  • Magnetostructural transition in Fe5SiB2 observed with neutron diffraction
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Solid State Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-4596 .- 1095-726X. ; 235, s. 113-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The crystal and magnetic structure of Fe5SiB2 has been studied by a combination of X-ray and neutron diffraction. Also, the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy constant has been estimated from magnetisation measurements. High quality samples have been prepared using high temperature synthesis and subsequent heat treatment protocols. The crystal structure is tetragonal within the space group I4/mcm and the compound behaves ferromagnetically with a Curie temperature of 760 K. At 172 K a spin reorientation occurs in the compound and the magnetic moments go from aligning along the c-axis (high T) down to the ab-plane (low T). The magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy constant has been estimated to 0.3 MJ/m3 at 300 K.

  • Insights into formation and stability of tau-MnAlZ(x) (Z = C and B)
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Alloys and Compounds. - : Elsevier BV. - 0925-8388 .- 1873-4669. ; 692, s. 198-203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The tau-phase MnAl alloys are promising candidate for rare earth free permanent magnets. In this study, In order to better understand the MnAl epsilon ->tau phase transition mechanism in a continuous cooling process and metastable MnAl tau-phase high temperature stability, Mn0.54Al0.46, Mn0.55Al0.45C0.02 and Mn0.55Al0.45B0.02 alloys were systematically studied by in situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SR-XRD). The relationship between tau-phase formation tendency and different cooling rates of Mn0.55Al0.45C0.02 was investigated. Besides, the high temperature stabilities of undoped tau-MnAl and carbon/boron doped tau-MnAl were studied. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) was also employed to study the phase transformation as well. The research results show that a high cooling rate of 600 degrees C/min leads to a 50/50 wt% mixture of epsilon- and tau-phase; almost pure tau-phase was obtained when cooled at a moderate cooling rate of 10 degrees C/min; while for a slow cooling rate of 2 degrees C/min, the tau-phase partially decomposed into beta and gamma(2) phases. No intermediate epsilon'-phase was observed during the epsilon ->tau phase transition during the experiments. For the boron and carbon doped tau-MnAl, the 800 degrees C high temperature stability experiments reveal that C stabilizes the tau-MnAl while doped B destabilises the tetragonal structure and it decomposes into beta- and gamma(2)-phases.

  • A Data Parallel Finite Element Method for Computational Fluid Dynamics on the Connection Machine Systems
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 0045-7825 .- 1879-2138. ; 99:1, s. 113-134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  A finite element method for computational fluid dynamics has been implemented on the Connection Machine systems CM-2 and CM-200. An implicit iterative solution strategy, based on the pre-conditioned matrix-free GMRES algorithm, is employed. Parallel data structures built on both nodal and elemental sets are used to achieve maximum parallelization. Communication primitives provided through the Connection Machine Scientific Software Library substantially improved the overall performance of the program. Computations of three-dimensional compressible flows using unstructured meshes having close to one million elements, such as a complete airplane, demonstrate that the Connection Machine systems are suitable for these applications. Performance comparisons are also carried out with the vector computers Cray Y-MP and Convex C-1.

  • An Efficient Communication Strategy for Finite Element Methods on the Connection Machine CM-5 System
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering. - 0045-7825 .- 1879-2138. ; 113:3-4, s. 363-387
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this paper is to propose communication procedures suitable for unstructured finite element solvers implemented on distributed-memory parallel computers such as the Connection Machine CM-5 system. First, a data-parallel implementation of the recursive spectral bisection (RSB) algorithm proposed by Pothen et al. is presented. The RSB algorithm is associated with a node renumbering scheme which improves data locality of reference. Two-step gather and scatter operations taking advantage of this data locality are then designed. These communication primitives make use of the indirect addressing capability of the CM-5 vector units to achieve high gather and scatter bandwidths. The performance of the proposed communication strategy is illustrated on large-scale three-dimensional fluid dynamics problems

  • Scalability of Finite Element Applications on Distributed–Memory Parallel Computers
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering. - 0045-7825 .- 1879-2138. ; 119:1-2, s. 61-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper demonstrates that scalability and competitive efficiency can be achieved for unstructured grid finite element applications on distributed memory machines, such as the Connection Machine CM-5 system. The efficiency of finite element solvers is analyzed through two applications: an implicit computational aerodynamics application and an explicit solid mechanics application. Scalability of mesh decomposition and of data mapping strategies is also discussed. Numerical examples that support the claims for problems with an excess of fourteen million variables are presented.

  • Transfer of a cyanobacterial neurotoxin within a temperate aquatic ecosystem suggests pathways for human exposure
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 107:20, s. 9252-9257
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • beta-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA), a neurotoxic nonprotein amino acid produced by most cyanobacteria, has been proposed to be the causative agent of devastating neurodegenerative diseases on the island of Guam in the Pacific Ocean. Because cyanobacteria are widespread globally, we hypothesized that BMAA might occur and bioaccumulate in other ecosystems. Here we demonstrate, based on a recently developed extraction and HPLC-MS/MS method and long-term monitoring of BMAA in cyanobacterial populations of a temperate aquatic ecosystem (Baltic Sea, 2007-2008), that BMAA is biosynthesized by cyanobacterial genera dominating the massive surface blooms of this water body. BMAA also was found at higher concentrations in organisms of higher trophic levels that directly or indirectly feed on cyanobacteria, such as zooplankton and various vertebrates (fish) and invertebrates (mussels, oysters). Pelagic and benthic fish species used for human consumption were included. The highest BMAA levels were detected in the muscle and brain of bottom-dwelling fishes. The discovery of regular biosynthesis of the neurotoxin BMAA in a large temperate aquatic ecosystem combined with its possible transfer and bioaccumulation within major food webs, some ending in human consumption, is alarming and requires attention.

  • Characterization of Surface Structure and Oxidation/Reduction Behaviour of Pd-Pt/Al2O3 Model Catalysts
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 120:49, s. 28009-28020
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Structural and morphological characterisation of bimetallic Pd-Pt/Al2O3 model cat- alysts are performed using X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, transmis- sion electron microscopy and CO chemisorption. Further, the catalysts were studied under oxidising and reducing conditions using both X-ray absorption spectroscopy and low-energy ion scattering spectroscopy. For the as-prepared catalysts, the existence of alloyed bimetallic Pd-Pt particles and of (tetragonal) PdO were found for the samples calcined at 800 C. PdO is present in form of crystals at the surface of the Pd-Pt par- ticles or as isolated PdO crystals on the support oxide. Bimetallic Pd-Pt nanoparticles were only formed on the Pd-Pt catalysts after calcination at 800 C. The results show that the Pd-Pt nanoparticles undergo reversible changes in surface structure composi- tion and chemical state in response to oxidising or reducing conditions. Under oxidising conditions Pd segregates to the shell and oxidises forming PdO, while under reducing conditions regions with metallic Pd and Pd-Pt alloys were observed at the surface. No bimetallic Pd-Pt nanoparticles were observed for the sample initially calcined at 500 C, but instead isolated monometallic particles, where small Pt particles are easily oxidised under O2 treatment. In the monometallic catalysts, the Pd is found to be com- pletely oxidised already after calcination and to consist of metallic Pd after reductive treatment.

  • Massively Parallel Computing: Unstructured Finite Element Simulations
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: NAFEMS. ; , s. 24-29
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Massively parallel computing holds the promise of extreme performance. Critical for achieving high performance is the ability to exploit locality of reference and effective management of the communication resources. This article describes two communication primitives and associated mapping strategies that have been used for several different unstructured, three-dimensional, finite element applications in computational fluid dynamics and structural mechanics.
