  • Toward relating the kappa-symmetric and pure-spinor versions of the supermembrane

    • We study the relation between the kappa-symmetric formulation of the supermembrane in eleven dimensions and the pure-spinor version. Recently, Berkovits related the Green-Schwarz and pure-spinor superstrings. In this paper, we attempt to extend this method to the supermembrane. We show that it is possible to reinstate the reparameterisation constraints in the pure-spinor formulation of the supermembrane by introducing a topological sector and performing a similarity transformation. The resulting BRST charge is then of conventional type and is argued to be (related to) the BRST charge of the kappa-symmetric supermembrane in a formulation where all second class constraints are 'gauge unfixed' to first class constraints. In our analysis we also encounter a natural candidate for a (non-covariant) supermembrane analogue of the superstring b ghost.

    • The low energy spectrum of (3+1)-dimensional N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a spatial three-torus contains a certain number of bound states, characterized by their discrete abelian magnetic and elecric 't Hooft fluxes. At weak coupling, the wave-functions of these states are supported near points in the moduli space of flat connections where the unbroken gauge group is semi-simple. The number of such states is related to the number of normalizable bound states at threshold in the super symmetric matrix quantum mechanics wit h 1 6 supercharges based on this unbroken group. Mathematic ally, the determination of the spectrum relies on the classification of almost commuting triples with semi-simple centralizers. We complete the work begun in a previous paper, by computing the spectrum of bound states in theories based on the even-dimensional spin groups and the exceptional groups. The results satisfy the constraints of S-duality in a rather non-trivial way.

  • Low-energy spectrum of N=4 super-Yang-Mills on T-3: flat connections, bound states at threshold, and S-duality

    • We study (3+1)-dimensional N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a spatial three-torus. The low energy spectrum consists of a number of continua of states of arbitrarily low energies. Although the theory has no mass-gap, it appears that the dimensions and discrete abelian magnetic and electric 't Hooft fluxes of the continua are computable in a semi-classical approximation. The wave-functions of the low-energy states are supported on submanifolds of the moduli space of flat connections, at which various subgroups of the gauge group are left unbroken. The field theory degrees of freedom transverse to such a submanifold are approximated by supersymmetric matrix quantum mechanics with 16 supercharges, based on the semi-simple part of this unbroken group. Conjectures about the number of normalizable bound states at threshold in the latter theory play a crucial role in our analysis. In this way, we compute the low-energy spectrain the cases where the simply connected cover of the gauge group is given by SU(n), Spin(2n+1) or Sp(2n). We then show that the constraints of S-duality are obeyed for unique values of the number of bound states in the matrix quantum mechanics. In the cases based on Spin(2n+1) and Sp(2n), the proof involves surprisingly subtle combinatorial identities, which hint at a rich underlying structure.

    • We continue our studies of the low-energy spectrum of N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory on a spatial three-torus. In two previous papers, we computed the spectrum of normalizable zero-energy states for all choices of gauge group and all values of the electric and magnetic 't Hooft fluxes, and checked its invariance under the SL2(Z) S-duality group. In this paper, we refine the analysis by also decomposing the space of bound states into irreducible unitary representations of the SL3(Z) mapping class group of the three-torus. We perform a detailed study of the S-dual pairs of theories with gauge groups Spin(2n+1) and Sp(2n). The predictions of S-duality (which commutes with the mapping class group) are fulfilled as expected, but the proof requires some surprisingly intricate combinatorial infinite product identities.

    • We explore the connections between three classes of theories: A, quiver matrix models, d=2 conformal A(r) Toda field theories, and d=4 N=2 supersymmetric conformal A(r) quiver gauge theories. In particular, we analyze the quiver matrix models recently introduced by Dijkgraaf and Vafa (unpublished) and make detailed comparisons with the corresponding quantities in the Toda field theories and the N=2 quiver gauge theories. We also make a speculative proposal for how the matrix models should be modified in order for them to reproduce the instanton partition functions in quiver gauge theories in five dimensions.     • We study the N = 1* supersymmetric gauge theories with gauge groups Sp(2n) and SO(2n + 1). These theories are obtained for the corresponding N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories via a mass deformation. We show that the number of quantum vacua in the Sp(2n) theory is equal to the number of quantum vacua in the SO(2n + 1) theory. This constitutes non-trivial support for S-duality between these theories. The verification of the equality of the number of quantum vacua involves a rather esoteric identity due to Ramanujan.

    • We propose a relation between correlation functions in the 2d A(N-1) conformal Toda theories and the Nekrasov instanton partition functions in certain conformal N = 2 SU(N) 4d quiver gauge theories. Our proposal generalises the recently uncovered relation between the Liouville theory and SU(2) quivers [1]. New features appear in the analysis that have no counterparts in the Liouville case.

  • Rigid surface operators and S-duality: some proposals

    • We study surface operators in the N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with gauge groups SO(n) and Sp(2n). As recently shown by Gukov and Witten these theories have a class of rigid surface operators which are expected to be related by S-duality. The rigid surface operators are of two types, unipotent and semisimple. We make explicit proposals for how the S-duality map should act on unipotent surface operators. We also discuss semisimple surface operators and make some proposals for certain subclasses of such operators.
