  • Perception of non-native accent in relation to intelligibility and attitude
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: New Sounds 2016. International Symposium on the Acquisition of Second Language Speech 10-12 June 2016. Aarhus, DK.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The perception of speakers with a non-native accent in a communicative situation brings up several aspects: is the speaker intelligible or pleasant to listen to, and what attitudes do the listeners get towards the speaker (cf. Boyd, Abelin & Dorriots, 1999)? Additionally we address the question of whether intelligibility is facilitated when the listener has the same L1 as the non-native speaker. We performed listener tests of recordings of 10 adult Somali speakers learning Swedish as their L2. The stimuli consisted of 8 read sentences per speaker. 20 L1 Swedish speakers and 20 L1 Somali speakers listened to the 8 stimulus sentences once. They were asked to rate each speaker, using Likert-like scales concerning: degree of foreign accent, intelligibility, pleasantness, and emotion. The judgments were correlated with auditory analyses of phoneme realization and word stress, and acoustic analyses of vowel/consonant duration (cf. Zetterholm, 2014). The hypotheses were that listeners with the same L1 accent would rate speakers lower on degree of foreign accent and higher on intelligibility than the Swedish listeners would. This is in accordance with studies of Munro & Derwing (1995), Munro (2008) who discussed how e.g. L1 background and L2 accent contribute to the intelligibility of non-native speech and a study by Mora & Ludwig (2015) who demonstrated how L2-English was faster to process for L2-listeners compared to L1-listeners. We also predicted that a larger amount of phonemic errors and louder speech (cf. Abelin & Boyd, 2000) would yield less positive classifications of degree of foreign accent and emotions. Preliminary results show that there is a difference between L1 and L2 listeners both for accent rate and intelligibility. There is also a correlation between judged degree of accent and the listeners’ attitude. References Abelin, Å., & Boyd, S. (2000). • Economic potential for substitution of fossil fuels with liquefied biomethane in Swedish iron and steel industry – Synergy and competition with other sectors
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Energy Conversion and Management. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0196-8904 .- 1879-2227. ; 209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, the iron and steel industry (ISI) is a major source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Most of the emissions result from the use of fossil reducing agents. Nevertheless, the use of fossil fuels for other purposes must also be eliminated in order to reach the Swedish emissions reduction targets. In this study, we investigate the possibility to replace fossil gaseous and liquid fuels used for heating in the ISI, with liquefied biomethane (LBG) produced through gasification of forest residues. We hypothesize that such utilization of fuels in the Swedish ISI is insufficient to independently drive the development of large-scale LBG production, and that other sectors demanding LBG, e.g., for transportation, can be expected to influence the economic potential for the ISI to switch to LBG. The paper investigates how demand for LBG from other sectors can contribute to, or prevent, a phase-out of fossil fuels used for heating purposes in the ISI under different future energy market scenarios, with additional analysis of the impact of a CO2 emissions charge. A geographically explicit cost-minimizing biofuel production localization model is combined with heat integration and energy market scenario analysis. The results show that from a set of possible future energy market scenarios, none yielded more than a 9% replacement of fossil fuels used for heating purposes in the ISI, and only when there was also a demand for LBG from other sectors. The scenarios corresponding to a more ambitious GHG mitigation policy did not achieve higher adoption of LBG, due to corresponding higher biomass prices. A CO2 charge exceeding 200 EUR/tonCO2 would be required to achieve a full phase-out of fossil fuels used for heating purposes in the ISI. We conclude that with the current policy situation, substitution of fossil fuels by LBG will not be economically feasible for the Swedish ISI.

  • F-pattern Analysis of Professional Imitations of "hallå" in three Swedish Dialects
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Working Papers. ; 52, s. 25-28
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We describe preliminary results of an acoustic-phonetic study of voice imitations, which is ultimately aimed towards developing an explanatory approach to similar-sounding voices. Such voices are readily obtained by way of imitations, which were elicited by asking an adult-male, professional imitator to utter two tokens of the Swedish word “hallå” in a telephone-answering situation and three Swedish dialects (Gothenburg, Stockholm, Skania). Formant-frequency (F1, F2, F3, F4) patterns were measured at several landmarks of the main phonetic segments (‘a’, ‘l’, ‘å’), and cross-examined using the imitator’s token-averaged F-pattern and those obtained by imitation. The final ‘å’-segment seems to carry the bulk of differences across imitations, and between the imitator’s patterns and those of his imitations. There is however a notable constancy in F1 and F2 from the ‘a’-segment nearly to the end of the ‘l’-segment, where the imitator seems to have had fewer degrees of articulatory freedom.

  • Detection of imitated voices : who are reliable earwitnesses?
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The international journal of speech language and the law. - London : Equinox Publishing. - 1748-8885 .- 1748-8893. ; 17:1, s. 25-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Factors affecting an individual's ability to identify people aurally are of forensic importance. This paper investigates how topic, dialect, gender, age, and hearing status affect detection of an imitated voice. Two imitations of the same person, but on different topics, were used as familiarization voices. One topic was associated with this person, and the other was not. Using discrimination sensitivity (d-prime) it was found that topic had a significant impact on d', as did age (but only when the topic was not associated with the imitated person). Dialect, gender and hearing status were not significant. The older group of listeners was less convinced by the imitations and in particular the one not associated with the person being imitated. These results imply that the validity of earwitness evidence is negatively affected by age and topic.
