  • Encountering Proportional Reasoning During a Single Algebra Lesson: A Microgenetic Analysis

    • This case study explores how 12-13-year-old students encounter proportional reasoning while working with geometric patterning tasks using concrete materials. The focus is on the students’ use of spontaneous concepts when first dealing with such patterns in the context of collaborative work. Based on video recordings of a single lesson, a microgenetic analysis was performed to identify students’ learning trajectories, starting with students familiarizing themselves with pattern structure, followed by engagement in proportional reasoning, and ending with students perceiving a new technique to handle a situation where proportional reasoning did not suffice. While some student groups were able to move along the whole trajectory, most groups, when facing challenges, regressed to simpler techniques. The results provide new insights into students’ learning trajectories, which can be used to support students’ progress in the context of student-teacher interaction.

  • Combining Compositionality and Pagerank for the Identification of Semantic Relations between Biomedical Words

    • The acquisition of semantic resources and relations is an important task for several applications, such as query expansion, information retrieval and extraction, machine translation. However, their validity should also be computed and indicated, especially for automatic systems and applications. We exploit the compositionality based methods for the acquisition of synonymy relations and of indicators of these synonyms. We then apply pagerank-derived algorithm to the obtained semantic graph in order to filter out the acquired synonyms. Evaluation performed with two independent experts indicates that the quality of synonyms is systematically improved by 10 to 15% after their filtering.

    • As n-ary operations, generalizing Lie and Poisson algebras, arise in many different physical contexts, it is interesting to study general ways of constructing explicit realizations of such multilinear structures. Generically, they describe the dynamics of a physical system, and there is a need of understanding their quantization. Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras provide a framework that might be an appropriate setting in which n-Lie algebras (n-ary Nambu-Lie algebras) can be deformed, and their quantization studied. We present a procedure to construct (n + 1)-ary Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras from n-ary Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras equipped with a generalized trace function. It turns out that the implications of the compatibility conditions, that are necessary for this construction, can be understood in terms of the kernel of the trace function and the range of the twisting maps. Furthermore, we investigate the possibility of defining (n + k)-Lie algebras from n-Lie algebras and a k-form satisfying certain conditions. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics.     • This is a study of morphisms in the category of finite-dimensional absolute valued algebras whose codomains have dimension four. We begin by citing and transferring a classification of an equivalent category. Thereafter, we give a complete description of morphisms from one-dimensional algebras, partly via solutions of real polynomials, and a complete, explicit description of morphisms from two-dimensional algebras. We then give an account of the reducibility of the morphisms, and for the morphisms from two-dimensional algebras we describe the orbits under the actions of the automorphism groups involved. Parts of these descriptions rely on a suitable choice of a cross-section of four-dimensional absolute valued algebras, and we thus end by providing an explicit means of transferring these results to algebras outside this cross-section.

    • An absolute valued algebra is a non-zero real algebra that is equipped with a multiplicative norm. We classify all finite dimensional absolute valued algebras having a non-zero central idempotent or a one-sided unity, up to algebra isomorphism. This completes earlier results of Ramírez Álvarez and Rochdi which, in our self-contained presentation, are recovered from the wider context of composition k-algebras with an LR-bijective idempotent.

  • Effective Domains and Admissible Domain Representations

    • This thesis consists of four papers in domain theory and a summary. The first two papers deal with the problem of defining effectivity for continuous cpos. The third and fourth paper present the new notion of an admissible domain representation, where a domain representation D of a space X is λ-admissible if, in principle, all other λ-based domain representations E of X can be reduced to X via a continuous function from E to D. In Paper I we define a cartesian closed category of effective bifinite domains. We also investigate the method of inducing effectivity onto continuous cpos via projection pairs, resulting in a cartesian closed category of projections of effective bifinite domains. In Paper II we introduce the notion of an almost algebraic basis for a continuous cpo, showing that there is a natural cartesian closed category of effective consistently complete continuous cpos with almost algebraic bases. We also generalise the notion of a complete set, used in Paper I to define the bifinite domains, and investigate what closure results that can be obtained. In Paper III we consider admissible domain representations of topological spaces. We present a characterisation theorem of exactly when a topological space has a λ-admissible and κ-based domain representation. We also show that there is a natural cartesian closed category of countably based and countably admissible domain representations. In Paper IV we consider admissible domain representations of convergence spaces, where a convergence space is a set X together with a convergence relation between nets on X and elements of X. We study in particular the new notion of weak κ-convergence spaces, which roughly means that the convergence relation satisfies a generalisation of the Kuratowski limit space axioms to cardinality κ. We show that the category of weak κ-convergence spaces is cartesian closed. We also show that the category of weak κ-convergence spaces that have a dense, λ-admissible, κ-continuous and α-based consistently complete domain representation is cartesian closed when α ≤ λ ≥ κ. As natural corollaries we obtain corresponding results for the associated category of weak convergence spaces.

  • Expedited analytical hierarchical process for multicriteria decision making

    • In this study, a procedure to overcome analytical hierarchical process (AHP) limitations was developed and tested, and a tool created via pairwise comparison chart and weighted sum method hybridization was introduced. In addition, a multicriteria decision-making software was selected to validate the constructed hybrid decision-making tool. The software was formulated based on an established decision-making technique. Data for the comparison analysis were obtained from an ongoing research, and output from the comparison analysis provided evidence for the accuracy of the constructed tool. The proposed hybridized method aligned with AHP reasoning but demonstrated a faster process; hence, it was called ‘expedited AHP’.
