  • Lyman continuum escape fraction of faint galaxies at z similar to 3.3 in the CANDELS/GOODS-North, EGS, and COSMOS fields with LBC
  • 2017

    • Context. The reionization of the Universe is one of the most important topics of present-day astrophysical research. The most plausible candidates for the reionization process are star-forming galaxies, which according to the predictions of the majority of the theoretical and semi-analytical models should dominate the H I ionizing background at z greater than or similar to 3. Aims. We measure the Lyman continuum escape fraction, which is one of the key parameters used to compute the contribution of star-forming galaxies to the UV background. It provides the ratio between the photons produced at lambda <= 912 angstrom rest-frame and those that are able to reach the inter-galactic medium, i.e. that are not absorbed by the neutral hydrogen or by the dust of the galaxy's inter-stellar medium. Methods. We used ultra-deep U-band imaging (U = 30.2 mag at 1 sigma) from Large Binocular Camera at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBC/LBT) in the CANDELS/GOODS-North field and deep imaging in the COSMOS and EGS fields in order to estimate the Lyman continuum escape fraction of 69 star-forming galaxies with secure spectroscopic redshifts at 3.27 <= z <= 3.40 to faint magnitude limits (L = 0.2L*, or equivalently M-1500 similar to -19). The narrow redshift range implies that the LBC U-band filter exclusively samples the lambda <= 912 angstrom rest-frame wavelengths. Results. We measured through stacks a stringent upper limit (<1.7% at 1 sigma) for the relative escape fraction of H I ionizing photons from bright galaxies (L > L*), while for the faint population (L = 0.2L*) the limit to the escape fraction is less than or similar to 10%. We computed the contribution of star-forming galaxies to the observed UV background at z similar to 3 and find that it is not sufficient to keep the Universe ionized at these redshifts unless their escape fraction increases significantly (>= 10%) at low luminosities (M-1500 >= -19). Conclusions. We compare our results on the Lyman continuum escape fraction of high-z galaxies with recent estimates in the literature, and discuss future prospects to shed light on the end of the Dark Ages. In the future, strong gravitational lensing will be fundamental in order to measure the Lyman continuum escape fraction down to faint magnitudes (M-1500 similar to -16) that are inaccessible with the present instrumentation on blank fields. These results will be important in order to quantify the role of faint galaxies to the reionization budget.

  • JWST's PEARLS : A new lens model for ACT-CL J0102-4915, "El Gordo," and the first red supergiant star at cosmological distances discovered by JWST
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 672
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) data on the massive colliding cluster El Gordo allow for 23 known families of multiply lensed images to be confirmed and for eight new members of these families to be identified. Based on these families, which have been confirmed spectroscopically by MUSE, we derived an initial lens model. This model guided the identification of 37 additional families of multiply lensed galaxies, among which 28 are entirely new systems, and nine were previously known. The initial lens model determined geometric redshifts for the 37 new systems. The geometric redshifts agree reasonably well with spectroscopic or photometric redshifts when those are available. The geometric redshifts enable two additional models that include all 60 families of multiply lensed galaxies spanning a redshift range 2 z z > 0.8 and has an estimated virial mass close the maximum mass allowed by standard cosmological models. The JWST images also reveal the presence of small-mass perturbers that produce small lensing distortions. The smallest of these is consistent with being a dwarf galaxy at z = 0.87 and has an estimated mass of 3.8 x 10(9) M-circle dot, making it the smallest substructure found at z > 0.5. The JWST images also show several candidate caustic-crossing events. One of them is detected at high significance at the expected position of the critical curve and is likely a red supergiant star at z = 2.1878. This would be the first red supergiant found at cosmological distances. The cluster lensing should magnify background objects at z > 6, making more of them visible than in blank fields of a similar size, but there appears to be a deficiency of such objects.

  • JWST PEARLS. Prime extragalactic areas for reionization and lensing science : project overview and first results
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astronomical Journal. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0004-6256 .- 1538-3881. ; 165:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We give an overview and describe the rationale, methods, and first results from NIRCam images of the JWST “Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science” (PEARLS) project. PEARLS uses up to eight NIRCam filters to survey several prime extragalactic survey areas: two fields at the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP); seven gravitationally lensing clusters; two high redshift protoclusters; and the iconic backlit VV 191 galaxy system to map its dust attenuation. PEARLS also includes NIRISS spectra for one of the NEP fields and NIRSpec spectra of two high-redshift quasars. The main goal of PEARLS is to study the epoch of galaxy assembly, active galactic nucleus (AGN) growth, and First Light. Five fields—the JWST NEP Time-Domain Field (TDF), IRAC Dark Field, and three lensing clusters—will be observed in up to four epochs over a year. The cadence and sensitivity of the imaging data are ideally suited to find faint variable objects such as weak AGN, high-redshift supernovae, and cluster caustic transits. Both NEP fields have sightlines through our Galaxy, providing significant numbers of very faint brown dwarfs whose proper motions can be studied. Observations from the first spoke in the NEP TDF are public. This paper presents our first PEARLS observations, their NIRCam data reduction and analysis, our first object catalogs, the 0.9–4.5 μm galaxy counts and Integrated Galaxy Light. We assess the JWST sky brightness in 13 NIRCam filters, yielding our first constraints to diffuse light at 0.9–4.5 μm. PEARLS is designed to be of lasting benefit to the community.

  • FIRST RESULTS FROM THE FAINT INFRARED GRISM SURVEY (FIGS) : FIRST SIMULTANEOUS DETECTION OF Ly alpha EMISSION AND LYMAN BREAK FROM A GALAXY AT z=7.51
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 827:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Galaxies at high redshifts are a valuable tool for studying cosmic dawn, therefore it is crucial to reliably identify these galaxies. Here, we present an unambiguous and first simultaneous detection of both the Ly alpha emission and the Lyman break from a z = 7.512 +/- 0.004 galaxy, observed in the Faint Infrared Grism Survey (FIGS). These spectra, taken with the G102 grism on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), show a significant emission line detection (6 sigma) in two observational position angles (PAs), with Lya line flux of 1.06 +/- 0.19 x 10(-17) erg s(-1) cm(-2). The line flux is nearly a factor of four higher than that in the archival MOSFIRE spectroscopic observations. This is consistent with other recent observations, implying that ground-based near-infrared spectroscopy underestimates the total emission line fluxes, and if confirmed, can have strong implications for reionization studies that are based on ground-based Ly alpha measurements. A 4 sigma detection of the NV line in one PA also suggests a weak active galactic nucleus (AGN), and if confirmed, would make this source the highest-redshift AGN yet found. These observations from HST thus clearly demonstrate the sensitivity of the FIGS survey, and the capability of grism spectroscopy for studying the epoch of reionization.

  • JWST Reveals a Possible z similar to 11 Galaxy Merger in Triply Lensed MACS0647-JD
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : American Astronomical Society. - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 949:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • MACS0647-JD is a triply lensed z similar to 11 galaxy originally discovered with the Hubble Space Telescope. The three lensed images are magnified by factors of similar to 8, 5, and 2 to AB mag 25.1, 25.6, and 26.6 at 3.5 mu m. The brightest is over a magnitude brighter than other galaxies recently discovered at similar redshifts z > 10 with JWST. Here, we report new JWST imaging that clearly resolves MACS0647-JD as having two components that are either merging galaxies or stellar complexes within a single galaxy. The brighter larger component "A" is intrinsically very blue (ss similar to-2.6 +/- 0.1), likely due to very recent star formation and no dust, and is spatially extended with an effective radius similar to 70 +/- 24 pc. The smaller component "B" (r similar to 20-+ 58 pc) appears redder (ss similar to-2 +/- 0.2), likely because it is older (100-200 Myr) with mild dust extinction (AV similar to 0.1 mag). With an estimated stellar mass ratio of roughly 2:1 and physical projected separation similar to 400 pc, we may be witnessing a galaxy merger 430 million years after the Big Bang. We identify galaxies with similar colors in a high-redshift simulation, finding their star formation histories to be dissimilar, which is also suggested by the spectral energy distribution fitting, suggesting they formed further apart. We also identify a candidate companion galaxy "C" similar to 3 kpc away, likely destined to merge with A and B. Upcoming JWST Near Infrared Spectrograph observations planned for 2023 January will deliver spectroscopic redshifts and more physical properties for these tiny magnified distant galaxies observed in the early universe.

  • The Dopamine Stabilizer (-)-OSU6162 Occupies a Subpopulation of Striatal Dopamine D2/D3 Receptors: An C-11 Raclopride PET Study in Healthy Human Subjects
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Neuropsychopharmacology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0893-133X .- 1740-634X. ; 40:2, s. 472-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • (-)-OSU6162 is a dopamine stabilizer that can counteract both hyperdopaminergic and hypodopaminergic states. In this study, D2/D3 receptor occupancy of (-)-OSU6162 in the human brain was investigated using positron emission tomography (PET). Twelve male healthy volunteers underwent [C-11] raclopride PET scanning before and 1 h after a single oral dose of (-)-OSU6162 (15-90 mg). Blood samples for determination of (-)-OSU6162 and prolactin plasma levels were collected at T-max. Parametric images of [ 11 C] raclopride binding potential relative to nondisplaceable tissue (cerebellar grey matter) uptake (BPND) at baseline and after (-)-OSU6162 administration were generated using the simplified reference tissue model. MRI-based regions of interest were defined for the striatum, composed of caudate nucleus and putamen, and projected onto the co-registered parametric [C-11] raclopride BPND image. Furthermore, three striatal subregions, ie, anterior dorsal caudate, anterior dorsal putamen, and ventral striatum, were defined manually and additionally analyzed. Plasma concentrations of (-)-OSU6162, ranging from 0.01 to 0.9 mu M, showed a linear relationship with prolactin levels, reflecting blockade of pituitary D2 receptors. A concentration-dependent increase in striatal D2/D3 receptor occupancy was observed, reaching a value of about 20% at an (-)-OSU6162 plasma level of 0.2 mu M, and which for higher concentrations leveled off to a maximal occupancy of about 40%. Findings were similar in the striatal subregions. The present data corroborate the notion that (-)-OSU6162 binds preferentially to a subpopulation of D2/D3 receptors, possibly predominantly extrasynaptic, and this may form the basis for the dopamine-stabilizing properties of (-)-OSU6162.

  • Tau PET and relative cerebral blood flow in dementia with Lewy bodies : A PET study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: NeuroImage: Clinical. - : Elsevier BV. - 2213-1582. ; 28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Alpha-synuclein often co-occurs with Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology in Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB). From a dynamic [18F]flortaucipir PET scan we derived measures of both tau binding and relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF). We tested whether regional tau binding or rCBF differed between DLB patients and AD patients and controls and examined their association with clinical characteristics of DLB. Methods: Eighteen patients with probable DLB, 65 AD patients and 50 controls underwent a dynamic 130-minute [18F]flortaucipir PET scan. DLB patients with positive biomarkers for AD based on cerebrospinal fluid or amyloid PET were considered as DLB with AD pathology (DLB-AD+). Receptor parametric mapping (cerebellar gray matter reference region) was used to extract regional binding potential (BPND) and R1, reflecting (AD-specific) tau pathology and rCBF, respectively. First, we performed regional comparisons of [18F]flortaucipir BPND and R1 between diagnostic groups. In DLB patients only, we performed regression analyses between regional [18F]flortaucipir BPND, R1 and performance on ten neuropsychological tests. Results: Regional [18F]flortaucipir BPND in DLB was comparable with tau binding in controls (p > 0.05). Subtle higher tau binding was observed in DLB-AD+ compared to DLB-AD- in the medial temporal and parietal lobe (both p < 0.05). Occipital and lateral parietal R1 was lower in DLB compared to AD and controls (all p < 0.01). Lower frontal R1 was associated with impaired performance on digit span forward (standardized beta, stβ = 0.72) and category fluency (stβ = 0.69) tests. Lower parietal R1 was related to lower delayed (stβ = 0.50) and immediate (stβ = 0.48) recall, VOSP number location (stβ = 0.70) and fragmented letters (stβ = 0.59) scores. Lower occipital R1 was associated to worse performance on VOSP fragmented letters (stβ = 0.61), all p < 0.05. Conclusion: The amount of tau binding in DLB was minimal and did not differ from controls. However, there were DLB-specific occipital and lateral parietal relative cerebral blood flow reductions compared to both controls and AD patients. Regional rCBF, but not tau binding, was related to cognitive impairment. This indicates that assessment of rCBF may give more insight into disease mechanisms in DLB than tau PET.
