  • Conceptual design of the AGATA 2 pi array at LNL
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 1049
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL), Italy. In this installation, AGATA will consist, at the beginning, of 13 AGATA triple clusters (ATCs) with an angular coverage of 1n,and progressively the number of ATCs will increase up to a 2 pi angular coverage. This setup will exploit both stable and radioactive ion beams delivered by the Tandem-PIAVE-ALPI accelerator complex and the SPES facility. The new implementation of AGATA at LNL will be used in two different configurations, firstly one coupled to the PRISMA large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer and lately a second one at Zero Degrees, along the beam line. These two configurations will allow us to cover a broad physics program, using different reaction mechanisms, such as Coulomb excitation, fusion-evaporation, transfer and fission at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. These setups have been designed to be coupled with a large variety of complementary detectors such as charged particle detectors, neutron detectors, heavy-ion detectors, high-energy gamma-ray arrays, cryogenic and gasjet targets and the plunger device for lifetime measurements. We present in this paper the conceptual design, characteristics and performance figures of this implementation of AGATA at LNL.

  • High-spin states in 212Po above the α-decaying (18+) isomer
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 834
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nucleus 212Po has been produced through the fragmentation of a 238U primary beam at 1 GeV/nucleon at GSI, separated with the FRagment Separator, FRS, and studied via isomer γ-decay spectroscopy with the RISING setup. Two delayed previously unknown γ rays have been observed. One has been attributed to the E3 decay of a 21− isomeric state feeding the α-emitting 45-s (18+) high-spin isomer. The other γ-ray line has been assigned to the decay of a higher-lying 23+ metastable state. These are the first observations of high-spin states above the 212Po (18+) isomer, by virtue of the selectivity obtained via ion-by-ion identification of 238U fragmentation products. Comparison with shell-model calculations points to shortfalls in the nuclear interactions involving high-j proton and neutron orbitals, to which the region around Z∼100 is sensitive.

  • The Simons Observatory : science goals and forecasts
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1475-7516. ; :2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Simons Observatory (SO) is a new cosmic microwave background experiment being built on Cerro Toco in Chile, due to begin observations in the early 2020s. We describe the scientific goals of the experiment, motivate the design, and forecast its performance. SO will measure the temperature and polarization anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background in six frequency bands centered at: 27, 39, 93, 145, 225 and 280 GHz. The initial con figuration of SO will have three small-aperture 0.5-m telescopes and one large-aperture 6-m telescope, with a total of 60,000 cryogenic bolometers. Our key science goals are to characterize the primordial perturbations, measure the number of relativistic species and the mass of neutrinos, test for deviations from a cosmological constant, improve our understanding of galaxy evolution, and constrain the duration of reionization. The small aperture telescopes will target the largest angular scales observable from Chile, mapping approximate to 10% of the sky to a white noise level of 2 mu K-arcmin in combined 93 and 145 GHz bands, to measure the primordial tensor-to-scalar ratio, r, at a target level of sigma(r) = 0.003. The large aperture telescope will map approximate to 40% of the sky at arcminute angular resolution to an expected white noise level of 6 mu K-arcmin in combined 93 and 145 GHz bands, overlapping with the majority of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope sky region and partially with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. With up to an order of magnitude lower polarization noise than maps from the Planck satellite, the high-resolution sky maps will constrain cosmological parameters derived from the damping tail, gravitational lensing of the microwave background, the primordial bispectrum, and the thermal and kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects, and will aid in delensing the large-angle polarization signal to measure the tensor-to-scalar ratio. The survey will also provide a legacy catalog of 16,000 galaxy clusters and more than 20,000 extragalactic sources.

  • Product characteristics in simultaneous crystallization of NaCl and CaSO4 from aqueous solution under different evaporation rates
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Desalination. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0011-9164 .- 1873-4464. ; 457, s. 85-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Knowledge about simultaneous crystallization in evaporative processes for water reuse is important for the promotion of particles with desirable characteristics. In this work, simultaneous crystallization of sodium chloride and calcium sulfate hemihydrate (HH) from aqueous solutions in unseeded batch mode is addressed. Both the crystallization mechanisms and the resulting particle morphological features have been identified. NaCl particles are generated by heterogeneous primary nucleation in solution, followed by growth and NaCl agglomeration. Calcium sulfate hemihydrate (HH) particles are also formed by heterogeneous primary nucleation in solution followed by crystal growth. HH crystals agglomerate with NaCl in all particle size ranges. Product particles are thus agglomerates with multimodal population densities in submillimetric size ranges, with HH widely dispersed throughout the size span of the particulate product. In comparison with NaCl binary solutions, simultaneous crystallization promotes the formation of larger, less polydisperse NaCl particles, Low super saturations (low evaporation rates) inhibit HH agglomeration with NaCl. The submillimetric sized particles formed during simultaneous crystallization of NaCl and HI-I indicate ease in solid-liquid downstream separation.

  • PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS IN SIMULTANEOUS CRYSTALLIZATION OF NaCL AND CaSO4 FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION WITH SEEDING
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Desalination. - : ELSEVIER. - 0011-9164 .- 1873-4464. ; 474
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Zero liquid discharge strategies for industrial wastewater treatment have become prominent in recent years. When evaporative simultaneous crystallization is applied, knowledge about the particle crystallization mechanisms and morphology are important to ease solids downstream handling and for recovery of their valuable components. In this work, batch simultaneous crystallization of sodium chloride (NaCl) and calcium sulphate hemihydrate (CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O) from aqueous solution was studied. It was found that CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O is not an effective substrate for NaCl heterogeneous nucleation, but agglomerates with NaCl particles instead. CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O particles on the surface of NaCl crystals sterically hamper agglomeration of NaCl particles with each other and, for a sufficiently high CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O seed load, cover the NaCl crystals so that NaCl supersaturation rises, inducing NaCl primary nucleation. Simultaneous crystallization of CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O and NaCl yields a satisfactory product for downstream handling even for high CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O content in the crystallizer. However, seeding with CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O is not recommended as it reduces the mean size and increases product size dispersion. NaCl seeding may be considered if it is desirable to separate CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O from NaCl downstream the crystallizer by size classification, as it favors CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O to build up in product sizes of 200 mu m and below.

  • In Situ Observation of Epitaxial Growth during Evaporative Simultaneous Crystallization from Aqueous Electrolytes in Droplets
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Crystals. - : MDPI AG. - 2073-4352. ; 11:9, s. 1122-1122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, crystallization phenomena were investigated by real-time in situ observation of seeded droplets under evaporation using a self-developed hot-stage platform. Ternary solutions at eutonic conditions at 25 °C were investigated for the following systems: NaCl–KCl–H2O, NaCl–CaSO4–H2O, and NaCl–Na2SO4–H2O. Evidence of epitaxial growth was found for aqueous NaCl–KCl and aqueous NaCl–Na2SO4. Sodium chloride nucleated and grew epitaxially upon the other substrates in a larger proportion compared with the inverse. This observation could be related to the higher solubility, and consequently higher residual supersaturation of NaCl regarding the other components. Hopper-like NaCl crystals developed in almost all systems. The results may help devise strategies to control particle morphologies and purity in industrial crystallization from complex systems.

  • Strategies to control product characteristics in simultaneous crystallization of NaCl and KCl from aqueous solution : seeding with NaCl and KCl
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: CrystEngComm. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 1466-8033 .- 1466-8033. ; 22:44, s. 7590-7600
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work we developed an approach for the simultaneous crystallization of NaCl and KCl from their aqueous solution by concomitantly seeding both salts. Experiments were designed based on the ternary system phase diagram. The mother liquor concentration was chosen near the eutonic condition at its boiling temperature. The seeds for each compound had different sizes but the amounts were calculated to provide nearly equal surface areas for each material. Elementary phenomena were assessed and the chemical composition in different particle size ranges within the products was analysed. Despite the presence of seeds from each component in the suspension under crystallization, the formation of mixed composition polycrystalline particles was observed. A seeding protocol involving much larger KCl than NaCl seeds resulted in an easily separable product with two distinct populations. In general, segregation of the salts through the size ranges followed the trend induced by seeding, highlighting the possibility of retrieving relatively pure solid fractions of each salt.
