  • Disentangling Transient Charge Density and Metal-Ligand Covalency in Photoexcited Ferricyanide with Femtosecond Resonant Inelastic Soft X-ray Scattering
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1948-7185. ; 9:12, s. 3538-3543
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soft X-ray spectroscopies are ideal probes of the local valence electronic structure of photocatalytically active metal sites. Here, we apply the selectivity of time resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at the iron L-edge to the transient charge distribution of an optically excited charge-transfer state in aqueous ferricyanide. Through comparison to steady-state spectra and quantum chemical calculations, the coupled effects of valence-shell closing and ligand-hole creation are experimentally and theoretically disentangled and described in terms of orbital occupancy, metal-ligand covalency, and ligand field splitting, thereby extending established steady-state concepts to the excited-state domain. pi-Back-donation is found to be mainly determined by the metal site occupation, whereas the ligand hole instead influences sigma-donation. Our results demonstrate how ultrafast resonant inelastic X-ray scattering can help characterize local charge distributions around catalytic metal centers in short-lived charge-transfer excited states, as a step toward future rationalization and tailoring of photocatalytic capabilities of transition-metal complexes.

  • Ligand manipulation of charge transfer excited state relaxation and spin crossover in [Fe(2,2'-bipyridine)2(CN)2]
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Structural Dynamics. - : AIP Publishing. - 2329-7778. ; 4:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have used femtosecond resolution UV-visible and Kβ x-ray emission spectroscopy to characterize the electronic excited state dynamics of [Fe(bpy)2(CN)2], where bpy=2,20-bipyridine, initiated by metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excitation. The excited-state absorption in the transient UV-visible spectra, associated with the 2,20-bipyridine radical anion, provides a robust marker for the MLCT excited state, while the transient Kβ x-ray emission spectra provide a clear measure of intermediate and high spin metal-centered excited states. From these measurements, we conclude that the MLCT state of [Fe(bpy)2(CN)2] undergoes ultrafast spin crossover to a metalcentered quintet excited state through a short lived metal-centered triplet transient species. These measurements of [Fe(bpy)2(CN)2] complement prior measurement performed on [Fe(bpy)3]2+ and [Fe(bpy)(CN)4]2- in dimethylsulfoxide solution and help complete the chemical series [Fe(bpy)N(CN)6-2N]2N-4, whereN=1-3. The measurements confirm that simple ligand modifications can significantly change the relaxation pathways and excited state lifetimes and support the further investigation of light harvesting and photocatalytic applications of 3d transition metal complexes.

  • A setup for resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering on liquids at free electron laser light sources
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 1089-7623 .- 0034-6748. ; 83:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a flexible and compact experimental setup that combines an in vacuum liquid jet with an x-ray emission spectrometer to enable static and femtosecond time-resolved resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements from liquids at free electron laser (FEL) light sources. We demonstrate the feasibility of this type of experiments with the measurements performed at the Linac Coherent Light Source FEL facility. At the FEL we observed changes in the RIXS spectra at high peak fluences which currently sets a limit to maximum attainable count rate at FELs. The setup presented here opens up new possibilities to study the structure and dynamics in liquids. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4772685]

  • Anti-Stokes resonant x-ray Raman scattering for atom specific and excited state selective dynamics
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1367-2630. ; 18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultrafast electronic and structural dynamics of matter govern rate and selectivity of chemical reactions, as well as phase transitions and efficient switching in functional materials. Since x-rays determine electronic and structural properties with elemental, chemical, orbital and magnetic selectivity, short pulse x-ray sources have become central enablers of ultrafast science. Despite of these strengths, ultrafast x-rays have been poor at picking up excited state moieties from the unexcited ones. With time-resolved anti-Stokes resonant x-ray Raman scattering (AS-RXRS) performed at the LCLS, and ab initio theory we establish background free excited state selectivity in addition to the elemental, chemical, orbital and magnetic selectivity of x-rays. This unparalleled selectivity extracts low concentration excited state species along the pathway of photo induced ligand exchange of Fe(CO)(5) in ethanol. Conceptually a full theoretical treatment of all accessible insights to excited state dynamics with AS-RXRS with transform-limited x-ray pulses is given-which will be covered experimentally by upcoming transform-limited x-ray sources.

  • Viewing the Valence Electronic Structure of Ferric and Ferrous Hexacyanide in Solution from the Fe and Cyanide Perspectives
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry B. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-6106 .- 1520-5207. ; 120:29, s. 7182-7194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The valence-excited states of ferric and ferrous hexacyanide ions in aqueous solution were mapped by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Fe L-2,L-3 and N K edges. Probing of both the central Fe and the ligand N atoms enabled identification of the metal-and ligand-centered excited states, as well as ligand-to-metal and metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited states. Ab initio calculations utilizing the RASPT2 method were used to simulate the Fe L-2,L-3-edge RIXS spectra and enabled quantification of the covalencies of both occupied and empty orbitals of pi and sigma symmetry. We found that pi back-donation in the ferric complex is smaller than that in the ferrous complex. This is evidenced by the relative amounts of Fe 3d character in the nominally 2 pi CN- molecular orbital of 7% and 9% in ferric and ferrous hexacyanide, respectively. Utilizing the direct sensitivity of Fe L-3-edge RIXS to the Fe 3d character in the occupied molecular orbitals, we also found that the donation interactions are dominated by sigma bonding. The latter was found to be stronger in the ferric complex, with an Fe 3d contribution to the nominally 5 sigma CN- molecular orbitals of 29% compared to 20% in the ferrous complex. These results are consistent with the notion that a higher charge at the central metal atom increases donation and decreases back-donation.

  • Effect of disordered nanoporosity on electrical and thermal properties of layered Ca3Co4O9 films
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 120:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Independently controlling electronic and thermal transport in solids is a challenge, because these properties are coupled. Here, we show that disordered nanoporosity in Ca3Co4O9 thin films can decrease the thermal conductivity without significantly hampering electronic transport. Scanning thermal microscopy was used to determine the out-of-plane thermal conductivity and estimate the in-plane values. Nanoporous Ca3Co4O9 films exhibit a thermal conductivity of 0.82 W m(-1) K-1, which is nearly twofold lower than that obtained from nonporous Ca3Co4O9 films. Nanoporous Ca3Co4O9 exhibit a room-temperature electrical resistivity of 4 m omega cm, which is comparable to polycrystalline Ca3Co4O9 and twice that reported for single-crystal Ca3Co4O9. Our results suggest that controlling nanoporosity and their degree of disorder can offer a means of decoupling electrical and thermal properties in materials.

  • Allochroic platinum/carbon nitride with photoactivated ohmic contact for efficient visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier. - 1385-8947 .- 1873-3212. ; 462
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The direct hybridization of Pt and g-C3N4 generally forms a Schottky barrier between the two components, which unavoidably hinders the migration of photogenerated electrons from g-C3N4 to the Pt cocatalyst. Herein, we report the first efficient allochroic Pt/g-C3N4 photocatalyst that can form an ohmic contact through photoconversion of semiconducting g-C3N4 to metalloid, accompanied with the charge carrier storage and photocatalyst color change, which is proved experimentally and theoretically. Through intermittent exposure of Pt/gC3N4 photocatalyst to air for a few minutes during photocatalysis, the photocatalyst shows the highest hydrogen evolution performances. The ohmic contacts greatly promote the electron transfer from the semiconducting gC3N4 to the Pt cocatalyst driven by the built-in electric field. In addition, the mechanism for the photocatalyst deactivation and activation is presented. The compositional tuning of the allochroic g-C3N4 through light irradiation and exposure to air can control over the photocatalytic activity and long-term stability for hydrogen evolution. This report for the first time unveils the deactivation and regeneration mechanisms of SCN.

  • Atomistic characterization of the active-site solvation dynamics of a model photocatalyst
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interactions between the reactive excited state of molecular photocatalysts and surrounding solvent dictate reaction mechanisms and pathways, but are not readily accessible to conventional optical spectroscopic techniques. Here we report an investigation of the structural and solvation dynamics following excitation of a model photocatalytic molecular system [Ir 2 (dimen) 4 ] 2+, where dimen is para-diisocyanomenthane. The time-dependent structural changes in this model photocatalyst, as well as the changes in the solvation shell structure, have been measured with ultrafast diffuse X-ray scattering and simulated with Born-Oppenheimer Molecular Dynamics. Both methods provide direct access to the solute-solvent pair distribution function, enabling the solvation dynamics around the catalytically active iridium sites to be robustly characterized. Our results provide evidence for the coordination of the iridium atoms by the acetonitrile solvent and demonstrate the viability of using diffuse X-ray scattering at free-electron laser sources for studying the dynamics of photocatalysis.
