- This thesis builds on three studies exploring demonstrations in show dance classes. Primarily, the thesis contributes to research on multimodality and mobile learning activities. Secondly, the thesis adds to the development of multimodal transcription by proposing alternative ways of transcribing multimodal actions within these kinds of activities. The main research questions are: 1) How does the teacher enable learning during the demonstrations in the show dance classes? 2) How do the teacher and the dancers interact during the demonstrations?The theoretical and methodological framework of the thesis is ethnomethodological conversation analysis, EMCA, which is also called multimodal interaction analysis (e.g. Mondada 2018; Broth and Keevallik 2020). Data were collected at a dance studio in Sweden and consist of video recordings filmed with three cameras and data from ethnographic fieldwork. The particular dance practice investigated in this thesis is called show dance. The show dance group that is the focus of this thesis is a group of 20 dancers between the ages of 16 and 24 who have been practicing together for several years.The three studies deal with different aspects of demonstrations in show dance classes. Study I focuses on the use of the mirror as a pedagogical resource for the teacher to use when demonstrating. The study investigates what its interactional role is, as well as the dancers’ response to the demonstrations. Study II addresses the teachers' use of imagery during demonstrations as a teaching strategy. The examined types of imagery are verbal, bodily and sound imagery, and the study shows how these multimodal resources create prerequisites for learning. In Study III, the joint creation of a dance sequence is in focus, i.e. how the teacher together with the dancers develop and make adjustments in a part of a choreography. The studies contribute to furthering our understanding of how a demonstration is a multimodal practice. Together, the multimodal actions create a demonstration by recruiting different resources. In this sense the resources form complex multimodal gestalts (Mondada 2014), where none of the resources can be considered superior to any other resource. Taken together, the three studies show that the demonstrations that the teacher conducts create opportunities for learning. Embodied resources, verbal utterances and artifacts are used by the teacher and understood by the participants as resources for learning.

- Snart sagt alla situationer en människa befinner sig i präglas av interaktion. Människor pratar med varandra, rör sig genom ett rum, utbyter blickar, lär sig saker, arbetar, skämtar, håller i föremål ... Utmärkande för oss människor är nämligen att vi får saker och ting gjorda med vårt språk och våra kroppsliga resurser. Genom sådana handlingar påverkar vi vår omvärld och våra medmänniskor - och vi gör det tillsammans med dem. Det är studiet av denna mänskliga interaktion som boken handlar om. I första delen introduceras forskningsfältet interaktionsanalys och de arbetssätt, redskap och etiska ställningstaganden som hör till fältet. Den andra delen innehåller forskningsstudier som visar på bredden inom fältet och som pedagogiskt leder läsaren genom hela analysarbetet. Till boken hör även ett videomaterial som illustrerar några av bokens exempel, och som är tillgängligt för läsarens egna studier. Att analysera interaktion är avsedd för utbildningar inom språk vetenskap och angränsande ämnen som sociologi, utbildningsvetenskap och kommunikation.

Effects of logging residue removal on ground-active beetles in temperate forests

- Logging residue ("slash") left on clear-cuttings may affect the microhabitat complexity, and thereby indirectly the beetle (Coleoptera) populations. In three regions (West, North and East) of south and central Sweden, we studied short-term effects of slash removal on species richness and abundance of beetles, collected by pitfall trapping in 16 clear-cuttings (<1 year old) in coniferous and mixed forests. The sites were managed in two alternative ways, either slash was removed (SR), or slash was left (SL). Overall, the number of morphospecies per trap was significantly higher on SL sites than on SR sites. Species richness differed significantly between the regions, the Western region being the poorest in number of species per trap. Rarefaction plots of species richness in four sites suggested that accumulation rate of species differed between two SR sites but rates were similar for two SL sites. Microhabitat structure was measured by aboveground height of slash heaps. Slash height was positively correlated with the number of sticks in slash heap and fractal dimension, respectively. There was a positive relationship between the number of individuals per trap and slash height in SR sites in the Western and Eastern regions, but not in the Northern one. We concluded that extensive slash removal leads to impoverish species richness of Coleoptera. at a local scale. Slash heaps left on site may provide important refuges for ground-active beetles. Moreover, our results supported the general theory that microhabitat structure affects arthropod abundance and diversity. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

- The aim of this thesis is to study what means are used in newspaper leaders (editorials) to influence public opinion. In order to obtain a wide range of such means, I have chosen material that has a clear timeframe and illustrates strong political antagonism, concerning the 1971 conflict between the Saco and SR unions and the Swedish state. Leaders from eight different newspapers with different party affiliations are analysed – six morning and two evening newspapers.What type of message leaders convey is examined mainly at the sentence level. Writers report what happened, assess the situation and analyse the causes and explanations for there being a labour conflict. They express criticism of those involved in various ways and exhort them to take recommended courses of action to resolve the conflict. Paragraphs can also be categorised in this way. How criticism is expressed is studied in detail because the material is rich in critical utterances of different types. Various theories about text types and speech act theory provide a theoretical background that is applied to the material. A number of different theories about what defines a genre are presented and tested on the leaders.The results of the investigation indicate that a large number of leaders from the morning newspapers are structured in a similar way, with the paragraph as the unit. They reveal a pattern, the normal pattern, where information is presented in a given order in the majority of morning leaders and the greatest number of message types is used. There is also a pattern of analysis/criticism, with critical and analytical paragraphs alternating and the analysis substantiating the criticism, as a rule.The few leaders in the morning newspapers that do not form a pattern may be strongly critical or almost solely analytical. One of the morning newspapers has many critical leaders that argue or incite. No analysis is made of evening newspaper leaders at the paragraph level since the paragraphs are short; instead, they are analysed as a whole, as are the argumentative leaders.The analysis shows that many leaders are structured in a similar way while at the same time there is considerable variation in the material, which is attributable to there being different types of editorials.

- In this article, we present an analysis of writing in the subject field of Swedish. We introduce how three teachers individually work with writing processes in their groups of thirteen or sixteen-year old students. The study is mainly based on classroom observations and video recordings. Our model of analysis has emerged from comparison of our data and consists of three points of departure: chains of text (reading and writing in the classroom), talk about text, and typologies of texts that are constructed in the classrooms. The results of the analysis show differences and similarities in various systematic ways, concerning the writing processes as well as the organisation of the classrooms. One of the teachers mainly focuses on the organisation of thought, another on the organisation of the world outside school, and the third on more general knowledge. The teachers’ didactic choices can be said to show the practical outcome of pedagogical theories based on process discourse, functional discourse and genre discourse. While the classrooms differ to a large extent, the teachers nonetheless abide by the national curricula for Swedish, but in their own way. The study is carried out as a part of the project “Text- and Knowledge Development in School”.

- Under hösten 2015 och våren 2016 anlände många människor på flykt till Sverige. Runt omkring i landet uppstod då ett behov av att informera dem som kommit om deras förutsättningar, inte minst när det gällde hälso- och sjukvård. Stockholms läns landstings (SLL) reaktion på denna kommunikationsutmaning var bland annat att producera broschyrer och affischer med information för asylsökande.I vårt samarbetsprojekt har vi utvärderat informationssatsningen, och vi har sökt materialets informationsvägar, från landstinget till potentiella vårdtagare, via organisationerna och vårdinstitutionerna. Forskningsfrågorna är:- Hur ges informationen, av vilka, till vilka och var?- Vilka möjligheter och hinder har siktats?Vår studie är språkvetenskaplig och fokuserar samspel, samtal och kontexter där aktörer använder och tolkar vårdinformation.Något som vi ser som ett viktigt resultat från vår studie är att vi kan bidra till att synliggöra ett övergripande dilemma i samhället. Det finns en stor beredskap och en stark vilja att hjälpa och välkomna personer som är nya i Stockholm och Sverige. Det finns också god kunskap om hur man kan göra det. Samtidigt är viljan att upprätthålla och befästa gällande regelverk och system stark. Vi har sett hur dessa riktningar ofta hamnar på kollisonskurs med varandra och hur det verkligen försvårar både för den som vill hjälpa och den som behöver hjälp. SLL, och andra myndigheter och verksamheter, befinner sig tillsammans med den enskilde mitt i detta problem. I utformningen av framtida informationssatsningar kan man ha som mål att minska dilemmats konsekvenser i så stor utsträckning som det är möjligt.
