  • Organo-ptii complexes for potent photodynamic inactivation of multi-drug resistant bacteria and the influence of configuration
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Advanced Science. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 2198-3844. ; 11:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PtII based organometallic photosensitizers (PSs) have emerged as novel potent photodynamic inactivation (PDI) reagents through their enhanced intersystem crossing (ISC) processes. Currently, few PtII PSs have been investigated as antibacterial materials, with relatively poor performances reported and with structure-activity relationships not well described. Herein, a pair of configurational isomers are reported of Bis-BODIPY (4,4-difluoro-boradizaindacene) embedded PtII PSs. The cis-isomer (cis-BBP) displayed enhanced 1O2 generation and better bacterial membrane anchoring capability as compared to the trans-isomer (trans-BBP). The effective PDI concentrations (efficiency > 99.9%) for cis-BBP in Acinetobacter baumannii (multi-drug resistant (MDR)) and Staphylococcus aureus are 400 nM (12 J cm−2) and 100 nM (18 J cm−2), respectively; corresponding concentrations and light doses for trans-BBP in the two bacteria are 2.50 µM (30 J cm−2) and 1.50 µM (18 J cm−2), respectively. The 50% and 90% minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC50 and MIC90) ratio of trans-BBP to cis-BBP is 22.22 and 24.02 in A. baumannii (MDR); 21.29 and 22.36 in methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA), respectively. Furthermore, cis-BBP displays superior in vivo antibacterial performance, with acceptable dark and photoinduced cytotoxicity. These results demonstrate cis-BBP is a robust light-assisted antibacterial reagent at sub-micromolecular concentrations. More importantly, configuration of PtII PSs should be an important issue to be considered in further PDI reagents design.

  • Drip irrigation improves spring wheat water productivity by reducing leaf area while increasing yield
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Agronomy. - : Elsevier BV. - 1161-0301. ; 143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To mitigate the climate change-induced water shortage and realize the sustainable development of agriculture, drip irrigation, a more efficient water-saving irrigation method, has been intensively implemented in most arid agricultural regions in the world. However, compared to traditional border irrigation, how drip irrigation affects the biophysical conditions in the cropland and how crops physiologically respond to changes in biophysical conditions in terms of water, heat and carbon exchange remain largely unknown. In view of the above situation, to reveal the mechanism of drip irrigation in improving spring wheat water productivity, paired field experiments based on drip irrigation and border irrigation were conducted to extensively monitor water and heat fluxes at a typical spring wheat field (Triticum aestivum L.) in Northwest China during 2017–2020. The results showed that drip irrigation improved yield by 10.3 % and crop water productivity (i.e., yield-to-evapotranspiration-ratio) by 15.6 %, but reduced LAI by 16.9 % in contrast with border irrigation. Under drip irrigation, the lateral development of spring wheat roots was promoted by higher soil temperature combined with frequent dry-wet alternation in the shallow soil layer (0–20 cm), which was the basis for efficient absorption of water and fertilizer, as well as efficient formation of photosynthate. Meanwhile, drip irrigation increased net radiation and decreased latent heat flux by inhibiting leaf growth, thereby increased sensible heat, causing a higher soil temperature (+1.10 ℃) and canopy temperature (+1.11 ℃). Further analysis proved that soil temperature was the key factor affecting yield formation. Based on the above conditions, the decrease in leaf distribution coefficient (−0.030) led to the decrease in evapotranspiration (−5.7 %) and the increase in ear distribution coefficient (+0.029). Therefore, drip irrigation emphasized the role of soil moisture in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum, enhanced crop activity by increasing field temperature, especially soil temperature, and finally improved yield and water productivity via carbon reallocation. The study revealed the mechanism of drip irrigation for improving spring wheat yield, and would contribute to improving Earth system models in representing agricultural cropland ecosystems with drip irrigation and predicting the subsequent biophysical and biogeochemical feedbacks to climate change.

  • Research on the Interactive Energy Management of Supply and Demand in a Distributed Generation System Based on the WCVaR Model
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Zhongguo Dianji Gongcheng Xuebao/Proceedings of the Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering. - : Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering. - 0258-8013. ; 39:15, s. 4468-4477
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to improve the utilization level of new energy power generation and to measure the risk brought by its uncertainty. This paper used supply and demand coordination as a means to enhance system operation economy and to absorb renewable energy. Aiming at output fluctuation and uncertainty of renewable distributed power, the worst conditional value at risk (WCVaR) theory was introduced in order to evaluate profit risk in system energy trading. A benefit risk model of energy management including operation cost of distributed power, interactive cost of demand side and mutual benefit was developed for energy management system, and the objective was to maximize system profit and to limit risk with an acceptable level. When random variables obeyed the discrete bounding constraint distribution, the complex min-max structure was transformed to a deterministic semi definite programming solved by the Lagrange duality theory. Simulation results show that the proposed model can effectively avoid return fluctuation risk caused by new energy output uncertainty, meanwhile it provides the theoretical guidance for energy management research of the renewable energy generation system.

  • Regulating Thiol Ligands of p-Type Colloidal Quantum Dots for Efficient Infrared Solar Cells
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACS Energy Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2380-8195. ; 6:5, s. 1970-1989
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The p-type semiconducting colloidal quantum dot (CQD), working as a hole conductor in CQD solar cells (CQDSCs), is critical for charge carrier extraction and therefore, to large extent, determines the device's photovoltaic performance. However, during the preparation of a p-type CQD solid film on the top of an n-type CQD solid film, forming a p-n heterojunction within the CQDSCs, the optoelectronic properties of the underlayered n-type CQD solid film are significantly affected by conventional 1,2-ethanedithiol (EDT) ligands due to its high reactivity. Herein, a series of thiol ligands are comprehensively studied for p-type CQDs, which suggests that, by finely controlling the interaction between the CQDs and thiol ligands during the preparation of p-type CQD solid films, the n-type CQD solid films can be well protected and avoid destruction induced by thiol ligands. The p-type CQD solid film with 4-aminobenzenethiol (ABT) passivating the CQD surface exhibits better optoelectronic properties than the conventional p-type EDT-based CQD solid films, resulting in an improved photovoltaic performance in CQDSCs.

  • Housing environment and early childhood development in sub-Saharan Africa: A cross-sectional analysis.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: PLoS medicine. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1549-1676 .- 1549-1277. ; 18:4
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of the safety and security of environments on early childhood development (ECD) has been under-explored. Although housing might be linked to ECD by affecting a child's health and a parent's ability to provide adequate care, only a few studies have examined this factor. We hypothesized that housing environment is associated with ECD in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).From 92,433 children aged 36 to 59 months who participated in Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) in 20 SSA countries, 88,271 were tested for cognitive and social-emotional development using the Early Childhood Development Index (ECDI) questionnaire and were thus included in this cross-sectional analysis. Children's mean age was 47.2 months, and 49.8% were girls. Children were considered developmentally on track in a certain domain if they failed no more than 1 ECDI item in that domain. In each country, we used conditional logistic regression models to estimate the association between improved housing (housing with finished building materials, improved drinking water, improved sanitation facilities, and sufficient living area) and children's cognitive and social-emotional development, accounting for contextual effects and socioeconomic factors. Estimates from each country were pooled using random-effects meta-analyses. Subgroup analyses were conducted by the child's gender, maternal education, and household wealth quintiles. On-track cognitive development was associated with improved housing (odds ratio [OR] = 1.15, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.24, p < 0.001), improved drinking water (OR = 1.07, 95% CI 1.00 to 1.14, p = 0.046), improved sanitation facilities (OR = 1.15, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.28, p = 0.014), and sufficient living area (OR = 1.06, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.10, p = 0.018). On-track social-emotional development was associated with improved housing only in girls (OR = 1.14, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.25, p = 0.006). The main limitations of this study included the cross-sectional nature of the datasets and the use of the ECDI, which lacks sensitivity to measure ECD outcomes. In this study, we observed that improved housing was associated with on-track cognitive development and with on-track social-emotional development in girls. These findings suggest that housing improvement in SSA may be associated not only with benefits for children's physical health but also with broader aspects of healthy child development.

  • Controlled synthesis of highly stable lead-free bismuth halide perovskite nanocrystals : tructures and photophysics
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: SCIENCE CHINA Materials. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2095-8226 .- 2199-4501. ; 66:5, s. 2079-2089
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, cesium bismuth halide perovskites have emerged as potential substitutes to their counterparts, cesium lead halide perovskites, owing to their low toxicity. However, the photophysics of cesium-bismuth halides nanocrystals (NCs) have not yet been fully rationalized because their structures remain highly debated. The ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption along with other photophysical properties such as the nature and lifetime of the excited states vary considerably across the previous reports. Here, we successfully synthesize pure Cs3BiBr6 and Cs3Bi2Br9 NCs via a modified hot-injection method, where the structure can be easily controlled by tuning the reaction temperature. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of the pure Cs3Bi2Br9 NCs features two characteristic peaks originating from the absorption of the first exciton and second exciton, respectively, which ultimately clarifies the debate in the previous reports. Using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the excited state dynamics of the Cs3Bi2Br9 NCs and reveal that the photoexcited carriers undergo a self-trapping process within 3 ps after excitation. More intriguingly, the Cs3Bi2Br9 NCs prepared by this method show much better photostability than those prepared by the ligand-assisted reprecipitation process. Photodetectors based on these Cs3Bi2Br9 NCs show a sensitive light response, demonstrating the definite potential for breakthrough optoelectronic applications. [Figure not available: see fulltext.].

  • Survival in amoeba-a major selection pressure on the presence of bacterial copper and zinc resistance determinants? Identification of a "copper pathogenicity island"
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-0614 .- 0175-7598. ; 99:14, s. 5817-5824
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The presence of metal resistance determinants in bacteria usually is attributed to geological or anthropogenic metal contamination in different environments or associated with the use of antimicrobial metals in human healthcare or in agriculture. While this is certainly true, we hypothesize that protozoan predation and macrophage killing are also responsible for selection of copper/zinc resistance genes in bacteria. In this review, we outline evidence supporting this hypothesis, as well as highlight the correlation between metal resistance and pathogenicity in bacteria. In addition, we introduce and characterize the "copper pathogenicity island" identified in Escherichia coli and Salmonella strains isolated from copper- and zinc-fed Danish pigs.

  • Highly Stabilized Quantum Dot Ink for Efficient Infrared Light Absorbing Solar Cells
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Advanced Energy Materials. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 1614-6832 .- 1614-6840. ; 9:44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Liquid-state ligand exchange provides an efficient approach to passivate a quantum dot (QD) surface with small binding species and achieve a QD ink toward scalable QD solar cell (QDSC) production. Herein, experimental studies and theoretical simulations are combined to establish the physical principles of QD surface properties induced charge carrier recombination and collection in QDSCs. Ammonium iodide (AI) is used to thoroughly replace the native oleic acid ligand on the PbS QD surface forming a concentrated QD ink, which has high stability of more than 30 d. The ink can be directly applied for the preparation of a thick QD solid film using a single deposition step method and the QD solid film shows better characteristics compared with that of the film prepared with the traditional PbX2 (X = I or Br) post-treated QD ink. Infrared light-absorbing QDSC devices are fabricated using the PbS-AI QD ink and the devices give a higher photovoltaic performance compared with the devices fabricated with the traditional PbS-PbX2 QD ink. The improved photovoltaic performance in PbS-AI-based QDSC is attributed to diminished charge carrier recombination induced by the sub-bandgap traps in QDs. A theoretical simulation is carried out to atomically link the relationship of QDSC device function with the QD surface properties.
