eighteenth century and argues for that ceremonial orations of the memorial lodges can be interpreted as a kind of secularized form of the aristocratic funeral oration, as well as a rhetorical subgenre to the panegyric eloges held in French and Swedish academies. It is also demonstrated how the idea of personal resurrection challenged deistic views and how light symbolism expressed this figure of thought. At last, it is argued that the functions of the bourgeois memorial ceremonies in the lodges were to socialize the brethren into and to unite them around key concepts of honour and virtue, as well as to royalist politics stressing loyal patriotism.

  • Konsten att upphöja det ringa : om Torgny Lindgrens litterära metod
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The thesis examines how Torgny Lindgren carries out in literary praxis a particular vision of what serious art should be. This praxis is referred to as his "literary method". The study focuses on ten of his short stories, nine from the collection Merabs skönhet (1983, "Merab's Beauty") and one from I Brokiga Blads vatten (1999, "In Brokiga Blad's Water"). The reason for the choice is that these stories together could be interpreted as a programmatic presentation of the method; accordingly the stories are informed by a meta-aesthetical perspective. The vision is that serious art must suggest how people can find a spiritual dimension in their life in the flesh. In Lindgren's method this will make the miracle of Incarnation the all-pervading underlying image which displays a constant tension between the lowly carnal and the sublime spiritual aspects of human life. The method pictures this tension by a constant use of the rhetorical trope of catachresis, the compound of two incompatible images which normally produces a comical and sometimes absurd effect. But the method also suggests the possibility of reconciliation between the contrasts by elevating the lowly and insignificant up to the dimension of the spiritual. The means of achieving this are the representations of human life by way of the Word and Art, two recurring themes of the texts studied. The examination of Lindgren's method is achieved mainly by concrete text analyses. Each story is studied with regard to how the catachrestic mode realizes the given themes and the concluding message by way of surprising perspectives, by play with double meanings of words and through grotesque motifs, but also by linguistic means like the colouring of the discourse by dialectical forms and biblical quotations. Although constantly making use of humorous effects the method does not result in comical literature. The serious message seems to be that an existence without a relation to the spiritual dimension is empty and that the sense of a meaningful life is given by a particular attitude to it that could be described as "piety".
