  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • Redirecting configuration of atomically dispersed selenium catalytic sites for efficient hydrazine oxidation
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Matter. - 2590-2393 .- 2590-2385. ; 7:2, s. 655-667
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the reconstruction of surface sites is crucial for gaining insights into the true active sites and catalytic mechanisms. While extensive research has been conducted on reconstruction behaviors of atomically dispersed metallic catalytic sites, limited attention has been paid to non-metallic ones despite their potential catalytic activity comparable or even superior to their noble-metal counterpart. Herein, we report a carbonaceous, atomically dispersed non-metallic selenium catalyst that displayed exceptional catalytic activity in the hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) in alkaline media, outperforming the noble-metal Pt catalysts. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the pristine SeC4 site pre-adsorbs an ∗OH ligand, followed by HzOR occurring on the other side of the OH–SeC4. Theoretical calculations proposed that the pre-adsorbed ∗OH group pulls electrons from the Se site, resulting in a more positively charged Se and a higher polarity of Se–C bonds, thereby enhancing surface reactivity toward HzO/R.

  • Large-scale planar and spherical light-emitting diodes based on arrays of perovskite quantum wires
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Photonics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1749-4885 .- 1749-4893. ; 16:4, s. 284-290
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Halide perovskites are enticing candidates for highly efficient planar light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with commercial potential in displays and lighting. However, it remains a challenge for conventional solution fabrication processes to fabricate large-scale or non-planar LEDs due to the non-uniformity of perovskite films in conjunction with material stability issues. Here large-area highly uniform arrays of crystalline perovskite quantum wires are grown with emission spectra covering the whole visible range. Photoluminescence quantum yield of up to 92% and 5,644 hours as the time for photoluminescence to degrade down to its 50% of the initial value under ambient conditions are achieved for MAPbBr3 quantum wires. LEDs based on these quantum wires on rigid and flexible planar substrates are fabricated up to a four-inch wafer size and also unique three-dimensional spherical LEDs with outstanding uniformity are reported. The results suggest that the approach developed here can be generalized to other unconventional three-dimensional LEDs in the future.

  • A General Carboxylate-Assisted Approach to Boost the ORR Performance of ZIF-Derived Fe/N/C Catalysts for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - : Wiley. - 1616-301X .- 1616-3028. ; 31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An Fe/N/C catalyst derived from the pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks, for example, a zeolitic-imidazolate-framework-8 (ZIF-8), has been regarded as one of the most promising non-precious metal catalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, its ORR mass activity is still much inferior to that of Pt, partly because of the lack of general and efficient synthetic strategies. Herein, a general carboxylate-assisted strategy that dramatically enhances the ORR mass activity of ZIF-derived Fe/N/C catalysts is reported. The carboxylate is found to promote the formation of Fe/N/C catalysts with denser accessible active sites and entangled carbon nanotubes, as well as a higher mesoporosity. These structural advantages make the carboxylate-assisted Fe/N/C catalysts show a 2-10 fold higher ORR mass activity than the common carboxylate-free one in various cases. When applied in H-2-O-2 PEMFCs, the active acetate-assisted Fe/N/C catalyst generates a peak power density of 1.33 W cm(-2), a new record of peak power density for a H-2-O-2 PEMFC with non-Pt ORR catalysts.

  • Social and moral psychology of COVID-19 across 69 countries
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scientific Data. - : NATURE PORTFOLIO. - 2052-4463. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all domains of human life, including the economic and social fabric of societies. One of the central strategies for managing public health throughout the pandemic has been through persuasive messaging and collective behaviour change. To help scholars better understand the social and moral psychology behind public health behaviour, we present a dataset comprising of 51,404 individuals from 69 countries. This dataset was collected for the International Collaboration on Social & Moral Psychology of COVID-19 project (ICSMP COVID-19). This social science survey invited participants around the world to complete a series of moral and psychological measures and public health attitudes about COVID-19 during an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (between April and June 2020). The survey included seven broad categories of questions: COVID-19 beliefs and compliance behaviours; identity and social attitudes; ideology; health and well-being; moral beliefs and motivation; personality traits; and demographic variables. We report both raw and cleaned data, along with all survey materials, data visualisations, and psychometric evaluations of key variables.

  • Highly selective recovery of rare earth elements from mine wastewater by modifying kaolin with phosphoric acid
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Separation and Purification Technology. - : Elsevier. - 1383-5866 .- 1873-3794. ; 309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from mine wastewater is essential for maintaining rare earth reserves and sustainable application of REEs. In the present study, we prepared a phosphoric acid modified kaolin (P-K) adsorbent by a simple mechanochemical process for the selective recovery of REEs from rare earth wastewater. The impacts of phosphoric acid dosage, milling duration, initial pH, temperature, initial ion concentration, and adsorbent dosage on the selective adsorption of REEs were investigated. The findings demonstrate that the adsorption of REEs by P-K follows pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, and is dominated by chemical adsorption, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 19.82 mg/g at 50 ℃. Additionally, in an original mine wastewater, the recovery rate of REEs can reach more than 90%, whereas the adsorption rates of calcium, magnesium and, ammonia nitrogen (whose concentration is 18 times that of REEs) are nearly zero, indicating that P-K has extremely high selectivity for REEs. Furthermore, the feedstock solution containing 40 mg/L of REEs may be concentrated to 3510 mg/L following enrichment treatment, and 99.9% of the REEs are eluted using a low concentration of hydrochloric acid. The findings illustrate that P-K has a wide range of potential applications in the treatment of rare earth industrial effluents.

  • Protein-coding variants implicate novel genes related to lipid homeostasis contributing to body-fat distribution
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 51:3, s. 452-469
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Body-fat distribution is a risk factor for adverse cardiovascular health consequences. We analyzed the association of body-fat distribution, assessed by waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for body mass index, with 228,985 predicted coding and splice site variants available on exome arrays in up to 344,369 individuals from five major ancestries (discovery) and 132,177 European-ancestry individuals (validation). We identified 15 common (minor allele frequency, MAF >= 5%) and nine low-frequency or rare (MAF < 5%) coding novel variants. Pathway/gene set enrichment analyses identified lipid particle, adiponectin, abnormal white adipose tissue physiology and bone development and morphology as important contributors to fat distribution, while cross-trait associations highlight cardiometabolic traits. In functional follow-up analyses, specifically in Drosophila RNAi-knockdowns, we observed a significant increase in the total body triglyceride levels for two genes (DNAH10 and PLXND1). We implicate novel genes in fat distribution, stressing the importance of interrogating low-frequency and protein-coding variants.

  • Effect of iodine doping on photoelectric properties of perovskite-based MOS devices
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Materials letters (General ed.). - : ELSEVIER. - 0167-577X .- 1873-4979. ; 261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, the PVK based metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitor structures were fabricated and the photoelectric performance of the capacitor was carried out to study the intrinsic electrical characteristic of PVK with iodine doped. The electrical hysteresis of the capacitor after iodine doping becomes larger in the dark state, which indicates that the hysteresis behavior of the PVK is caused by the mobile iodine ions. The photocurrent of iodine-doped PVK is significantly greater than that of undoped PVK under illumination, which suggests that the capacitor has better response to light and the photodetectors efficiency also increase after iodine doping. Our results provide a theoretical basis for the potential application of memory devices such as memristors under dark. Meanwhile, it provides a method to improve photodetector performance by adding an appropriate amount of iodine to the PVK precursor solution. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Rare and low-frequency coding variants alter human adult height
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 542:7640, s. 186-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Height is a highly heritable, classic polygenic trait with approximately 700 common associated variants identified through genome-wide association studies so far. Here, we report 83 height-associated coding variants with lower minor-allele frequencies (in the range of 0.1-4.8%) and effects of up to 2 centimetres per allele (such as those in IHH, STC2, AR and CRISPLD2), greater than ten times the average effect of common variants. In functional follow-up studies, rare height increasing alleles of STC2 (giving an increase of 1-2 centimetres per allele) compromised proteolytic inhibition of PAPP-A and increased cleavage of IGFBP-4 in vitro, resulting in higher bioavailability of insulin-like growth factors. These 83 height-associated variants overlap genes that are mutated in monogenic growth disorders and highlight new biological candidates (such as ADAMTS3, IL11RA and NOX4) and pathways (such as proteoglycan and glycosaminoglycan synthesis) involved in growth. Our results demonstrate that sufficiently large sample sizes can uncover rare and low-frequency variants of moderate-to-large effect associated with polygenic human phenotypes, and that these variants implicate relevant genes and pathways.

  • Hysteresis effects on carrier transport and photoresponse characteristics in hybrid perovskites
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry C. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 2050-7526 .- 2050-7534. ; 8:6, s. 1962-1971
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have recently emerged as promising potential candidate materials in the area of photoelectrics due to their unparalleled optoelectronic features. However, the performance of an optoelectronic device is always affected by the mixed ionic and electronic conducting behavior within perovskites. Herein, the hysteresis effect on carrier mobility and photoresponse characteristics of perovskites were investigated through adding rational additives to the precursor solution. The results show that the perovskite with foreign fullerene derivative (PCBM) additive can suppress hysteresis behavior and increase the mobility by two-fold, while the perovskite with native iodine (I) additive will amplify hysteresis and reduce the mobility by two orders of magnitude at the room temperature compared with that of the pure perovskite. Furthermore, we found that the response characteristics of the photodetectors are strongly affected by the carrier mobility. Capacitance-voltage results confirm the significant change in hysteresis after the introduction of different additives, which explains the changes in mobility and photoresponse time. Our results enlighten the hysteresis effect related to carrier transport and photoresponse characteristics, and provide guidance for the development of reliable, high performance perovskite devices.
