Wu, Gang, 1959- (författare) A front-end system for medical information retrieval - bringing the End-User closer to knowledge & information sources 1992 Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract Facing the rapidly increasing volume of published information within the medical domain, the health care professional is confronted with the problem of where to find and how to select relevant information. Computers are increasingly applied to provide assistance to online information retrieval. The computer systems that mediates between the searcher and the databases are referred to as "searching aids", "front-ends", "interfaces", "intermediary systems", or "gateways". Projects such as Unified Medical Languages Systems (UMLS) are ongoing to overcome the problem of multiple medical languages used in different databases and to facilitate the retrieval and integration of information from many machine-readable information sources.This thesis reviews and explores the essential aspects of search aid system design and a prototype system for computer communication and bibliographic medical information retrieval is presented. The objective of the project was to offer users an easy-to-use interface with multi-database access capability, to incorporate advanced search strategies for minimal loss of logical power, and to utilize the result of the UMLS project. The system is an application of client-server technique based on a campuswide network. The problems of system maintenance and adaptivity to local needs is also addressed. A design of an open architecture for knowledge-based intermediary systems is presented.
