  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • Homojunction and ohmic contact coexisting carbon nitride for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nano Reseach. - : Springer. - 1998-0124 .- 1998-0000. ; 16, s. 8782-8792
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Carbon nitride (CN) has attracted intensive attention as a visible light photocatalyst, but the rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers limits its photocatalytic activity. Herein, we develop a new strategy to construct both homojunction and ohmic junction into CN via selectively introducing metallized CN (MCN), which leads to rapid separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers. The polymerization of urea in the presence of KOH creates CN homojunction with amino and cyano groups. The subsequent molten salt treatment induces a new type of cyano-terminated CN that can be converted to MCN through photodoping, forming homojunction and ohmic contact coexisting CN (HOCN). The formed HOCN photocatalyst exhibits a high photocatalytic H-2 evolution rate of 18.5 mmol.g(-1).h(-1) under visible light irradiation, 45-fold higher than that of bulk CN. This strategy provides a new idea for designing ohmic contact between semiconductor and metal, and realizing efficient photocatalysis by improving charge separation and transfer.

  • Study of the relationship between urbanization and environment in the Jiulong river basin based on coupling coordination degree model
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Environmental Science. - 2296-665X. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rapid urbanization has placed the sustainable development of some watershed ecosystems in jeopardy. In order to achieve sustainable urban development, it is vital to identify the coupling mechanisms between urbanization and the ecological environment quality. This study establishes indicators to evaluate the Jiulong River Basin’s urbanization and ecological environment systems. These are utilized to analyze spatial and temporal changes and build a coupling coordination degree model. This research investigates the level of development coordination between urbanization and the ecological environment quality in the basin. The data sources include nighttime lighting and Landsat data from 2000 to 2020. The findings indicated the following: 1) Urbanization levels in the basin rise annually, and the years 2010–2020 represent a stage of high urbanization growth. In addition, the development levels are spatially heterogeneous, with high levels in the south and low levels in the north. 2) The ecological environment quality category for the basin is generally Excellent; however, many facets of the climate and human activity drastically lowered this grade in 2005. 3) In the basin, there is a basic coordination relationship between urbanization and environmental quality, but the number of cities falling into the moderate imbalance category has grown. 4) Increasing the urbanization level raises the coordination between urbanization and the ecological environment more than improving environmental quality, but antagonistic effects make it necessary to strengthen the protection of the ecological environment alongside economic development. From the viewpoint of counties, this study examines the long-term interactions between the ecological environment and urbanization in Fujian Province, China. Recommendations for balancing urban development and environmental concerns in coastal watersheds are presented, providing references to the fact that the future of this area of China can be sustainable.

  • Printed Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells with the Highest Efficiency of 9.5%
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Advanced Energy Materials. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 1614-6832 .- 1614-6840. ; 8:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current work reports a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.54% achieved with nonfullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) based on PTB7-Th donor and 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2,3-d]-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b]dithiophene) (ITIC) acceptor fabricated by doctor-blade printing, which has the highest efficiency ever reported in printed nonfullerene OSCs. Furthermore, a high PCE of 7.6% is realized in flexible large-area (2.03 cm(2)) indium tin oxide (ITO)-free doctor-bladed nonfullerene OSCs, which is higher than that (5.86%) of the spin-coated counterpart. To understand the mechanism of the performance enhancement with doctor-blade printing, the morphology, crystallinity, charge recombination, and transport of the active layers are investigated. These results suggest that the good performance of the doctor-blade OSCs is attributed to a favorable nanoscale phase separation by incorporating 0.6 vol% of 1,8-diiodooctane that prolongs the dynamic drying time of the doctor-bladed active layer and contributes to the migration of ITIC molecules in the drying process. High PCE obtained in the flexible large-area ITO-free doctor-bladed nonfullerene OSCs indicates the feasibility of doctor-blade printing in large-scale fullerene-free OSC manufacturing. For the first time, the open-circuit voltage is increased by 0.1 V when 1 vol% solvent additive is added, due to the vertical segregation of ITIC molecules during solvent evaporation.

  • Manipulate Micrometer Surface and Nanometer Bulk Phase Separation Structures in the Active Layer of Organic Solar Cells via Synergy of Ultrasonic and High-Pressure Gas Spraying
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 11:11, s. 10777-10784
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For organic solar cells, the vertical and lateral micro-/nanometer-scale structure in the active layer largely determines the device performance. In this work, the surface and bulk domain size of the photoactive layer are successfully manipulated with a facile two-step spraying method, that is, an ultrathin active layer by high-pressure spraying is deliberately stacked on top of the thick active layer by ultrasonic spraying. Thus, the morphology is effectively optimized with the comprehensive study of optical and electrical characteristics, such as photon absorption, exciton dissociation efficiency, and bimolecular recombination. Moreover, the novel method can be used not only in the fullerene system but also in the nonfullerene system, demonstrating the remarkable universality through this synergy method. This work provides an easy and reliable strategy to improve photovoltaic device performance in the industrial large-area spray-coating process.

  • Bamboo-charcoal-loaded graphitic carbon nitride for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International journal of hydrogen energy. - : Elsevier. - 0360-3199 .- 1879-3487. ; 47:6, s. 3733-3740
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Crystalline graphitic carbon nitride is an excellent photocatalyst for hydrogen production due to its non-toxicity, stability, elemental abundance, and visible-light response. Herein, we present a new type of composite photocatalysts, eco-friendly bamboo-charcoal-loaded graphitic carbon nitrides to accelerate the separation of electron-hole pairs. The suitable loading of bamboo charcoal on graphitic carbon nitrides shows an increased specific surface area from 85 to 120 m2 g-1, and excellent visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production activity of 4.1 mmol g-1 h-1, which is 2.3 times higher than that of pristine carbon nitride (1.8 mmol g-1 h-1). Under irradiation, the photogenerated electrons fast migrate from graphitic carbon nitride to bamboo charcoal through an ohmic contact between them, reducing the recombination of electron-hole pairs. This study highlights the effect of carbonaceous material loading on photocatalytic activity of carbon nitrides and opens an avenue to design efficient loaded photocatalysts with natural abundant materials.

  • Allochroic platinum/carbon nitride with photoactivated ohmic contact for efficient visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier. - 1385-8947 .- 1873-3212. ; 462
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The direct hybridization of Pt and g-C3N4 generally forms a Schottky barrier between the two components, which unavoidably hinders the migration of photogenerated electrons from g-C3N4 to the Pt cocatalyst. Herein, we report the first efficient allochroic Pt/g-C3N4 photocatalyst that can form an ohmic contact through photoconversion of semiconducting g-C3N4 to metalloid, accompanied with the charge carrier storage and photocatalyst color change, which is proved experimentally and theoretically. Through intermittent exposure of Pt/gC3N4 photocatalyst to air for a few minutes during photocatalysis, the photocatalyst shows the highest hydrogen evolution performances. The ohmic contacts greatly promote the electron transfer from the semiconducting gC3N4 to the Pt cocatalyst driven by the built-in electric field. In addition, the mechanism for the photocatalyst deactivation and activation is presented. The compositional tuning of the allochroic g-C3N4 through light irradiation and exposure to air can control over the photocatalytic activity and long-term stability for hydrogen evolution. This report for the first time unveils the deactivation and regeneration mechanisms of SCN.

  • Facile fabrication of AgBr/HCCN hybrids with Z-scheme heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 651
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Constructing a Z-scheme heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution for graphitic carbon nitride-based (g-C3N4) composites is challenging because integrating g-C3N4 with other semiconductors, without specific band structure design, typically results in type I or type II heterojunctions. These heterojunctions have lower redox ability and limited enhancement in photocatalysis. Herein, we select highly crystalline carbon nitride (HCCN) as a proof-of-concept substrate. For the first time, we develop a AgBr nanosphere/HCCN composite photocatalyst that features an all -solid -state direct Z-scheme heterojunction for visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The electron transfer mechanism is initially studied from the band structures and Fermi levels of HCCN and AgBr. It is subsequently confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electron microscopy. The close heterojunction contact and the built-in electron field of the Z-scheme heterojunction promote the migration and separation of photogenerated electrons and holes in the composite photocatalyst. Due to the redistribution of charge carriers, the photocatalyst shows superior redox capability and a markedly enhanced hydrogen evolution performance compared to its individual components. Combining all the advantages, AgBr nanosphere/HCCN reached an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 6 % under the illumination of 410 nm, which is 4 times higher than that of the single HCCN component.

  • Graphitic carbon nitride heterojunction photocatalysts for solar hydrogen production
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International journal of hydrogen energy. - : Elsevier. - 0360-3199 .- 1879-3487. ; 46:75, s. 37242-37267
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photocatalytic hydrogen production is considered as an ideal approach to solve global energy crisis and environmental pollution. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has received extensive consideration due to its facile synthesis, stable physicochemical properties, and easy functionalization. However, the pristine g-C3N4 usually shows unsatisfactory photocatalytic activity due to the limited separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. Generally, introducing semiconductors or co-catalysts to construct geC(3)N(4)-based heterojunction photocatalysts is recognized as an effective method to solve this bottleneck. In this review, the advantages and characteristics of various types of geC(3)N(4)-based heterojunction are analyzed. Subsequently, the recent progress of highly efficient geC(3)N(4)-based heterojunction photocatalysts in the field of photocatalytic water splitting is emphatically introduced. Finally, a vision of future perspectives and challenges of geC(3)N(4)-based heterojunction photocatalysts in hydrogen production are presented. Predictably, this timely review will provide valuable reference for the design of efficient heterojunctions towards photocatalytic water splitting and other photoredox reactions.

  • Roll-to-Roll Slot-Die-Printed Polymer Solar Cells by Self-Assembly
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 10:26, s. 22485-22494
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extremely simplified one-step roll-to-roll slot-die-printed flexible indium tin oxide (ITO)-free polymer solar cells (PSCs) are demonstrated based on the ternary blends of electron-donor polymer thieno[3,4-b]thiophene/benzodithiophene, electron-acceptor fullerene [6,6]-phenyl-C-71-butyric acid methyl ester, and electron-extracting polymer poly[(9,9-bis(3-(N,N-dimethylamino)propyl)-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)] (PFN) at room temperature (RT) in ambient air. The flexible ITO-free PSC exhibits a comparable power conversion efficiency (PCE) with the device employing complicated two-step slot-die printing (5.29% vs 5.41%), which indicates that PFN molecules can migrate from the ternary nanocomposite toward the Ag cathode via vertical self-assembly during the one-step slot-die printing process in air. To confirm the migration of PFN, the morphology and elemental analysis as well as charge transport of different active layers are investigated by the in situ transient film drying process, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, contact angle and surface energy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, impedance spectroscopy, transient photovoltage and transient photocurrent, and laser-beam-induced current. Moreover, the good air and mechanical stability of the flexible device with a decent PCE achieved in 1 cm(2) PSCs at RT in air suggests the feasibility of energy-saving and time-saving one-step slot-die printing to large-scale roll-to-roll manufacture in the future.
