    • The Visual Object Tracking Segmentation VOTS2023 challenge is the eleventh annual tracker benchmarking activity of the VOT initiative. This challenge is the first to merge short-term and long-term as well as single-target and multiple-target tracking with segmentation masks as the only target location specification. A new dataset was created; the ground truth has been withheld to prevent overfitting. New performance measures and evaluation protocols have been created along with a new toolkit and an evaluation server. Results of the presented 47 trackers indicate that modern tracking frameworks are well-suited to deal with convergence of short-term and long-term tracking and that multiple and single target tracking can be considered a single problem. A leaderboard, with participating trackers details, the source code, the datasets, and the evaluation kit are publicly available at the challenge website1

    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge VOT2019 is the seventh annual tracker benchmarking activity organized by the VOT initiative. Results of 81 trackers are presented; many are state-of-the-art trackers published at major computer vision conferences or in journals in the recent years. The evaluation included the standard VOT and other popular methodologies for short-term tracking analysis as well as the standard VOT methodology for long-term tracking analysis. The VOT2019 challenge was composed of five challenges focusing on different tracking domains: (i) VOT-ST2019 challenge focused on short-term tracking in RGB, (ii) VOT-RT2019 challenge focused on "real-time" short-term tracking in RGB, (iii) VOT-LT2019 focused on long-term tracking namely coping with target disappearance and reappearance. Two new challenges have been introduced: (iv) VOT-RGBT2019 challenge focused on short-term tracking in RGB and thermal imagery and (v) VOT-RGBD2019 challenge focused on long-term tracking in RGB and depth imagery. The VOT-ST2019, VOT-RT2019 and VOT-LT2019 datasets were refreshed while new datasets were introduced for VOT-RGBT2019 and VOT-RGBD2019. The VOT toolkit has been updated to support both standard short-term, long-term tracking and tracking with multi-channel imagery. Performance of the tested trackers typically by far exceeds standard baselines. The source code for most of the trackers is publicly available from the VOT page. The dataset, the evaluation kit and the results are publicly available at the challenge website(1).

    • Parrotia persica is one of the most notable endemic relict tree species growing in the Hyrcanian forest at the southern Caspian Sea. The recent discovery of sibling species Parrotia subaequalis, occurring in the temperate forests of south-eastern China, offers the opportunity to compare their morphology and ecological preferences and to dig deeper into the paleophytogeographic history of the genus from a perspective. Since pollen morphology of these species would be essential to unravel the origin and evolution of these Arcto-Tertiary species, the present study aimed to investigate whether it is possible to segregate pollen from these two species. Therefore, a detailed combined light- and scanning electron microscopy-based pollen-analysis of each taxon was conducted, the pollen was described, measured, and compared using statistical approaches and principal component analyses to establish unbiased results. The correlation-based principal component analysis achieved for each species shows an overall good superposition of pollen grains measured in equatorial and polar views in the first principal plane, revealing that the P. persica pollen is morphometrically as homogeneous as that of P. subaequalis. Then, the significant difference, mainly driven by lumen density, has been highlighted between the two species. Ultimately, the cross-validation of the resulting two-species linear discriminants classifier shows that based upon this reference dataset, (sub)fossil pollen grain can now be confidently assigned to either of the two species with an 85.8% correct-assignment rate. This opens new doors in the affiliation of fossil Parrotia pollen and suggests that previous pollen records need to be revised.

  • A Non-Conjugated Polymer Acceptor for Efficient and Thermally Stable All-Polymer Solar Cells

    • A non-conjugated polymer acceptor PF1-TS4 was firstly synthesized by embedding a thioalkyl segment in the mainchain, which shows excellent photophysical properties on par with a fully conjugated polymer, with a low optical band gap of 1.58 eV and a high absorption coefficient >105 cm−1, a high LUMO level of −3.89 eV, and suitable crystallinity. Matched with the polymer donor PM6, the PF1-TS4-based all-PSC achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.63 %, which is ≈45 % higher than that of a device based on the small molecule acceptor counterpart IDIC16. Moreover, the PF1-TS4-based all-PSC has good thermal stability with ≈70 % of its initial PCE retained after being stored at 85 °C for 180 h, while the IDIC16-based device only retained ≈50 % of its initial PCE when stored at 85 °C for only 18 h. Our work provides a new strategy to develop efficient polymer acceptor materials by linkage of conjugated units with non-conjugated thioalkyl segments.

  • Effect of Holding Temperature on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of High-Strength Multiphase Steel

    • Isothermal holding following intercritical annealing is usually used in microstructure control, e.g., fractions and stabilities of retained-austenite (RA). Fe-0.22C-2.5Mn-0.47Si-0.41Cr-0.02Nb (mass%) steel is subjected to intercritical annealing and isothermal treatment at 250, 300, 350, and 400 degrees C to elucidate the impact on microstructures and mechanical properties by means of electron microscopy and uniaxial tensile test, respectively. The results show that the isothermal holding temperature is vital for the formed phases, including the morphology, volume fraction, and carbon content of RA in the processed steels. The tensile test results indicate that the mechanical properties including Ultra-tensile strength (UTS), Yield strength (YS), as well as Total Elongation (TEL) are attributed to the synthetic action of all constituents of phase morphology and corresponding fractions, e.g., hard-to-soft phase ratio, morphology and fraction of RA, dispersed precipitates. An excellent combination of strength-ductility of the present multiphase steel has been explained in terms of their specific microstructure.

  • Coordinated alpha and gamma control of muscles and spindles in movement and posture

    • Mounting evidence suggests that both a and gamma motoneurons are active during movement and posture, but how does the central motor system coordinate the alpha-gamma controls in these tasks remains sketchy due to lack of in vivo data. Here a computational model of alpha-gamma control of muscles and spindles was used to investigate a -gamma integration and coordination for movement and posture. The model comprised physiologically realistic spinal circuitry, muscles, proprioceptors, and skeletal biomechanics. In the model, we divided the cortical descending commands into static and dynamic sets, where static commands (alpha(s) and gamma(s)) were for posture maintenance and dynamic commands (alpha(d) and gamma(d)) were responsible for movement. We matched our model to human reaching movement data by straightforward adjustments of descending commands derived from either minimal-jerk trajectories or human EMGs. The matched movement showed smooth reach-to-hold trajectories qualitatively close to human behaviors, and the reproduced EMGs showed the classic tri-phasic patterns. In particular, the function of gamma(d) was to gate the alpha(d) command at the propriospinal neurons (PN) such that antagonistic muscles can accelerate or decelerate the limb with proper timing. Independent control of joint position and stiffness could be achieved by adjusting static commands. Deefferentation in the model indicated that accurate static commands of as and gamma(s) are essential to achieve stable terminal posture precisely, and that the gamma(d) command is as important as the alpha(d) command in controlling antagonistic muscles for desired movements. Deafferentation in the model showed that losing proprioceptive afferents mainly affected the terminal position of movement, similar to the abnormal behaviors observed in human and animals. Our results illustrated that tuning the simple forms of alpha-gamma commands can reproduce a range of human reach-to-hold movements, and it is necessary to coordinate the set of alpha-gamma descending commands for accurate and stable control of movement and posture.

    • GIMMS NDVI database and geo-statistics were used to depict the spatial distribution and temporal stability of NDVI on the Mongolian Plateau. The results demonstrated that: (1) Regions of interest with high NDVI indices were distributed primarily in forested mountainous regions of the east and the north, areas with low NDVI indices were primarily distributed in the Gobi desert regions of the west and the southwest, and areas with moderate NDVI values were mainly distributed in a middle steppe strap from northwest to southeast. (2) The maximum NDVI values maintained for the past 22 years showed little variation. The average NDVI variance coefficient for the 22-year period was 15.2%. (3) NDVI distribution and vegetation cover showed spatial autocorrelations on a global scale. NDVI patterns from the vegetation cover also demonstrated anisotropy; a higher positive spatial correlation was indicated in a NW-SE direction, which suggested that vegetation cover in a NW-SE direction maintained increased integrity, and vegetation assemblage was mainly distributed in the same specific direction. (4) The NDVI spatial distribution was mainly controlled by structural factors, 88.7% of the total spatial variation was influenced by structural and 11.3% by random factors. And the global autocorrelation distance was 1178 km, and the average vegetation patch length (NW-SE) to width (NE-SW) ratio was approximately 2.4:1.0.

  • Selective Dual-Channel Imaging on Cyanostyryl-Modified Azulene Systems with Unimolecularly Tunable Visible-Near Infrared Luminescence

    • Although organic light-emitting molecules have received a growing attention and applicability in modern bioimaging science, the design and control of complex photoluminescent properties in unimolecularly selective imaging remains a challenging topic. Considering that tunable multipathway imaging can be advantagedly connected with treatment processes in therapy, the integration of an azulene and a cyanostyryl moiety into one skeleton is carried out for the generation of in situ stimuli-responsive luminescent materials, with the aim to achieve tunable and effective emissions in distinct channels through smart molecular design on a single-molecular platform. This strategy takes advantage of 1) the Z/E isomerization of the cyanostyryl unit that can vary the push-pull effect of the substitution on azulene, accompanied by altering absorption and emission of individual excited states, and 2) an optimized excited-state regulation for opening a near infrared emissive channel and making up for a controllable dual-pathway luminescent system together with the utilization of visible emission. As exemplified by a demonstration of manipulating the luminescence at the cell level, the materials exhibit a superior application potential for unimolecularly selective imaging, labeling and probing events.
