  • Citational justice and the politics of knowledge production

    • Citation is how we acknowledge our debt to those who came before; those who helped us find our way when the way was obscured because we deviated from the paths we were told to follow. Sara Ahmed reminds us that just citational practices recognize the knowledge contributions of less dominant, routinely overlooked voices. Pursuing citational justice, then, entails moving away from individualistic views of authorship and toward a shared, reciprocal understanding of how knowledge is produced. Drawing from our experiences working within HCI, we extend an invitation for a just citational practice—one that makes space for the diversity of human experience and recognizes that human-computer interactions must be responsive to cultural and geographic differences. We outline parts of our ongoing conversations as a collective to motivate a careful citation practice across our field, interrogating how we can best honor one another’s ideas and labor without alienation or appropriation.

  • Decolonial Pathways : Our Manifesto for a Decolonizing Agenda in HCI Research and Design
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: CHI EA '21: Extended Abstracts of the 2021 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. - New York, NY, USA : ACM Digital Library. - 9781450380959 ; , s. 1-9

    • As the push for intersection between decolonial and post-colonial perspectives and technology design and HCI continues to grow, the natural challenge of embracing different ways of approaching knowledge production without ’othering’ begins to emerge. In this paper, we offer what we call ’decolonial paths’, possible portals to navigate through this challenge. This collective exploration inspires five pathways for approaching decoloniality within HCI: understanding, reconsidering, changing, expanding, and reflecting. Non-prescriptive and non-definitive, these pathways offer HCI researchers a framework to investigate their own practice and the spaces of sociotechnical research and learning they inhabit.

  • Fostering HCI Research in, by, and for Latin America
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Extended Abstracts of the 2020 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, CHI 2020. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last 20 years, the Latin American Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community has been working to shed light on how the diverse populations in the region are adopting, using, and making sense of computational technologies. Latin America's tense socio-political context, plurality of languages, collectivist culture, and historical relationship with the Global North make it a unique and rich space for HCI research. Considering the growing number of studies about Latin American communities and the emergent efforts to contribute to the HCI literature, we propose to host a SIG meeting at the 2020 ACM CHI conference. Our goal is to consolidate these efforts to better promote HCI research in, by, and for Latin America, by (1) bringing together researchers, practitioners, and students who are interested in engaging with Latin America through their research and practice, (2) envisioning a shared research agenda, and (3) identifying strategies for making its contributions more visible and impactful in the international community.

  • Citational Practices: Interrogating Hegemonic Knowledge Structures in Computing Research in Latin America
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: CLIHC 2021: X Latin American Conference on Human Computer Interaction. - New York, NY, USA : ACM Digital Library. - 9781450384896 ; , s. 1-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Citations are nodes in the networks of knowledge we create. Portals to conversations with the past and bonding material with the scholarship of the present. Choosing who we cite is a practice signaling who we recognize and respect as a knowledge source. Therefore, we recognize citations as a relational practice. As this relational characteristic of citing is mediated by wealth we distribute across those who we cite, it is imperative to interrogate how just these practices are. Thus, we ought to engage with Citational Justice. Building on recent work discussing citational practices within HCI, we use the opportunity of this workshop to expand this conversation into deeper reflection on how we cite and the practices and infrastructures surrounding citations. Our goal with this workshop is two-fold. First, to create a common language to collectively reflect, interrogate our own citational practices and reverberations, while fleshing out concrete steps to make these practices just in our work and communities we are part of. Second, to invite participants to re-imagine citational practices and the systems and infrastructures necessary to make such practices feasible. We invite a diverse group of participants from the CLIHC community interested in examining their citational practices and the systems surrounding them.

  • Para Cima y Pa' Abajo : Building Bridges Between HCI Research in Latin America and in the Global North
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2023 CHI CONFERENCE ON HUMAN FACTORS IN COMPUTING SYSTEMS (CHI 2023). - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Human-computer Interaction (HCI) community has the opportunity to foster the integration of research practices across the Global South and North to begin overcoming colonial relationships. In this paper, we focus on the case of Latin America (LATAM), where initiatives to increase the representation of HCI practitioners lack a consolidated understanding of the practices they employ, the factors that infuence them, and the challenges that practitioners face. To address this knowledge gap, we employ a mixed-methods approach, comprising a survey (66 respondents) and in-depth interviews (19 interviewees). Our analyses characterize a set of research perspectives on how HCI is practiced in/about LATAM; a set of driving forces and tensions with a heavy reliance on diasporic dynamics; and a set of professional demands and associated structural limitations. We also ofer a roadmap towards building connections across HCI communities, in an attempt to rebuild HCI as a pluriverse.
