  • Oxygen Ions O+ Energized by Kinetic Alfven Eigenmode During Dipolarizations of Intense Substorms

    • Singly charged oxygen ions, O+, energized by kinetic Alfven wave eigenmode (KAWE) in the plasma sheet boundary layer during dipolarizations of two intense substorms, 10: 07 UT on 31 August 2004 and 18: 24 UT on 14 September 2004, are investigated by Cluster spacecraft in the magnetotail. It is found that after the beginning of the expansion phase of substorms, O+ ions are clearly energized in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field with energy larger than 1 keV in the near-Earth plasma sheet during magnetic dipolarizations. The pitch angle distribution of these energetic O+ ions is significantly different from that of O+ ions with energy less than 1 keV before substorm onset that is in the quasi-parallel direction along the magnetic field. The KAWE with the large perpendicular unipolar electric field, E-z similar to -20 mV/m, significantly accelerates O+ ions in the direction perpendicular to the background magnetic field. We present good evidences that O+ ion origin from the ionosphere along the magnetic field line in the northward lobe can be accelerated in the perpendicular direction during substorm dipolarizations. The change of the move direction of O+ ions is useful for O+ transferring from the lobe into the central plasma sheet in the magnetotail. Thus, KAWE can play an important role in O+ ion transfer process from the lobe into the plasma sheet during intense substorms.

  • High gas tightness ZrO2-added silicate glass sealant with low thermal stress for solid oxide fuel cells

    • A low leakage rate sealant of 10 wt% ZrO2-added CaO–K2O–Na2O–BaO silicate glass for SOFC has been studied. The structure of the sealant is stable at high temperatures with leakage rates less than 10−4 sccm∙cm−1, and no crystal except for ZrO2 is found in XRD analysis after heating at 800 °C for 100 h. ZrO2 is distributed in the glass matrix and plays a supporting role in avoiding over-softening at operating temperature. Good compatibility in both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres between the sealant and SUS430 interconnect was proved by SEM at 750 °C for 100 h. A fully coupled 3D Multiphysics button SOFC is constructed for mechanical analyses. The results show that the increase of ZrO2 in the sealant will decrease the stress and displacement in the SOFC. Besides, the width of the sealant also affects the stress value and distribution. The results show that GZ10 is a competitive sealing material compared with other ZrO2-added sealants.

    • We show that the thylakoid membrane phosphoprotein TMP14 is a novel subunit of plant photosystem I (PSI). Blue native/SDS–PAGE and sucrose gradient fractionation demonstrated the association of the protein exclusively with PSI. We designate the protein PSI-P. The presence of PSI-P subunit in Arabidopsis mutants lacking other PSI subunits was analyzed and suggested a location in the proximity of PSI-L, -H and -O subunits. The PSI-P protein was not differentially phosphorylated in state 1 and state 2.

    • A noncovalent assembly of a pyridyl-functionalized hydrogenase active-site model complex and zinc tetraphenylporphyrin has been obtained and characterized. Upon light irradiation, fluorescence quenching by electron transfer was observed from the singlet excited state of the porphyrin to the diiron center, and the mechanism was verified by fluorescence lifetime and transient absorption spectroscopic measurements. In contrast to molecular dyads linked by covalent bonds, the assembled system was designed to avoid charge recombination via complex dissociation after photo-induced electron transfer. Visible light-driven hydrogen generation was observed from this self-assembled system. The assembling strategy employed in this study has the potential to be used for any other hydrogenase models in the future.

  • Osthole Ameliorates Renal Fibrosis in Mice by Suppressing Fibroblast Activation and Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition

    • Renal fibrosis is a common pathway of virtually all progressive kidney diseases. Osthole (OST, 7-Methoxy-8-(3-methylbut-2-enyl)-2-chromenone), a derivative of coumarin mainly found in plants of the Apiaceae family, has shown inhibitory effects on inflammation, oxidative stress, fibrosis and tumor progression. The present study investigated whether OST mediates its effect via suppressing fibroblast activation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO)-induced renal fibrosis in mice. Herein, we found that OST inhibited fibroblast activation in a dose-dependent manner by inhibiting the transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF beta 1)-Smad pathway. OST also blocked fibroblast proliferation by reducing DNA synthesis and downregulating the expressions of proliferation- and cell cycle-related proteins including proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), CyclinD1 and p21 Waf1/Cip1. Meanwhile, in the murine model of renal interstitial fibrosis induced by UUO, myofibroblast activation with increased expression of alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA) and proliferation were attenuated by OST treatment. Additionally, we provided in vivo evidence suggesting that OST repressed EMT with preserved E-cadherin and reduced Vimentin expression in obstructed kidney. UUO injury-induced upregulation of EMT-related transcription factors, Snail family transcriptional repressor-1(Snail 1) and Twist family basic helix-loop-helix (BHLH) transcription factor (Twist) as well as elevated G2/M arrest of tubular epithelial cell, were rescued by OST treatment. Further, OST treatment reversed aberrant expression of TGF beta 1-Smad signaling pathway, increased level of proinflammatory cytokines and NF-kappaB (NF-kappa B) activation in kidneys with obstructive nephropathy. Taken together, these findings suggest that OST hinder renal fibrosis in UUO mouse mainly through inhibition of fibroblast activation and EMT.
