  • New Method for a Continuous Determination of the Spin Tune in Storage Rings and Implications for Precision Experiments
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 115:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new method to determine the spin tune is described and tested. In an ideal planar magnetic ring, the spin tune-defined as the number of spin precessions per turn-is given by nu(s) = gamma G (gamma is the Lorentz factor, G the gyromagnetic anomaly). At 970 MeV/c, the deuteron spins coherently process at a frequency of approximate to 120 kHz in the Cooler Synchrotron COSY. The spin tune is deduced from the up-down asymmetry of deuteron-carbon scattering. In a time interval of 2.6 s, the spin tune was determined with a precision of the order 10(-8), and to 1 x 10(-10) for a continuous 100 s accelerator cycle. This renders the presented method a new precision tool for accelerator physics; controlling the spin motion of particles to high precision is mandatory, in particular, for the measurement of electric dipole moments of charged particles in a storage ring.

  • How to Reach a Thousand-Second in-Plane Polarization Lifetime with 0.97-GeV/c Deuterons in a Storage Ring
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 117:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We observe a deuteron beam polarization lifetime near 1000 s in the horizontal plane of a magnetic storage ring (COSY). This long spin coherence time is maintained through a combination of beam bunching, electron cooling, sextupole field corrections, and the suppression of collective effects through beam current limits. This record lifetime is required for a storage ring search for an intrinsic electric dipole moment on the deuteron at a statistical sensitivity level approaching 10(-29) e cm.

  • Connection between zero chromaticity and long in-plane polarization lifetime in a magnetic storage ring
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Accelerators and Beams. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9888. ; 21:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we demonstrate the connection between a magnetic storage ring with additional sextupole fields set so that the x and y chromaticities vanish and the maximizing of the lifetime of in-plane polarization (IPP) for a 0.97-GeV/c deuteron beam. The IPP magnitude was measured by continuously monitoring the down-up scattering asymmetry (sensitive to sideways polarization) in an in-beam, carbontarget polarimeter and unfolding the precession of the IPP due to the magnetic anomaly of the deuteron. The optimum operating conditions for a long IPP lifetime were made by scanning the field of the storage ring sextupole magnet families while observing the rate of IPP loss during storage of the beam. The beam was bunched and electron cooled. The IPP losses appear to arise from the change of the orbit circumference, and consequently the particle speed and spin tune, due to the transverse betatron oscillations of individual particles in the beam. The effects of these changes are canceled by an appropriate sextupole field setting.

  • Flat band in disorder-driven non-Hermitian Weyl semimetals
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 97:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the interplay of disorder and band-structure topology in a Weyl semimetal with a tilted conical spectrum around the Weyl points. The spectrum of particles is given by the eigenvalues of a non-Hermitian matrix, which contains contributions from a Weyl Hamiltonian and complex self-energy due to electron elastic scattering on disorder. We find that the tilt-induced matrix structure of the self-energy gives rise to either a flat band or a nodal line segment at the interface of the electron and hole pockets in the bulk band structure of type-II Weyl semimetals depending on the Weyl cone inclination. For the tilt in a single direction in momentum space, each Weyl point expands into a flat band lying on the plane, which is transverse to the direction of the tilt. The spectrum of the flat band is fully imaginary and is separated from the in-plane dispersive part of the spectrum by the "exceptional nodal ring" where the matrix of the Green's function in momentum-frequency space is defective. The tilt in two directions might shrink a flat band into a nodal line segment with "exceptional edge points." We discuss the connection to the non-Hermitian topological theory.

  • Superconductivity in type-II Weyl semimetals
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 95:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study superconductivity in a Weyl semimetal with a tilted dispersion around two Weyl points of opposite chirality. In the absence of any tilt, the state with zero momentum pairing between two Fermi sheets enclosing each Weyl point has four point nodes in the superconducting gap function. Moreover, the surface of the superconductor hosts Fermi arc states and Majorana flat bands. We show that a quantum phase transition occurs at a critical value of the tilt, at which two gap nodes disappear by merging at the center of the first Brillouin zone, or by escaping at its edges, depending on the direction of the tilt. The region in the momentum space that the Majorana flat band occupies is found to increase as the tilt parameter is made larger. Additionally, the superconducting critical temperature and electronic specific heat can be enhanced in the vicinity of the quantum phase transition due to the singularity in the electronic density of states.

  • Deep optical imaging of the gamma-ray pulsar J1048-5832 with the VLT
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 552, s. A127-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context. PSR J1048-5832 is a young radio-pulsar that has recently been detected in gamma-rays with Fermi, and also in X-rays with Chandra and XMM-Newton. It powers a compact pulsar wind nebula visible in X-rays and is in many ways similar to the Vela pulsar. Aims. We present deep optical observations made with the ESO Very Large Telescope to search for optical counterparts of the pulsar and its nebula and to explore their multi-wavelength emission properties. Methods. The data were obtained in the V and R bands and were compared with archival data in other spectral domains. Results. We do not detect the pulsar in the optical and derive informative upper limits of R greater than or similar to 28(.)(m) 1 and V less than or similar to 28(.)(m) 4 for its brightness. Using a red-clump star method, we estimate an interstellar extinction towards the pulsar of A(V) approximate to 2 mag, which is consistent with the absorbing column density derived from X-rays. The respective distance agrees with the dispersion measure distance. We reanalysed the Chandra X-ray data and compared the dereddened upper limits with the unabsorbed X-ray spectrum of the pulsar. We find that regarding its optical-X-ray spectral properties this gamma-ray pulsar is not distinct from other pulsars detected in both ranges. However, like the Vela pulsar, it is very inefficient in the optical and X-rays. Among a dozen optical sources overlapping with the pulsar X-ray nebula we find one with V approximate to 26(.)(m)9 and R approximate to 26. m 3, whose colour is slightly bluer than that of the field stars and is consistent with the peculiar colours typical for pulsar nebula features. It positionally coincides with a relatively bright feature of the pulsar X-ray nebula, resembling the Crab wisp and is located in similar to 2 '' from the pulsar. We suggest this source as a counterpart candidate to the feature. Conclusions. Based on the substantial interstellar extinction towards the pulsar and its optical inefficiency, additional optical studies should be carried out at longer wavelengths.

  • Anomalous Nernst and thermal Hall effects in tilted Weyl semimetals
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 96:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the anomalous Nernst and thermal Hall effects in a linearized low-energy model of a tilted Weyl semimetal, with two Weyl nodes separated in momentum space. For inversion symmetric tilt, we give analytic expressions in two opposite limits: For a small tilt, corresponding to a type-I Weyl semimetal, the Nernst conductivity is finite and independent of the Fermi level; for a large tilt, corresponding to a type-II Weyl semimetal, it acquires a contribution depending logarithmically on the Fermi energy. This result is in a sharp contrast to the nontilted case, where the Nernst response is known to be zero in the linear model. The thermal Hall conductivity similarly acquires Fermi surface contributions, which add to the Fermi level-independent, zero-tilt result, and is suppressed as one over the tilt parameter at half filling in the type-II phase. In the case of inversion-breaking tilt, with the tilting vector of equal modulus in the two Weyl cones, all Fermi surface contributions to both anomalous responses cancel out, resulting in zero Nernst conductivity. We discuss two possible experimental setups, representing open and closed thermoelectric circuits.

  • RKKY interaction on the surface of three-dimensional Dirac semimetals
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 99:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the RKKY interaction between two magnetic impurities located on the surface of a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal with two Dirac nodes in the band structure. By taking into account both bulk and surface contributions to the exchange interaction between the localized spins, we demonstrate that the surface contribution in general dominates the bulk one at distances larger than the inverse node separation due to a weaker power-law decay. We find a strong anisotropy of the surface term with respect to the spins being aligned along the node separation axis or perpendicular to it. In the many impurity dilute regime, this implies formation of quasi-one-dimensional magnetic stripes orthogonal to the node axis. We also discuss the effects of a surface spin-mixing term coupling electrons from spin-degenerate Fermi arcs.

  • Spectral evolution and polarization of variable structures in the pulsar wind nebula of PSR B0540-69.3
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 413:1, s. 611-627
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present high spatial resolution optical imaging and polarization observations of the PSR B0540-69.3 and its highly dynamical pulsar wind nebula (PWN) performed with Hubble Space Telescope, and compare them with X-ray data obtained with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. In particular, we have studied the bright region south-west of the pulsar where a bright 'blob' is seen in 1999. In a recent paper by De Luca et al. it was argued that the 'blob' moves away from the pulsar at high speed. We show that it may instead be a result of local energy deposition around 1999, and that the emission from this then faded away rather than moved outward. Polarization data from 2007 show that the polarization properties show dramatic spatial variations at the 1999 blob position arguing for a local process. Several other positions along the pulsar-'blob' orientation show similar changes in polarization, indicating previous recent local energy depositions. In X-rays, the spectrum steepens away from the 'blob' position, faster orthogonal to the pulsar-'blob' direction than along this axis of orientation. This could indicate that the pulsar-'blob' orientation is an axis along where energy in the PWN is mainly injected, and that this is then mediated to the filaments in the PWN by shocks. We highlight this by constructing an [S ii]-to-[O iii]-ratio map, and comparing this to optical continuum and X-ray emission maps. We argue, through modelling, that the high [S ii]/[O iii] ratio is not due to time-dependent photoionization caused by possible rapid X-ray emission variations in the 'blob' region. We have also created a multiwavelength energy spectrum for the 'blob' position showing that one can, to within 2 Sigma, connect the optical and X-ray emission by a single power law. The slope of that power law (defined from ) would be alpha(nu) = 0.74 +/- 0.03, which is marginally different from the X-ray spectral slope alone with alpha(nu) = 0.65 +/- 0.03. A single power law for most of the PWN is, however, not be possible. We obtain best power-law fits for the X-ray spectrum if we include 'extra' oxygen, in addition to the oxygen column density in the interstellar gas of the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Milky Way. This oxygen is most naturally explained by the oxygen-rich ejecta of the supernova remnant. The oxygen needed likely places the progenitor mass in the 20-25 M(circle dot) range, i.e. in the upper mass range for progenitors of Type IIP supernovae.
