  • Microscale Marangoni actuation : All-optical and all-electrical methods
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Ultramicroscopy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-3991 .- 1879-2723. ; 106:8-9, s. 815-821
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present experimental results from an all-optical microfluidic platform that may be complimented by a thin film all-electrical network. Using these configurations we have studied the microfluidic convective flow systems of silicone oil, glycerol, and 1,3,5-trinitrotoluene on open surfaces through the production of surface tension gradients derived from thermal gradients. We show that sufficient localized thermal variation can be created utilizing surface plasmons and/or engaging individually addressable resistive thermal elements. Both studies manipulate fluids via Marangoni forces, each having their unique exploitable advantages. Surface plasmon excitation in metal foils are the driving engine of many physical-, chemical-, and bio-sensing applications. Incorporating, for the first time, the plasmon concept in microfluidics, our results thus demonstrate great potential for simultaneous fluid actuation and sensing. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. • Mechanical analysis of second order helical structure in electrical cable
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Solids and Structures. - : Elsevier BV. - 0020-7683 .- 1879-2146. ; 44:5, s. 1657-1679
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new model for calculating the response of electrical cables to bending has been developed accounting for multi-order helical structure and frictional effects. Stresses occurring in wires and the number of slipping wires were suggested as key properties in terms of expectation of cable life time. The model was applied to chosen cables and the magnitudes of the mentioned key properties were calculated. Parametric study was also done to investigate how these values are affected by changing the properties of the cable. It has been shown that increasing the pressure from jacket or insulation material causes larger stress while it prevents the slippage of wires. Applying a tensile force to the cable produces the same result, whereas using larger lay angles for both conductors and wires decreases internal stress and prevents the slippage.

  • Mechanical models for electrical cables
  • 2005
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A theoretical and experimental study of mechanical properties of electrical cables with multi order helical structure has been performed. Relations between applied deformations and local strains in the first order helical structure have been developed. The model is then generalized with a hierarchical approach where the strains at any order helical structure are expressed as functions of strains in the upper order helix under the assumption that all components are sticking to each other. The force balance between the strains and the friction forces is considered. When the cable is exposed to small bending curvature, the slippage of the component is prevented by the frictional force. At this stage, the components of the cable behave as solid beams. Slippage occurs between the components when the tensile force in the components overcomes the frictional force. This state occurs at sufficiently large bending curvatures and results in a variable bending stiffness varying with the magnitude of the applied bending curvature. The response of the cable to pure bending is measured and the data is evaluated using the theoretical model described above. Magnitudes of un- known properties of the cable are estimated by comparing the theoretical and experimental data. To utilize the model in terms of life time estimation, a number of parameters were suggested to relate the mechanical properties of the cable to wear and fatigue. A parametric study has been done to investigate how these parameters are affected by changing cable properties or the loading condition.

  • Numerical modeling of highly swirling flows in a through-flow cylindrical hydrocyclone
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: AIChE Journal. - : Wiley. - 0001-1541 .- 1547-5905. ; 52:10, s. 3334-3344
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article aims to identify the most appropriate numerical methodology for simulating hydrocyclone flows with high swirl numbers. The numerical results are validated against the tangential velocity measurements from a cylindrical hydrocyclone with a swirl number of 8.1, which is twice the typical swirl magnitude of industrial hydrocyclones. The linear and quadratic formulations of the Reynolds stress transport (RST) model are used to simulate the anisotropic swirling turbulent flow three-dimensionally in the commercial software package Fluent (TM). The tangentical velocity profiles predicted by the quadratic RST model are in good agreement with experimental data. They also show Rankine vortex patterns over the entire flow domain. In contrast, the linear RST model fails to predict this important swirl flow feature. In addition, both models predicted a complex axial flow reversal pattern not previously reported in hydrocyclones. This study clearly shows that the quadratic RST model is preferable for future hydrocyclone simulations, especially when the swirl number is large. All necessary physical and numerical parameters used to obtain converged results are given in this article.

  • Simulating Single-phase swirling flows in hyderocyclones
  • 2006
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aims to develop a numerical methodology for modelling single-phase hydrocyclone flows without employing empirical model modifications. Its final application to the designing of novel hydrocyclones requires it to be accurate for different geometries and operating conditions. Different solution methods offering varying degrees of solution accuracy and requiring different lengths of simulation time were developed. When used together appropriately, these methods provide timely and valuable information suitable for different stages of hydrocyclone design cycle.
