  • Digital and Physical Testbed for Production Logistics Operations
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digitalisation and automation of existing processes are key factors for competitive industry, but still logistics operations are often dominated by manual work. A shift towards higher degree of automation within existing infrastructure is often challenged by high cost and complex processes, thus a return-on-investment is hardly achievable within decent time. The experience has shown that it is hard to assess all restrictions and interactions between new and old components before any new equipment or infrastructure is implemented and put into operation. This paper presents and discusses if the usage of digital twins representing and simulating a physical part can support the related assessing and decision-making processes. In this context, this paper presents a production logistics test-bed includes physical devices, an IoT-infrastructure and simulation software for innovation as well as operational management purposes.

  • Digital Twin Testbed and Practical Applications in Production Logistics with Real-Time Location Data
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Industrial Engineering and Management. - : Faculty of Technical Sciences. - 2217-2661. ; 12:2, s. 129-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nowadays, digital twins exist everywhere in various fields. However, an analysis of existing applications in manufacturing and logistics revealed that many entirely apply the concept. To identify when a complete implementation of the concept is beneficial, we analyse the need and the implications within production logistics. This study also presents an architecture supporting integrating a digital twin into production logistics and a corresponding application scenario. Based on this, we have derived practical applications. Each application is applied to different situations, and actual benefits can overcome the limitations of the previous studies.

  • Employing digital twins within production logistics
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2020 IEEE International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation (ICE/ITMC).
  • Konferensbidrag (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Digitalisation and automation of existing processes are key competitive factors for industry. Still, logistic operations often comprise manual effort, because the movement of goods and material places stringent requirements on the interactions between different systems, human-computer/robot-interaction as well as on changes in the operative processes. In general, the introduction and up-take of new enabling technologies, like the IoT, in complex systems evolved over decades, are challenging. The experience has shown that it is hard to assess all restrictions and interactions between new and old components before any new equipment or infrastructure is implemented and put in operation. This paper presents and discusses the usage of digital twins for supporting the decision-making processes in two different areas: Workstation design and logistics operation analysis. The results are based on tests and experiments carried out in a production logistics test-bed that includes physical devices, an IoT-infrastructure and simulation software. The digital twin is realised in a combination of using Unity and the simulation software IPS. The primary results show that there is no one-size fit all in terms of granularity of the underlying simulation model as well as for the reduction of reality in the digital twin, but the results also indicate that a context-aware digital twin supports the decision-making within a given scope.

  • Contribution of an IoT based cloud platform in the realization of data-driven in-house logistics
  • 2022
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the technical solution that enables thetransition towards data-driven smart in-house logistics is IoTbased cloud solution. Despite the noticeable progress in the associated technologies, there are limited access to the empirical studies regarding the contribution of implementation of theseplatforms in the realization of data-driven smart in-houselogistics. Related to this issue, the aim of this paper is two folded. The first one is to figure out the requirements that should beposed by in-house logistics system owners to platform service providers. To address this matter, this paper reviewed some ofthe earlier works, which identified the evaluation criterion ofIoT based cloud platforms. To accomplish the first aim, the specific requirements of in-house logistics systems on cloud platforms are highlighted. The second one is to evaluate the implementation process of an IoT based cloud platform within an in-house logistics testbed. The latter led us to identify the contribution of IoT based cloud services in the realization ofdata-driven in-house logistics. The results show that implementation of IoT based cloud platform can contribute tothese areas: real-time track and trace, visibility to supply chain partners, planning and order management, and machine state monitoring.

  • Data-driven manufacturing simulation: Towards a CPS-based approach
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Swedish Production Symposium. - : IOS Press.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Manufacturing simulation has been used as a decision support tool to solve various problems in production systems. However, with the advent of Industry 4.0 and CPS, manufacturing simulation becomes not only a tool for supporting decision-making but also essential for operation, monitoring, and forecasting the production system. In this paper, a traditional approach and a CPS-based approach in manufacturing simulation are compared. In the CPS-based approach, the key processes are divided into 1) data gathering, 2) modeling and simulation, and 3) simulation results analytics and feedback. In addition, a SWOT analysis is conducted to discuss the future application of the manufacturing simulation.

  • A Systematic Review on Technologies for Data-DrivenProduction Logistics: Their Role from a Holistic and ValueCreation Perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Logistics. - : MDPI AG. - 2305-6290 .- 2305-6290. ; 5:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A data-driven approach in production logistics is adopted as a response to challengessuch as low visibility and system rigidity. One important step for such a transition is to identifythe enabling technologies from a value-creating perspective. The existing corpus of literature hasdiscussed the benefits and applications of smart technologies in overall manufacturing or logistics. However, there is limited discussion specifically on a production logistics level, from a systematicperspective. This paper addresses two issues in this respect by conducting a systematic literaturereview and analyzing 142 articles. First, it covers the gap in literature concerning mapping theapplication of these smart technologies to specific production logistic activities. Ten groups oftechnologies were identified and production logistics activities divided into three major categories.A quantitative share assessment of the technologies in production logistics activities was carriedout. Second, the ultimate goal of implementing these technologies is to create business value. This isaddressed in this research by presenting the “production logistics data lifecycle” and the importanceof having a balanced holistic perspective in technology development. The result of this paper isbeneficial to build a ground to transit towards a data-driven state by knowing the applications anduse cases described in the literature for the identified technologies.

  • Capturing value through data-driven internal logistics: case studies on enhancing managerial capacity
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Production & Manufacturing Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2169-3277. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A key motivation to adopt data-driven solutions in facility-internal logistic systems is to create more responsive, efficient, and sustainable systems through a seamless data flow. There is thus a need to analyse the logistics system’s requirements from a data efficiency perspective. This paper presents and demonstrates a novel method, based on established literature, to assure that a transition to data-driven internal logistics leads to improvements in operational performance objectives. First, we identify wastes on the shopfloor caused by inefficient data flows. Second, we portray the trajectories of managerial capacities enhancements, supporting decision makers toward a to-be scenario. Two case studies are presented where the method has been implemented and used for demonstration and validation purposes. The results show that the method is beneficial in a waste-elimination and continuous improvement setting, linking improvements, detected wastes, enabling technologies, and managerial capacities in terms of monitoring, control, optimization, and autonomy.

  • Data-Driven Production Logistics : Future Scenario in Two Swedish Companies Based on Discrete Event Simulation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Advances in Production Management Systems. Production Management Systems for Responsible Manufacturing, Service, and Logistics Futures - IFIP WG 5.7 International Conference, APMS 2023, Proceedings. - : Springer Nature. ; , s. 691-706
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent technological advances in capturing real-time and large amounts of data provide an opportunity for production logistics systems to enhance their performance. Transitioning to a data-driven system is a complex and multifaceted process. While many articles highlight the benefits of data-driven applications, there are few empirical studies on how production logistics are influenced at the system level. This paper examines the potential benefits of transitioning to a data-driven production logistics system through two case studies. The first case involves an internal material flow between two departments in a large Swedish heavy automotive manufacturer with complex multi-product internal logistic flows. The second case involves the cross-docking flow of pallets in one terminal of a major courier industry player in the Nordic region with diverse customers. The current situation in each case was compared to a smart data-driven state through discrete event simulation, expert interviews, observations, and document review. The analysis shows that a seamless data flow can improve the overall performance of the systems in terms of lead-time, resource utilization efficiency, responsiveness, and space efficiency. The study provides insights towards creating a roadmap for the transition to a data-driven production logistics system.

  • Data-driven Production Logistics : A value-oriented transition approach
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the current manufacturing environment, the constant evolution ofproducts and services creates complexities in managing the flow ofinformation. Production logistics (PL), as a vital element of manufacturingsystems, are highly influenced by these dynamics. Earlier research hasemphasised the need for seamless data flow from start to finish to cope withthese dynamics through digitalisation transition projects. However, earlierresearch argue that these projects are often technology-oriented and lack avalue-oriented perspective.Earlier research has indicated that digitalisation initiatives such asIndustry 4.0 emphasise the technological aspects of transitioning to a datadrivenfuture for production logistics. Thus, it is argued by earlier researchthat value creation is not solely technical but also socio-technical,highlighting the interplay between technology and social factors in shapingindustrial outcomes. Existing literature often overlooks the critical aspectof value orientation. This thesis contends that it is crucial for companies toadopt frameworks that guide the transition from data to value. Theseframeworks are designed to emphasise a value-oriented perspective, whichis particularly important when advancing towards data-driven productionlogistics. However, three major areas require further research. Firstly, it isimportant to understand the characteristics of a data-driven PL system.Secondly, there is an absence of tools or systematic methods to assess theflow of information in production logistics for the purpose of mapping valueand pinpointing waste resulting from data inefficiencies. Thirdly, it isnecessary to understand how to align data-driven solutions with the sociotechnicalenvironment and user-centric considerations. This thesis begins by identifying PL system requirements through asystematic literature review, case studies, and experiments, establishing asystematic foundation for value creation in the transition to data-driven PL.It also proposed a method for detection of waste on the shopfloor caused byinformation flow inefficiencies. The major contribution to the literature is the proposed framework forvalue-oriented transition to data-driven production logistics. Thisframework includes several findings of the thesis. The findings offerpractical tools for waste detection, digital service design, and acomprehensive framework for a value-oriented transition in data-drivenproduction logistics, providing valuable guidance to industry practitioners.
