• Designing auditory displays to facilitate object localization in virtual haptic 3D environments
• 2006
• Ingår i: Proceedings of the 8th international ACM SIGACCESS conference on Computers and accessibility. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 1595932909 ; , s. 255-256
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• Five different auditory displays were designed to aid blind users in finding objects in a virtual haptic 3d environment. Each auditory display was based on a different principle and incorporated different methods for representing spatial information. Results from an evaluation with seven visually impaired persons reveal to what extent these methods facilitate object localization in a virtual haptic 3d environment.

• Boldness predicts social status in zebrafish (Danio rerio)
• 2011
• Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 6:8
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• This study explored if boldness could be used to predict social status. First, boldness was assessed by monitoring individual zebrafish behaviour in (1) an unfamiliar barren environment with no shelter (open field), (2) the same environment when a roof was introduced as a shelter, and (3) when the roof was removed and an unfamiliar object (Lego® brick) was introduced. Next, after a resting period of minimum one week, social status of the fish was determined in a dyadic contest and dominant/subordinate individuals were determined as the winner/loser of two consecutive contests. Multivariate data analyses showed that males were bolder than females and that the behaviours expressed by the fish during the boldness tests could be used to predict which fish would later become dominant and subordinate in the ensuing dyadic contest. We conclude that bold behaviour is positively correlated to dominance in zebrafish and that boldness is not solely a consequence of social dominance.

• Increasing energy absorption and reliability of beams by improved architecture and web-flange junctions
• 2019
• Ingår i: Advanced Materials for Defense. - Baech : Trans Tech Publications Ltd. - 9783035713664 - 9783035733662 ; , s. 114-119
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• Lightweight and strong composite material beams are increasingly sought to quickly, easily, and cost-effectively transport and setup a variety of constructions such as bridges, cabins/stores/shelters, vehicles etc. For structural beams produced as conventional laminated composite materials, their weak areas tend to occur at intersections such as web-flange junctions due to absence of fibres bridging the interconnections. This drawback can however be overcome with development of profiled 3D textile reinforcements having combination architectures and constituent web-flange parts inherently mutually interconnected through fibre interlacement. In addition to general strength improvement, beams containing such novel reinforcement architectures also show increased energy absorption capability due to the mutual web-flange integration at the junctions. An 'I' and a 'flanged-triangle' cross-section beams were produced by a novel non-conventional weaving method, using carbon fibres as reinforcement, and their energy absorption capabilities were tested. These beams respectively absorbed over 50% and 300% more energy per weight in bending, compared to metal counterparts. This paper presents some relevant aspects of these innovative beams.

• Navigation and control in haptic applications shared by blind and sighted users
• 2006
• Ingår i: Haptic And Audio Interaction Design, Proceedings. - Glasgow : Springer. - 3540375953 ; , s. 68-80
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• Haptic feedback in shared virtual environments can potentially make it easier for a visit ally impaired person to take part in and contribute to the process of group work. In this paper a task driven explorative evaluation is presented. of collaboration between visually impaired and sighted persons in three applications that provide haptic and visual feedback. The results show that all pairs could perform all the tasks in these applications even though a number of difficulties were identified. The conclusions made can inform design of applications for cooperation between visually impaired and sighted users.

• Optimizing zebrafish rearing-Effects of fish density and environmental enrichment
• 2023
• Ingår i: Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1662-5153. ; 17
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Introduction; Despite its popularity in research, there is very little scientifically validated knowledge about the best practices on zebrafish (Danio rerio) husbandry, which has led to several facilities having their own husbandry protocols. This study was performed to expand knowledge on the effects of enrichment and fish density on the welfare of zebrafish, with hopes of providing a scientific basis for future recommendations and legislations. Methods: Zebrafish were reared at three different stocking densities, (1, 3 or 6 fish/L), in tanks with or without environmental enrichment. Agonistic behavior was observed twice a week for 9 weeks directly in the housing tanks. Aspects of welfare is known to be reflected in neuroendocrine stress responses. Thus, cortisol secretion in response to lowering the water level was analyzed for each group. In addition, we assessed cortisol secretion in response to confinement and risk-taking behavior (boldness) using the novel tank diving test for individual fish. At termination of the experiment fish were subjected to stress by transfer to a novel environment and brain tissue was sampled for analysis of brain monoaminergic activity. Results: Fish kept at the lowest density (1 fish/L) showed a significantly higher level of aggression than fish kept at 3 or 6 fish/L. Moreover, fish kept at this low density showed significantly higher cortisol secretion on a group level than fish kept at the higher stocking densities, when subjected to lowering of the water level. Keeping fish at 1 fish/L also had effects on brain monoamines, these fish showing higher brain dopamine concentrations but lower dopamine turnover than fish kept at higher densities. Neither stocking density or enrichment had any clear effects on the behavior of individual fish in the novel tank diving test. However, fish kept at high densities showed lower and more variable growth rates than fish kept at 1 fish/L.Discussion: Taken together these results suggest that zebrafish should not be kept at a density of 1 fish/L. The optimal stocking density is likely to be in the range of 3-6 fish/L.

• User Oriented Cooperative Interaction Design : A multidisciplinary project course
• 2006
• Ingår i: Proceedings of HCI Educators Workshop - Inventivity: Teaching Theory, Dsign and Innovation in HCI. - : University of Limerick. ; , s. 81-84
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• In this paper we give a “case story” experience from development, practice and results from a method and project course on User Oriented Interaction Design. The course is intended for last year Masters’ students from different backgrounds, computer science as well as social science and design disciplines. The course was inspired by student and teacher participation in the Apple Interface Design Project 1993, 1994 and 1995, when it was established as a regular course at three higher educational institutions in Stockholm within different faculties. From 2003 students and teachers from the course participate in the Siena Design Project. Experience from teaching and practicing methods from HCI, e.g. Cooperative/Participatory design, industrial design, e.g. Functional Analysis, and ethnography, e.g. Contextual Inquiry, is described. Experience and results from project work with user involvement and conceptual prototypes is exemplified and discussed, especially from the perspective of multidisciplinary cooperation. Finally project evaluation criteria and lessons learnt are presented.
