  • What affects recognition most – wrong word stress or wrong word accent?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Fonetik 2015, Working papers in General Linguistics and Phonetics, Lund. - 0280-526X. ; 55, s. 7-10, s. 7-10
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In an attempt to find out which of the two Swedish prosodic contrasts of 1) word stress pattern and 2) tonal word accent category has the greatest communicative weight, a lexical decision experiment was conducted: in one part word stress pattern was changed from trochaic to iambic, and in the other part trochaic accent II words were changed to accent I. Native Swedish listeners were asked to decide whether the distorted words were real words or ‘non-words’. A clear tendency is that listeners preferred to give more ‘non-word’ responses when the stress pattern was shifted, compared to when word accent category was shifted. This could have implications for priority of phonological features when teaching Swedish as a second language.

  • Multimodal levels of prominence : a preliminary analysis of head and eyebrow movements in Swedish news broadcasts
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings from Fonetik 2015 : Lund, June 8-10, 2015. Working Papers 55. 2015. - Lund, June 8-10, 2015. Working Papers 55. 2015.. - Lund : Centre for Languages and Literature, Lund University. - 0280-526X. ; 55, s. 11-16, s. 11-16
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents a first analysis of the distribution of head and eyebrow movements as a function of (a) phonological prominence levels (focal, non-focal) and (b) word accent (Accent 1, Accent 2) in Swedish news broadcasts. Our corpus consists of 31 brief news readings, comprising speech from four speakers and 986 words in total. A head movement was annotated for 229 (23.2%) of the words, while eyebrow movements occurred much more sparsely (67 cases or 6.8%). Results of χ2-tests revealed a dependency of the distribution of movements on the one hand and focal accents on the other, while no systematic effect of the word accent type was found. However, there was an effect of the word accent type on the annotation of ‘double’ head movements. These occurred very sparsely, and predominantly in connection with focally accented compounds (Accent 2), which are characterized by two lexical stresses. Overall, our results suggests that head beats might have a closer association with phonological prosodic structure, while eyebrow movements might be more restricted to higher-level prominence and information-structure coding. Hence, head and eyebrow movements can represent two quite different modalities of prominence cuing, both from a formal and functional point of view, rather than just being cumulative prominence markers.

  • Perception of South Swedish Word Accents
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Conference proceedings from Fonetik 2006 : Lund, June 7-9, 2006. Working Papers in Linguistics, Lund University, Centre for Languages and Literature - Lund, June 7-9, 2006. Working Papers in Linguistics, Lund University, Centre for Languages and Literature. - 0280-526X. ; 52, s. 5-8
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A perceptual experiment concerning South Swedish word accents (accent I, accent II) is described. By means of editing and resynthesis techniques the F0 pattern of a test word in a phrase context has been systematically manipulated: initial rise (glide vs. jump) and final concatenation (6 timing degrees of the accentual fall). The results indicate that both a gliding rise and a late fall seem necessary for the perception of accent II, while there appear to be no such specific, necessary cues for the perception of accent I.

  • The realisation of sj- and tj- sounds in Estonian Swedish : some preliminary results
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Working Papers. - 0280-526X. ; 55, s. 23-26
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study is to cast some light on the realisation of sj- and tj-sounds (/ɧ/ and /ɕ/) in Estonian Swedish. These sounds are said not to occur in this variety of Swedish, or to have a different realisation as compared to Standard Swedish (Lagman, 1979). Our analysis, based on repetitions of elicited words produced by five elderly speakers of Estonian Swedish, shows that sj- and tj-sounds are mainly pronounced the way they are spelt (e.g. tjock [tjɔkː] (thick, fat) or stjärna [stjɑːɳ] (star)). There appears, however, some variation in the realisation of the sj-sound, which depending on the word and position in the word can also be pronounced as a retroflex fricative [ʂ] or a palatal fricative [ç]or [ɕ].

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Fonetik 2021 : Lund, June 8–9, 2021 - Lund, June 8–9, 2021. - 0280-526X. ; 56, s. 33-35
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sound frequencies are represented in the primary auditory cortex (PAC) in a tonotopic structure which can be measured using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A previous study has investigated vowels[ъ]and [i]and seen a correlation between the vowels¶ activation and the activation of simple tones corresponding to the vowels¶ formant frequencies. Other vowels have not \et been studied. In this study, we are investigating [ъ],[ѓ], [i], and [u]and compared those with activation of simple tones corresponding to their formant frequencies. This is ongoing work, and only five volunteers have participated. The preliminary results vary from high correlation between areas activated to low or no correlation. More data has to be collected to draw any further conclusions.

  • The perceptual importance of falling pitch for speakers from different dialects of Swedish
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Fonetik 2021 : Lund, June 8–9, 2021 - Lund, June 8–9, 2021. - 0280-526X. ; 56, s. 7-13
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Falling pitch has long been argued to be a key feature in the distinction of Swedish pitch accents. In this paper, neurophysiological and behavioural evidence substantiating the perceptual importance of HL pitch contours at the word level is discussed. When presentedwith novel words, Swedes, regard-less of dialect, preattentively distinguished meaningfulwords with falling pitch.Falling pitch was also facilitative for tone mismatch detection. These responses tomeaningful HL contours in foreign words werelikely based on transfer from the native tongue, thus emphasisingthe importance of falling pitch in the discrimination of word accents in four Swedish dialectareas. However, while responses to falls were facilitated across dialects, additional dialect-dependent facilitation effects were found.

  • Phonemic and subphonemic cues in prediction : Evidence from ERP, eye-tracking and Danish words with and without stødbasis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Fonetik 2021 : Lund, June 8–9, 2021 - Lund, June 8–9, 2021. - 0280-526X. ; 56, s. 27-32
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The brain is constantly trying to predict the future and phonological and prosodic cues are used to anticipate forthcoming information. Even cues on the subphonemic level such as vowel transitions, nasalisation and assimilation across word boundaries are useful in anticipating upcoming speech. In event-related potential (ERP) studies examining subphonemic and lexical/phonological mismatches, only the latter yielded N400 effects, an ERP component associated with lexical prediction error. The results indicate that phonetic cues are resolved prelexically. However, subphonemic cues still seem to be used in prediction as evidenced by valid cues yielding faster fixations in eye-tracking studies and invalid cues modulating P600 amplitudes, indicating structural violations and context updating.

  • Verb serialization in Kammu
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Working Papers (Lund University, Department of Linguistics). - 0280-526X. ; 51, s. 65-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents the different kinds of serial verb constructions found in Kammu (a Mon-Khmer language spoken in northern Laos). Special focus is placed on how diagnostic tests (interrogative constructions, irrealis constructions and the scope of negation) can be applied to illustrate the contrast between the most prototypical serial verb constructions (e.g. directional coverbs and resultatives) and more peripheral constructions which share some of the properties of serial verb constructions (e.g. purpose constructions).

  • Question intonation in Southern Swedish
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Fonetik 2021 : Lund, June 8–9, 2021 - Lund, June 8–9, 2021. - 0280-526X. ; 56, s. 54-57
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Swedish has been generally assumed not to have any well-defined question intonation. However, with respect to Southern Swedish, Lindblad & Gårding (1973) present data showing final rises in polar (Y/N) questions. Gårding (1979) also assumes a broader and higher F0 range in Y/N questions than in statements, particularly on the final focussed word. The present study investigates the extent to which these question cues occur in a material involving spontaneous dialogues led by a speaker of Southern Swedish (Malmö). Results for utterances with question syntax show final rises in 16% of the Y/N questions and 3% of the Wh-questions. For utterances without question syntax, 79% were associated with final rises. Comparing F0 on the first prosodic word of questions, both Y/N-and Wh-questions showed a significantly higher F0 level (ca. 2-3 ST higher) than statements. A further comparison of the F0 level on the most prominent word following the first prosodic word in questions and statements showed that Y/N questions had a higher F0 on the most prominent word than statements. However, Wh-questions did not differ significantly from statements in that respect. Thus initial F0-level appears to be a strong prosodic cue distinguishing between questions (both Y/N questions and Wh-questions) and statements in the Southern Swedish material examined. F0 level on the most prominent word following the first prosodic word is also a reliable prosodic cue distinguishing Y/N questions from statements and Wh-questions, but not for distinguishing between Y/N questions and Wh-questions.

  • The filler EH in Swedish
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Working Papers. - 0280-526X. ; 52, s. 65-68
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Findings from a pilot study on the distribution, function and phonetic realization of the filler EH in interviews from SweDia2000 interviews are presented. The results show that EH occurs almost exclusively after function words at the beginning of constituents. The phonetic realization of EH was seen to be of three basic forms: a middle-high vowel (e.g. [e], [ɛ], [ə]), a vowel+nasal (e.g. [ɛm], [əm], [ən]), and a vowel with a creaky phonation. The vowel+vowel realization occurs as has been shown for English before other delays and is associated with planning of complex utterances. Since creaky phonation is associated with terminality, the creaky voice realization of EH could be interpreted as signalling the juncture between the filler and an upcoming disfluency.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings from FONETIK 2010, Working Papers. - 0280-526X. ; 54, s. 63-69
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Comparison between the way human listeners judge voice similarity and how state-of-the art GMM-UBM systems for voice recognition compare voices is a little explored area of research. In this study groups of informants judged the similarity between voice samples taken from a set of fairly similar male voices that had previously been used in a voice line-up experiment. The result from the listening tests was then compared to the scores from a UBM-GMM automatic voice comparison system, built on the Mistral LIA_RAL open source platform. The results show a correlation between scores obtained from the automatic system and the judgements by the listeners. Listeners are, however, more sensitive to language dependent parameters or idiosyncratic phonetic features such as speaking tempo, while the system only bases its likelihood ratios on spectral similarities, i.e. timbre.

Can areas that overlap neurologically, according to neuroscientific research, be proven to be related in a cognitive lingusitic way? This paper will discuss theoretical aspects concerning phonology - autism - mirror neurons.

  • Selecting antonyms for dictionary entries: methodological aspects
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Working Papers (Lund University, Department of Linguistics). - 0280-526X. ; 6, s. 95-106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper investigates the treatment of antonymy in Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner’s English Dictionary (2003) in order to find out what kinds of headwords are provided with antonyms as part of their definitions and also discusses the principles for antonym inclusion in the entries. CCALED includes canonical antonyms such as good/bad and dead/alive, as well as more contextually restricted pairings such as hot/mild and flat/fizzy. The vast majority of the antonymic pairings in the dictionary are adjectives. Most of the antonyms are morphologically different from the headwords they define and typically do not involve antonymic affixes such as non-, un- or -less. Only just over one-third of the total number of pairs is given in both directions. The principles for when antonyms are included in CCALED are not transparent to us. We propose a corpus-based method to support decisions about antonym selection and inclusion.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Working Papers. - 0280-526X. ; 55, s. 85-90
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introducing a new cat to a home with resident cats may lead to stress, aggression and even fights. In this case study 468 agonistic cat vocalisations were recorded as one cat was introduced to three resident cats in her new home. Six vocalisation types were identified: growl, howl, howl-growl, hiss, spit and snarl. Numerous other intermediate and complex vocalisations were also observed. An acoustic analysis showed differences within and between all types. Future studies include further acoustic analyses of cat vocalisations produced by a larger number of cats.
