    • We report on passive mode-locking of a Ti:sapphire laser employing novel saturable absorbers based on low-dimensional carbon nanostructures such as single-walled carbon nanotubes and monolayer graphene. The mode-locked operation with both saturable absorbers were characterized and compared to pure Kerr-lens mode-locking.

    • The atomic origin of the photoemission Si 2p core level, shifted at 0.35 eV higher binding energy, at the As/Si(0 0 1)-2×1 surface, is investigated. The study is based on the determination of the surface structure by means of multiple scattering analysis of As 3d azimuth photoelectron diffraction (PD) patterns. The obtained structure is used to assign the atomic origin of the Si 2p component by surface core level shift PD. We find that a single atom contributes to the core level, while, on the basis of final state calculations, a contribution from two different atoms would be expected

    • The phase transition of a metallic In chain structure on Si(111) was investigated by high-resolution photoemission. Core-level spectra clearly elucidate that the symmetry breaking at low temperature occurs only within the inner parts of the In chains. In the valence bands, the transition is accompanied by the formation of pseudogaps of 80–150 meV and the band backfolding with only marginal changes of the band dispersion. No sign of Luttinger liquid behavior is observed in the spectral function near the Fermi level. This result is generally consistent with the idea of a fluctuating one-dimensional charge-density wave state but conflicting with the present structure model for the low-temperature phase.
