  • The New York city off-hour delivery program: A business and community-friendly sustainability program
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Interfaces. - : Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). - 0092-2102 .- 1526-551X. ; 48:1, s. 70-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The New York City Off-Hour Delivery (NYC OHD) program is the work of a private-public-academic partnership - A collaborative effort of leading private-sector groups and companies, public-sector agencies led by the New York City Department of Transportation, and research partners led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The efforts of this partnership have induced more than 400 commercial establishments in NYC to accept OHD without supervision. The economic benefits are considerable: The carriers have reduced operational costs and parking fines by 45 percent; the receivers enjoy more reliable deliveries, enabling them to reduce inventory levels; the truck drivers have less stress, shorter work hours, and easier deliveries and parking; the delivery trucks produce 55-67 percent less emissions than they would during regular-hour deliveries, for a net reduction of 2.5 million tons of CO2 per year; and citizens' quality of life increases as a result of reduced conflicts between delivery trucks, cars, bicycles, and pedestrians, and through the use of low-noise delivery practices and technologies that minimize the impacts of noise. The total economic benefits exceed $20 million per year. The success of the OHD program is due largely to the policy design at its core, made possible with the behavioral microsimulation. This unique optimization-simulation system incorporates the research conducted into an operations research/management science tool that assesses the effectiveness of alternative policy designs. This enabled the successful implementation of the project within the most complex urban environment in the United States.

  • ZnTe nanowires grown on GaAs(100) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 89:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ZnTe nanowires with an average diameter of about 30 nm and lengths above 1 mu m were grown on GaAs(100) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. The growth process was based on the Au-catalyzed vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. A thin gold layer (3-20 angstrom thick) annealed in high vacuum prior to the nanowire growth was used as a source of catalytic nanoparticles. The nanowires are inclined about 55 degrees to the (100) substrate surface normal. They have a zinc-blende crystal structure and their growth axis is < 111 >.

  • The European Hematology Association Roadmap for European Hematology Research : a consensus document
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Haematologica. - Pavia, Italy : Ferrata Storti Foundation (Haematologica). - 0390-6078 .- 1592-8721. ; 101:2, s. 115-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Hematology Association (EHA) Roadmap for European Hematology Research highlights major achievements in diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders and identifies the greatest unmet clinical and scientific needs in those areas to enable better funded, more focused European hematology research. Initiated by the EHA, around 300 experts contributed to the consensus document, which will help European policy makers, research funders, research organizations, researchers, and patient groups make better informed decisions on hematology research. It also aims to raise public awareness of the burden of blood disorders on European society, which purely in economic terms is estimated at (sic)23 billion per year, a level of cost that is not matched in current European hematology research funding. In recent decades, hematology research has improved our fundamental understanding of the biology of blood disorders, and has improved diagnostics and treatments, sometimes in revolutionary ways. This progress highlights the potential of focused basic research programs such as this EHA Roadmap. The EHA Roadmap identifies nine 'sections' in hematology: normal hematopoiesis, malignant lymphoid and myeloid diseases, anemias and related diseases, platelet disorders, blood coagulation and hemostatic disorders, transfusion medicine, infections in hematology, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. These sections span 60 smaller groups of diseases or disorders. The EHA Roadmap identifies priorities and needs across the field of hematology, including those to develop targeted therapies based on genomic profiling and chemical biology, to eradicate minimal residual malignant disease, and to develop cellular immunotherapies, combination treatments, gene therapies, hematopoietic stem cell treatments, and treatments that are better tolerated by elderly patients.

  • Microwave-induced delocalization of excitons in ternary compounds of II-VI and III-V semiconductors
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica. A. - 0587-4246 .- 1898-794X. ; 103:6, s. 559-566
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work we employ technique of optically detected cyclotron resonance for evaluation of the role of localization processes in CdTe/CdMnTe and CdMnTe/CdMgTe quantum well structures. From microwave-induced changes of excitonic emissions we evaluate magnitude of potential fluctuations (Stokes shift), correlate optically detected cyclotron resonance results with the results of time-resolved experiments and discuss nature of recombination processes in the limit of a strong localization.

  • Modeling the evolved gas species from cashew nut shells pyrolysis
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: A and WM, Annual International Conference on Incineration and Thermal Treatment Technologies, IT3. - 0923204849 - 9780923204846 ; , s. 260-278
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cashew nut shells are important biomass wastes abundant in most of the tropical countries. As biomass feedstock, they are important energy sources that can play an important role as fuel for energy generation through the ordinary thermochemical processes. However, although this potential as fuel, cashew nut shells are still rarely and weakly studied. In fact, studies on pyrolysis, gasification or combustion of cashew nut shells are not commonly found as it happens with wood related biomasses. On the other hand, it is known that pyrolysis plays a key role in any thermochemical conversion of biomass. In fact, biomass pyrolysis is a complex process that influences any of the three main thermochemical conversion processes of biomass into useful energy. This is due to the fact that pyrolysis characteristics do determine the char quality in which gasification and combustion are heavily dependent. Therefore, characterization of pyrolysis process is essential in thermochemical conversion processes. This makes the study of pyrolysis as mandatory in biomass fuels research. In this study, cashew nut shells are pyrolysed at three different low heating rates (10, 30 and 100°C/mn) using thermogravimetric analyser coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (TG-FTIR). Gas and tar evolution rates as well as yields and pyrolysis kinetics are obtained and compared with the data available in the literature for wood pellets and Miscanthus Giganteus under the same testing conditions. Further, these results are used as reference data for modeling pyrolysis at high heating rates as l,000and 10,000°C/s. The modeling aims at predicting yields and evolution rates of the pyrolysis products.

  • Hip arthroplasty for acute hip fracture in patients with neurological disorders: A report Of 9,702 cases from the Swedish arthroplasty register
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Injury. - : Elsevier BV. - 0020-1383. ; 53:3, s. 1202-1208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate neurological disorder as a risk factor for dislocation following arthroplasty for acute hip fractures. We also analysed medical and surgical adverse events (AE), readmission, reoperation, revision, and mortality as secondary outcomes. Methods: A longitudinal cohort study using prospectively collected and aggregated data from the Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register (SHAR) and the Swedish national patient register. All patients presenting with an acute hip fracture and treated with an arthroplasty in the period from 2005 to 2014 from the SHAR were identified. Patients in receipt of bilateral arthroplasties were excluded. Patients with a relevant pre-existing and diagnosed neurological disorder, as defined by ICD-10 codes, were identified (n = 9,702). All other cases (n = 29,411) were available for logistic regression propensity score matching. Patients were 1:1 matched on age, sex, Charlson comorbidity index, total versus hemiarthroplasty, head size, surgical approach, and year of surgery. Dislocations, adverse events, readmission, reoperation, revision, and mortality were studied using Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression. Results: The risk of dislocations was higher for patients with neurological disorder (HR=1.19, CI 1.03- 1.39, p<0.05). Neurological disorder was associated with increased risk of encountering an adverse event (p<0.001 at 90-days); these patients were at higher risk of dying (HR=1.51, CI 1.47–1.56, p<0.001) however they were less likely to be readmitted (HR=0.73, CI 0.70- 0.76, p<0.001). No excess risks of reoperation (HR=1.02, CI 0.90–1.17; p = 0.73) or revision (HR=1.00, CI 0.86–1.17; p = 0.99) were identified in the study group. Discussion: Compared to matched controls, individuals with a preoperatively identified neurological diagnosis had higher rates of mortality, dislocations, and adverse events, but this cohort was not at increased risk of reoperation or revision. This study highlights an area of focus for future research to improve the long-term outcomes in patients with neurological disease undergoing arthroplasty for an acute hip fracture. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd
