    • To investigate whether the Observer Scale of the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS) can serve as a generic measure for scar quality across different scar types. A collection of POSAS scores derived from several clinical trials on burn (n = 404), linear (n = 384), and keloidal scars (n = 282) was analyzed using the partial credit model of the Rasch analysis package RUMM2030. Differential item functioning (DIF) was observed for the Observer Scale of the POSAS between the three scar types for the items pliability, thickness, and surface area, which could be solved by item splitting. The items pigmentation and thickness showed disordered thresholds, considerable misfit, and unpredictability. Users of the Observer Scale of the POSAS must be aware that the raw scores obtained from burn, linear, and keloidal scars cannot be compared without the scar-specific DIF adjustment of the items pliability, thickness, and surface area.

  • Can bryophyte groups increase functional resolution in tundra ecosystems?

    • The relative contribution of bryophytes to plant diversity, primary productivity, and ecosystem functioning increases towards colder climates. Bryophytes respond to environmental changes at the species level, but because bryophyte species are relatively difficult to identify, they are often lumped into one functional group. Consequently, bryophyte function remains poorly resolved. Here, we explore how higher resolution of bryophyte functional diversity can be encouraged and implemented in tundra ecological studies. We briefly review previous bryophyte functional classifications and the roles of bryophytes in tundra ecosystems and their susceptibility to environmental change. Based on shoot morphology and colony organization, we then propose twelve easily distinguishable bryophyte functional groups. To illustrate how bryophyte functional groups can help elucidate variation in bryophyte effects and responses, we compiled existing data on water holding capacity, a key bryophyte trait. Although plant functional groups can mask potentially high interspecific and intraspecific variability, we found better separation of bryophyte functional group means compared with previous grouping systems regarding water holding capacity. This suggests that our bryophyte functional groups truly represent variation in the functional roles of bryophytes in tundra ecosystems. Lastly, we provide recommendations to improve the monitoring of bryophyte community changes in tundra study sites.

    • Bryophytes are a diverse group of organisms with unique properties, yet they are severelyunderrepresented in plant trait databases. Building on the recently published European Red List ofbryophytes and previous trait compilations, we present the Bryophytes of Europe Traits (BET) dataset,including biological traits such as those related to life history, growth habit, sexual and vegetativereproduction, ecological traits such as indicator values, substrate and habitat, and bioclimatic variablesbased on the species’ European range. The dataset includes values for 65 traits and 25 bioclimaticvariables, containing more than 135 000 trait values with a completeness of 82.7% on average. Thedataset will enable future studies in bryophyte biology, ecology and conservation and may help toanswer fundamental questions in bryology.
