  • Kinematic approach to mixed state geometric phase in nonunitary evolution
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 93:8, s. 080405-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A kinematic approach to the geometric phase for mixed quantal states in nonunitary evolution is proposed. This phase is manifestly gauge invariant and can be experimentally tested in interferometry. It leads to well-known results when the evolution is unitary.

  • Carrier-mediated antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling in diluted magnetic semiconductor multilayers Ga1-xMnxAs/GaAs:Be
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 101:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the antiferromagnetic (AFM) interlayer exchange coupling between Ga0.97Mn0.03As ferromagnetic semiconductor layers separated by Be-doped GaAs spacers. Polarized neutron reflectivity reveals a characteristic splitting at the wave vector corresponding to twice the multilayer period, indicating that the coupling between the ferromagnetic layers is AFM. When the applied field is increased to above the saturation field, this AFM coupling is suppressed. This behavior is not observed when the spacers are undoped, suggesting that the observed AFM coupling is mediated by doped charge carriers. © 2008 The American Physical Society.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 76, s. 4136-4139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The N2 1sB 2 Xd dispersed fluorescence from photon excited N2 molecules has been measured in the 19–34 eV excitation range, where our theory predicts the existence of non-Rydberg doubly excited resonances which autoionize in the sub-fs regime into the N2 1 B2S1u ionic state. The experimentally deduced vibrational branching ratios sy0 1dysy0 0d revealed five prominent features, four of which could be identified as such doubly excited resonances based on the lowest order of the many-body perturbation theory. • Stable multidomain structures formed in the process of magnetization reversal in GaMnAs ferromagnetic semiconductor thin films
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 98:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The process of magnetization reversal in ferromagnetic Ga(1-x)MnxAs epilayers has been systematically investigated using the planar Hall effect (PHE). Interestingly, we have observed a pronounced asymmetry in the PHE hysteresis when the range of the field scan is restricted to fields below the final magnetization transition. The observed behavior indicates that (a)A multidomain structures are formed as M undergoes a reorientation, (b) the domain landscape formed in this way remains stable even after the magnetic field is switched off, and (c) the reorientation of magnetization directions corresponding to the transition points in PHE takes place separately within each domain. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

  • Search for Dark Matter Produced in Association with a Higgs Boson Decaying to b b Using 36 fb-1 of pp Collisions at s =13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 119:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several extensions of the standard model predict associated production of dark-matter particles with a Higgs boson. Such processes are searched for in final states with missing transverse momentum and a Higgs boson decaying to a bb pair with the ATLAS detector using 36.1 fb-1 of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC. The observed data are in agreement with the standard model predictions and limits are placed on the associated production of dark-matter particles and a Higgs boson. © 2017 CERN, for the ATLAS Collaboration. • Dijet Resonance Search with Weak Supervision Using s =13 TeV pp Collisions in the ATLAS Detector
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 125:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This Letter describes a search for narrowly resonant new physics using a machine-learning anomaly detection procedure that does not rely on signal simulations for developing the analysis selection. Weakly supervised learning is used to train classifiers directly on data to enhance potential signals. The targeted topology is dijet events and the features used for machine learning are the masses of the two jets. The resulting analysis is essentially a three-dimensional search A→BC, for mA∼O(TeV), mB,mC∼O(100 GeV) and B, C are reconstructed as large-radius jets, without paying a penalty associated with a large trials factor in the scan of the masses of the two jets. The full run 2 s=13 TeV pp collision dataset of 139 fb-1 recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used for the search. There is no significant evidence of a localized excess in the dijet invariant mass spectrum between 1.8 and 8.2 TeV. Cross-section limits for narrow-width A, B, and C particles vary with mA, mB, and mC. For example, when mA=3 TeV and mBâ200 GeV, a production cross section between 1 and 5 fb is excluded at 95% confidence level, depending on mC. For certain masses, these limits are up to 10 times more sensitive than those obtained by the inclusive dijet search. These results are complementary to the dedicated searches for the case that B and C are standard model bosons. © 2020 CERN.

  • Evidence for the Higgs Boson Decay to a Z Boson and a Photon at the LHC
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 132:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first evidence for the Higgs boson decay to a Z boson and a photon is presented, with a statistical significance of 3.4 standard deviations. The result is derived from a combined analysis of the searches performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations with proton-proton collision datasets collected at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) from 2015 to 2018. These correspond to integrated luminosities of around 140  fb−1 for each experiment, at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The measured signal yield is 2.2±0.7 times the standard model prediction, and agrees with the theoretical expectation within 1.9 standard deviations.

  • Longitudinal Flow Decorrelations in Xe plus Xe Collisions at √sNN=5.44 TeV with the ATLAS Detector
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 126:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first measurement of longitudinal decorrelations of harmonic flow amplitudes v(n) for n = 2-4 in Xe + Xe collisions at root s(NN) = 5.44 TeV is obtained using 3 mu b(-1) of data with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The decorrelation signal for v(3) and v(4) is found to be nearly independent of collision centrality and transverse momentum (p(T)) requirements on fmal-state particles, but for v(2) a strong centrality and p(T) dependence is seen. When compared with the results from Pb + Pb collisions at. root s(NN) = 5.02 TcV, the longitudinal decorrelation signal in midcentral Xe + Xe collisions is found to be larger for v(2), but smaller for v(3). Current hydrodynamic models reproduce the ratios of the v(n) measured in Xe + Xe collisions to those in Pb + Pb collisions but fail to describe the magnitudes and trends of the ratios of longitudinal flow decorrelations between Xe + Xe and Pb + Pb. The results on the system-size dependence provide new insights and an important lever arm to separate effects of the longitudinal structure of the initial state from other early and late time effects in heavy-ion collisions.

  • Measurement of Azimuthal Anisotropy of Muons from Charm and Bottom Hadrons in pp Collisions at s =13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 124:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The elliptic flow of muons from the decay of charm and bottom hadrons is measured in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 150 pb-1 recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The muons from heavy-flavor decay are separated from light-hadron decay muons using momentum imbalance between the tracking and muon spectrometers. The heavy-flavor decay muons are further separated into those from charm decay and those from bottom decay using the distance-of-closest-approach to the collision vertex. The measurement is performed for muons in the transverse momentum range 4-7 GeV and pseudorapidity range |η| < 2.4. A significant nonzero elliptic anisotropy coefficient v2 is observed for muons from charm decays, while the v2 value for muons from bottom decays is consistent with zero within uncertainties.

  • Measurement of the Centrality Dependence of the Dijet Yield in Formula Presented Collisions at Formula Presented with the ATLAS Detector
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 132:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using Formula Presented of Formula Presented data collected at Formula Presented in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the Formula Presented impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, Formula Presented, is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The Formula Presented shows a scaling with the Bjorken Formula Presented of the parton originating from the proton, Formula Presented, while no such trend is observed as a function of Formula Presented. This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in Formula Presented collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to Formula Presented and Formula Presented. © 2024 CERN, for the ATLAS Collaboration.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 132:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165  nb−1 of p+Pb data collected at √sNN=8.16  TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the p+Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, RCP, is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The RCP shows a scaling with the Bjorken x of the parton originating from the proton, xp, while no such trend is observed as a function of xPb. This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in p+Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to xp∼10−3 and xPb∼4×10−4.

  • Measurement of the Lund Jet Plane Using Charged Particles in 13 TeV Proton-Proton Collisions with the ATLAS Detector
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 124:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The prevalence of hadronic jets at the LHC requires that a deep understanding of jet formation and structure is achieved in order to reach the highest levels of experimental and theoretical precision. There have been many measurements of jet substructure at the LHC and previous colliders, but the targeted observables mix physical effects from various origins. Based on a recent proposal to factorize physical effects, this Letter presents a double-differential cross-section measurement of the Lund jet plane using 139 fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector using jets with transverse momentum above 675 GeV. The measurement uses charged particles to achieve a fine angular resolution and is corrected for acceptance and detector effects. Several parton shower Monte Carlo models are compared with the data. No single model is found to be in agreement with the measured data across the entire plane.

  • Measurement of the Sensitivity of Two-Particle Correlations in pp Collisions to the Presence of Hard Scatterings
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 131:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A key open question in the study of multiparticle production in high-energy pp collisions is the relationship between the “ridge”—i.e., the observed azimuthal correlations between particles in the underlying event that extend over all rapidities—and hard or semihard scattering processes. In particular, it is not known whether jets or their soft fragments are correlated with particles in the underlying event. To address this question, two-particle correlations are measured in pp collisions at √s=13  TeV using data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 15.8  pb−1, in two different configurations. In the first case, charged particles associated with jets are excluded from the correlation analysis, while in the second case, correlations are measured between particles within jets and charged particles from the underlying event. Second-order flow coefficients, v2, are presented as a function of event multiplicity and transverse momentum. These measurements show that excluding particles associated with jets does not affect the measured correlations. Moreover, particles associated with jets do not exhibit any significant azimuthal correlations with the underlying event, ruling out hard processes contributing to the ridge.

  • Measurement of the WW cross section in sqrt(s) = 7 TeV pp collisions with ATLAS
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This Letter presents a measurement of the W+W− production cross section in s√ = 7 TeV pp collisions by the ATLAS experiment, using 34 pb−1 of integrated luminosity produced by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Selecting events with two isolated leptons, each either an electron or a muon, 8 candidate events are observed with an expected background of 1.7±0.6 events. The measured cross section is 41+20−16(stat)±5(syst)±1(lumi) pb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction of 44±3 pb calculated at next-to-leading order in QCD.

  • Measurement of the ZZ production cross section in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 116:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ZZ production cross section in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV center-of-mass energy is measured using 3.2 fb-1 of data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The considered Z boson candidates decay to an electron or muon pair of mass 66-116 GeV. The cross section is measured in a fiducial phase space reflecting the detector acceptance. It is also extrapolated to a total phase space for Z bosons in the same mass range and of all decay modes, giving 16.7-2.0+2.2(stat)+0.9-0.7(syst)+1.0-0.7(lumi) pb. The results agree with standard model predictions. © 2016 CERN.
