- While soundscape is increasingly acknowledged within landscape planning and design discourse, there is little research that clarifies how soundscapes are actually dealt with in landscape architecture practice - partly owing to methodological insufficiencies. This paper, therefore, describes a model for evaluating soundscape treatment in landscape design proposals, focusing on three key aspects. With the dual aim of testing the model, and learning more about how soundscape is approached in practice, the paper spotlights a major design competition for a new cemetery in Sweden. The model proved fruitful and easy to apply. It showed that only limited attention was paid to soundscape in the competition as a whole, and was a useful means of pinpointing proposals where soundscape was fully considered as a design feature; one competition entry that did so is described in the paper. Discussions cover design practice, trends in the competition and model application.

- This paper reports experiences from three workshops dealing with soundscape as a noise treatment approach in landscape architecture. The workshops were conducted between 2012 and 2016 in different contexts, for different purposes and with different participants. The paper describes the workshop approach employed and analyzes the proposals made by workshop participants to employ “soundscape action” as an operational tool in landscape architecture projects. Through a process of ‘keywording’ and clustering proposals from the workshops, 22 pragmatic soundscape actions emerged and are described on a general level. The paper then discusses the outcomes and experiences from the workshops and relates this to landscape architecture practice.

Workshop om ljud vid Skogskyrkogården 2-3 november 2015 : rapport för projektet Stadens Hållbara Ljudrum

- På senare år har intresset för ljudplanering ökat och blivit mer helhetsinriktat (jmfr. Brown 2012). Där man tidigare planerat med utgångspunkt i buller och/eller ljudnivåer, betonas nu allt oftare själva upplevelsen av ljud. Potentiella kvaliteter hos ljud lyfts fram, samtidigt som hänsyn till buller finns kvar som en central del. Man brukar tala om ljudlandskap (Schafer 1994 [1977]; ISO 2014). Ljudlandskapsrörelsen rymmer mycket potential, men eftersom den är relativt ny finns en hel del frågetecken som behöver redas ut och forskning som behöver genomföras. Detta utgjorde bakgrunden till den workshop som genomfördes den 2-3 november på Skogskyrkogården. Workshopen ingick som en förstudie i det Vinnovafinansierade forskningsprojektet "Stadens hållbara ljudrum", med SLU Alnarp som koordinerande part. I forskningsprojektet undersöks hur frågor kring ljudlandskapet kan integreras i planering och gestaltning. Projektet fokuserar initialt på begravningsplatser, där en konflikt mellan platsens krav på rofylldhet och omgivningens ljudnivåer är vanlig. En viktig del i projektet är att utveckla lösningar och verktyg för ljudplanering. Världsarvet Skogskyrkogården är en berömd anläggning som rymmer många arkitektoniska kvaliteter, samtidigt som ljudmiljön är problematisk med buller från Nynäsvägen och Tyresövägen. Stockholm stad och kyrkogårdsförvaltningen utreder för tillfället möjligheterna att minska effekten av bullret på olika sätt. Workshopens upplägg i korthet.De två dagarna på Skogskyrkogården utgjorde en förstudie tänkt som utgångspunkt för fortsatt arbete i projektets fas två. I workshopen deltog människor som på ett eller annat sätt har kunskap om antingen ljudmiljöfrågor och/eller kyrkogårdsmiljöer.Dagarna delades upp i tre delmoment; WI, WII och WIII. WI handlade om att utveckla förståelsen avden befintliga situationen, samt utveckla språket och kommunikationen om ljud genom att begreppsliggöra dem. I WII togs förslag på förbättringar av ljudmiljön fram och i WIII testades en lösning i praktiken.Workshoparbetet visade på komplexiteten att arbeta med ljudfrågor, vilket kanske särskilt framkom i den sista, konkretiserande delen; arbetet med högtalare. I denna del bekräftades de svårigheter, detaljer och små avvägningar som lyckad ljudmaskering är förknippat med.En viktig aspekt som var återkommande under dagarna som helhet var betydelsen av ljudets samspel med andra (särskilt visuella) aspekter. Detta blev kanske särskilt påtagligt på en sådan plats som Skogskyrkogården, där det finns starka visuella kvaliteter att ta hänsyn till. Behovet av att ta fram verktyg som kan verka understödjande för att arbeta med ljudfrågor var en annan aspekt som lyftes fram under dagarna. Här finns en stor utmaning, då verktygen bör vara enkla och överskådliga, samtidigt som de komplexiteter som arbete med ljud kräver måste inkorporeras på lämpligt sätt.

- The greater cities’ outer transitional zones are ephemeral and dynamic. With Malmö (Sweden) as an example this paper discusses how coastal and agricultural landscapes in the urban fringe can develop into something new and closer to actual needs of the inhabitants. This is done by opening up for a use of new concepts when describing these areas, for example among planners/designers and exploiters. The approach is interdisciplinary, involving cultural geography and landscape architecture, and aims at weaving history, the present and the future together to open up for a more dynamic and inter-related understanding and practice for cultural heritage, planning and urban design.

- This report presents the parks and green walls we visited on our study visit in Paris (15th-19th of August 2022). We aimed to study green spaces, which represent a good or exceptional practice of ecological design. Ecological design, in an urban landscape context, can be described as the integration of aesthetic and ecological aspects in urban green space design. Supporting ecological processes, biodiversity and providing high aesthetical and recreational values are objectives of ecological design. The visited green spaces varied in their degree and focus on how aesthetical and ecological aspects were integrated. All objects were exceptional regarding one or several aspects such as the choice of plant material, structural and vegetation complexity or the degree in which ecological processes and biodiversity were given space. For us it was very interesting to see and discuss these varying approaches and how we perceived to which degree aesthetical and ecological goals were reached.

Disturbing the dead : climate change and the potential relocation of Swedish cemeteries

- This study focuses on the contradiction of mobility and immobility in relation to interred human remains. While society generally embraces human mobility, once individuals pass away and are disposed of, mobility ceases to be the norm. Some counties, like Sweden, has a rigid burial legislation that prohibits the re-location of interred human remains. However, both society- and climate-related events are increasingly affecting the eternal rest of the deceased. Utilizing quantitative data on all cemeteries in Sweden, this study aims to assess and analyse the potential magnitude of future large-scale moves of human remains due to expected impacts of climate change, and to put this into a relational context of norms and laws. Results show that climate change poses an apparent risk to cemeteries in Sweden, especially in the south-west of the country, and that this is mainly caused by increased risk of landslides and erosion, as a result of expected increased precipitation. A low estimate state that by the end of this century, some 30.000 interred remains and some 146.000 living survivors will likely be affected by climate-related risks.

- This study aims to broaden the scope of attention paid to multicultural societies in existing migration and mobilities literature, through expanding on the topic of spatial design, planning and management of contemporary cemeteries in light of increasing multiculturalism. The chapter explores how national judicial acts and practices facilitate or hinder inclusion of minorities’ needs and the existing local level measures in three Scandinavian towns to safeguard the needs of minorities in cemeteries and crematoria. The empirical data consists of analysis of legislative acts and qualitative interviews with 28 stakeholders in three medium/large-sized towns. As will be shown, Swedish and Norwegian burial acts share many similarities – for example, both acknowledge the need to meet particular burial and cremation needs for people not belonging to the Christian church. Differences mainly relate to how religion and belief communities are involved in the development of cemeteries. Through the interviews, we extract a nuanced picture of how individual towns work with ‘multiculturalism’ by elaborating on the following components that emerged from the analysis: presence of diversity, accommodation of various needs, cooperation with minorities, and reflections over special grave areas or cemetery sections for minorities. This study’s comparative outlook informs current debates on migration and mobilities and further sheds light on the specific inputs for forming policies and practices aiming at facilitating a multicultural approach when designing, planning and managing cemeteries and crematoria.
