  • Macromolecular organic matter in samples of the asteroid (162173) Ryugu

    • Samples of the carbonaceous asteroid (162173) Ryugu were collected and brought to Earth by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. We investigated the macromolecular organic matter in Ryugu samples and found that it contains aromatic and aliphatic carbon, ketone, and carboxyl functional groups. The spectroscopic features of the organic matter are consistent with those in chemically primitive carbonaceous chondrite meteorites that experienced parent-body aqueous alteration (reactions with liquid water). The morphology of the organic carbon includes nanoglobules and diffuse carbon associated with phyllosilicate and carbonate minerals. Deuterium and/or nitrogen-15 enrichments indicate that the organic matter formed in a cold molecular cloud or the presolar nebula. The diversity of the organic matter indicates variable levels of aqueous alteration on Ryugus parent body.

    • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contain less than or similar to 20% of the carbon in the interstellar medium. They are potentially produced in circumstellar environments (at temperatures greater than or similar to 1000 kelvin), by (similar to 10 kelvin) interstellar clouds, or by processing of carbon-rich dust grains. We report isotopic properties of PAHs extracted from samples of the asteroid Ryugu and the meteorite Murchison. The doubly-C-13 substituted compositions (Delta 2x(13)C values) of the PAHs naphthalene, fluoranthene, and pyrene are 9 to 51 parts per thousand higher than values expected for a stochastic distribution of isotopes. The Delta 2x(13)C values are higher than expected if the PAHs formed in a circumstellar environment, but consistent with formation in the interstellar medium. By contrast, the PAHs phenanthrene and anthracene in Ryugu samples have Delta 2x(13)C values consistent with formation by higher-temperature reactions.

  • Influence of the anode pore-size distribution and total electrolyte filling degree on the MCFC performance

    • Experimental data of the total cell reaction resistance as a function of the total electrolyte filling degree was measured to investigate how more electrolyte initially may be added to get as long a cell lifetime as possible. The reaction resistance of each electrode was also measured using two gas compositions and various total electrolyte filling degrees. A theoretical model for the distribution of electrolyte between the anode and the cathode as a function of the total electrolyte filling degree was used to compare the experimental data in this study with data from a symmetrical cell setup. The model takes into account the electrode pore-size distributions and considers two cases for the contact angle between the electrode and the electrolyte for the anode: a zero wetting angle (fully wetted) or reported experimental values for the wetting angle on pure Ni. It was concluded that after the cathode initially has been sufficiently filled with electrolyte the anode pores have to be smaller than the remaining ones of the cathode to allow having the anode act as a reservoir to prolong cell lifetime. The results from the experimental data and the theoretical model for electrolyte distribution were compared with results from a symmetrical setup.

    • In this work the solubility of a Ni-Al anode for MCFC has been studied at atmospheric pressure and two different temperatures using various gas compositions containing H-2/H2O/CO2. It is well known that nickel is dissolved at cathode conditions in an MCFC. However, the results in this study show that nickel can be dissolved also at the anode, indicating that the solubility increases with increasing CO2 partial pressure of the inlet gas and decreasing with increasing temperature. This agrees with the results found by other authors concerning the solubility of NiO at cathode conditions. The dissolution of Ni into the melt can proceed in two ways, either by the reduction of water or by the reduction of carbon dioxide.

    • BepiColombo Mio, also known as the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO), is intended to conduct the first detailed study of the magnetic field and environment of the innermost planet, Mercury, alongside the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO). This orbiter has five payload groups; the MaGnetic Field Investigation (MGF), the Mercury Plasma Particle Experiment (MPPE), the Plasma Wave Investigation (PWI), the Mercury Sodium Atmosphere Spectral Imager (MSASI), and the Mercury Dust Monitor (MDM). These payloads operate through the Mission Data Processor (MDP) that acts as an integrated system for Hermean environmental studies by the in situ observation of charged and energetic neutral particles, magnetic and electric fields, plasma waves, dust, and the remote sensing of radio waves and exospheric emissions. The MDP produces three kinds of coordinated data sets: Survey (L) mode for continuous monitoring, Nominal (M) mode for standard analyses of several hours in length (or more), and Burst (H) mode for analysis based on 4-20-min-interval datasets with the highest cadence. To utilize the limited telemetry bandwidth, nominal- and burst-mode data sets are partially downlinked after selections of data based on L- or L/M-mode data, respectively. Burst-mode data can be taken at preset timings, or by onboard automatic triggering. The MDP functions are implemented and tested on the ground as well as cruising spacecraft; they are responsible for conducting full scientific operations aboard spacecraft.

  • Molecular beam epitaxial growth of GaAs/GaNAsBi core-multishell nanowires

    • GaAs/GaNAsBi/GaAs core-multishell nanowires were grown using molecular beam epitaxy on Si(111) substrates. The formation of the 20 nm wide GaNAsBi shell with a regular hexagonal structure was observed. The shell is estimated to contain approximately 1.5% N and 2.6% Bi and has a compressive lattice mismatch of less than 0.2% with GaAs layers. The strain mediation by the introduction of both N and Bi suppresses the crystalline deformation, resulting in the clear formation of the GaNAsBi shell. Thus, we obtained room-temperature photoluminescence with the maximum position at approximately 1300 nm from the GaAs/GaNAsBi/GaAs core-multishell nanowires.

    • In 2018, a new training program for primary care physicians was launched in Japan. As physicians responsible for the training of new primary care physicians, we have faced many problems, particularly in rural areas. The influence of this new program on primary care physicians in rural areas of Japan has not been sufficiently investigated. The aim of this research was to improve training for primary care physicians in Japan by examining training programs in Sweden, where the population challenges are similar to those seen in Japan. In this paper, we will express our opinions and describe the differences in the primary care fostering systems and clinical research training for generalist in Japan and Sweden.

  • Experimental determination of effective surface area and conductivities in the porous anode of molten carbonate fuel cell

    • Stationary polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of a porous nickel anode in a molten carbonate fuel cell were obtained in order to determine the active surface area and conductivities with varying degree of electrolyte filling for two anode feed-gas compositions, one simulating operation with steam reformed natural gas and the other one gasified coal. The active surface area for coal gas is reduced by around 70-80% compared to the standard gas composition in the case of Li/Na carbonate. Moreover, an optimal degree of electrolyte filling was shifted toward higher filling degree in the case of operation with coal gas.In order to evaluate the experimental data a one-dimensional model was used. The reaction rate at the matrix/electrode interface is about five times higher than the average reaction rate in the whole electrode in case of 10% electrolyte filling. This result suggests that the lower limit of the filling degree of the anode should be around 15% in order to avoid non-uniform distribution of the reaction in the electrode. Therefore, in the case of applying Li/Na carbonate in the MCFC, an electrolyte distribution model taking into account the wetting properties of the electrode is required in order to set an optimal electrolyte filling degree in the electrode.
