  • On the choice of local element frame for corotational triangular shell elements
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering. - : Wiley. - 1069-8299 .- 1099-0887. ; 20:10, s. 819-825
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the context of corotational triangular shell elements, the objective of this paper is to show that for certain stability problems it is interesting to choose a local element frame invariant to the element node ordering. Two methods of obtaining such a local frame are presented. These two methods, already proposed by other authors, are reformulated. For the first one, based on the minimisation of local nodal displacements, it is shown that the iterative process can be avoided.

  • A simple pressure stabilization method for the Stokes equation
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering. - : Wiley. - 1069-8299 .- 1099-0887. ; 24:11, s. 1421-1430
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we consider a stabilization method for the Stokes problem, using equal-order interpolation of the pressure and velocity, which avoids the use of the mesh size parameter in the stabilization term. We show that our approach is stable for equal-order interpolation in the case of piecewise linear and piecewise quadratic polynomials on triangles. In the case of linear polynomials, we retrieve a well-known idea of using mass lumping as a stabilization mechanism.

  • New perspectives in managing myeloproliferative disorders : focus on the patient
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Hematological Oncology. - : Wiley. - 0278-0232 .- 1099-1069. ; 27:Suppl.1, s. 5-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Risk stratification is the basis for treatment decisions in the chronic myeloproliferative disorders, and in addition to the three established risk factors of previous thrombosis, age and platelets >1500 x 10(9), cardiovascular risk factors should be addressed. In addition, premorbidity with regard to possible side effects of platelet-reducing drugs as well as the impact on quality of life of such side effects should be considered. The near-to-normal life expectancy and long term nature of treatment also makes it necessary to consider the potential leukaemogenic effects of some cytostatic drugs.

  • Efficient three-dimensional model of rolling using an explicit finite-element formulation
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering. - : Wiley. - 1069-8299 .- 1099-0887. ; 9:7, s. 613-627
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rolling is simulated by a three-dimensional finite-element model with elastoplastic constitutive equations. The use of an explicit finite-element formulation, instead of the more commonly used implicit formulation, has reduced the required computing time. The larger of the models used in one step towards a general and complete computational model of rolling. Results from experiments and from two and three-dimensional calculations are compared.

  • Secondary immunodeficiency in lymphoproliferative malignancies
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Hematological Oncology. - : Wiley. - 0278-0232 .- 1099-1069. ; 34:3, s. 121-132
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Secondary immunodeficiencies occur as a consequence of various diseases, including hematological malignancies, and the use of pharmacological therapies, such as immunosuppressive, anti-inflammatory, and biological drugs. Infections are the main cause of morbidity and mortality in multiple myeloma (MM) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients. Recent advances in treatment have prolonged the duration of remission and the time between relapse phases in MM and CLL patients. However, managing multiple relapses and the use of salvage therapies can lead to cumulative immunosuppression and a higher risk of infections. The pathogenesis of immune deficiency secondary to lymphoproliferative malignancy is multifactorial including disease- and treatment-related factors. Supportive treatment, including early vaccination, anti-infective prophylaxis, and replacement immunoglobulin, plays a key role in preventing infections in MM and CLL. This article provides an overview of the basic immunology necessary to understand the pathogenesis of secondary immunodeficiency and the infectious complications in MM and CLL. We also discuss the evidence supporting the role of prophylactic replacement immunoglobulin treatment in patients with antibody failure secondary to MM and CLL and the indications for its use. • Piecewise divergence free discontinuous Galerkin methods
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering. - : Wiley. - 1069-8299 .- 1099-0887. ; 24:5, s. 355-366
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we consider different possibilities of using divergence-free discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Stokes problem in order to eliminate the pressure from the discrete problem. We focus on three different approaches: one based on a C0 approximation of the stream function in two dimensions (the vector potential in three dimensions), one based on the non-conforming Morley element (which corresponds to a divergence-free non-conforming Crouzeix-Raviart approximation of the velocities), and one fully discontinuous Galerkin method with a stabilization of the pressure that allows the edgewise elimination of the pressure variable before solving the discrete system. We limit the analysis in the stream function case to two spatial dimensions, while the analysis of the fully discontinuous approach is valid also in three dimensions.

  • Space-time oriented streamline diffusion methods for nonlinear conservation laws in one dimension
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering. - : Wiley. ; 10:3, s. 203-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we consider an explicit finite element mehtod, with elements adaptively orientet in space-time, for the solution of one-dimensional conservation laws, extending previous work dealing with linear convection-diffusion and incompressible flow. In particular we consider Burgers' equation and the compressible Euler equations.

  • Ingår i: Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1069-8299 .- 1099-0887. ; 24:5, s. 355-366
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we consider different possibilities of using divergence‐free discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Stokes problem in order to eliminate the pressure from the discrete problem. We focus on three different approaches: one based on a C0 approximation of the stream function in two dimensions (the vector potential in three dimensions), one based on the non‐conforming Morley element (which corresponds to a divergence‐free non‐conforming Crouzeix–Raviart approximation of the velocities), and one fully discontinuous Galerkin method with a stabilization of the pressure that allows the edgewise elimination of the pressure variable before solving the discrete system. • 2003
  • Ingår i: Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering. - : Wiley. - 1069-8299 .- 1099-0887. ; 19:11, s. 897-908
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this note we suggest a new approach to mesh smoothing, based on a combination of Laplacian smoothing and Winslow's method. Using our approach, we can avoid mesh folding and maintain/produce element stretch. We also make a comparison with a method due to Giuliani and show that the latter method cannot ensure that folding is avoided.

  • Smoothing and adaptive remeshing schemes for graded element
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering. - 1069-8299 .- 1099-0887. ; 17:1, s. 1-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Smoothing improves the mesh quality by repositioning nodes while h-adaptive remeshing changes the topology of the mesh. The combination of these two schemes is indispensable when dealing with models with distorted elements and/or moving gradients in the solution. Different smoothing techniques for creating a mesh of high quality are studied. The quality of the mesh is quantified by a distortion metric. The adaptive remeshing procedure uses a generic error estimate for determining the size of new elements. The combined techniques are implemented for a graded finite element.

  • DNA damage accumulation and repair defects in FLT3‐ITD acute myeloid leukemia : Implications for clonal evolution and disease progression
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Hematological Oncology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0278-0232 .- 1099-1069. ; 41:1, s. 26-38
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Acute myeloid leukemia is a group of hematological diseases that have a high mortality rate. During the development of this pathology, hematopoietic cells acquire chromosomal rearrangements and multiple genetic mutations, including FLT3-ITD. FLT3-ITD is a marker associated with a poor clinical prognosis and involves the activation of pathways such as PI3K/AKT, MAPK/ERK, and JAK/STAT that favor the survival and proliferation of leukemic cells. In addition, FLT3-ITD leads to overproduction of reactive oxygen species and defective DNA damage repair, both implicated in the appearance of new mutations and leukemic clones. Thus, the purpose of this review is to illustrate the molecular mechanisms through which FLT3-ITD generates genetic instability and how it facilitates clonal evolution with the generation of more resistant and aggressive cells. Likewise, this article discusses the feasibility of combined therapies with FLT3 inhibitors and inhibitors of DNA repair pathways.

  • Adaptive finite element approximation of multiphysics problems
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering. - : Wiley InterScience. - 1069-8299 .- 1099-0887. ; 24:6, s. 505-521
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Simulation of multiphysics problems is a common task in applied research and industry. Often a multiphysics solver is built by connecting several single-physics solvers into a network. In this paper, we develop a basic adaptive methodology for such multiphysics solvers. The adaptive methodology is based on a posteriori error estimates that capture the influence of the discretization errors in the different solvers on a given functional output. These estimates are derived using duality-based techniques.

  • An adaptive variational multiscale method for convection-diffusion problems
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1069-8299 .- 1099-0887. ; 25:1, s. 65-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The adaptive variational multiscale method is an extension of the variational multiscale method where the line-scale part of the solution is approximated by a sum of numerically computed solutions to localized subgrid problems. Furthermore, the crucial discretization parameters are chosen automatically by an adaptive algorithm based on a posteriori error estimates. This method has been developed for diffusion-dominated problems and applied to multiscale problems that arise in oil reservoir Simulation. In this paper, we extend the method to convection-diffusion problems. We present it duality based a posteriori error representation formula and an adaptive algorithm that tunes the fine-scale mesh size and the patch sizes of the local problems. Numerical results show rapid convergence of the adaptive algorithm. Copyright (c) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

  • Pre-treatment health-related quality of life parameters have prognostic impact in patients >65 years with newly diagnosed mantle cell lymphoma : The Nordic Lymphoma Group MCL4 (LENA-BERIT) experience
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Hematological Oncology. - : Wiley. - 0278-0232 .- 1099-1069. ; 40:1, s. 23-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, often aggressive type of B-cell lymphoma with poor survival and no cure. Cancer and cancer treatment has a negative impact on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) both during active disease and in the long term, and improvement of HRQOL is a crucial objective of cancer therapy in older patients and no curative intent. Baseline HRQOL has in other lymphoma populations been shown to be predictive of outcome. Here, we explored HRQOL, and its association with survival, by the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire, before, during and after chemotherapy in a patient cohort with MCL, treated within the NLG-MCL4 trial, designed to evaluate the addition of lenalidomide (LEN) to rituximab-bendamustine (R-B) as first-line treatment. Fifty-one patients were enrolled, median age was 71 years (range 62–84), 37 were men (73%). Pre-treatment HRQOL was similar to scores from the reference population with healthy individuals. During treatment, HRQOL deteriorated, but reverted to the same level as the reference population after treatment. There was a correlation between physical function (p = 0.001) and role function (p = 0.006) at baseline and WHO performance status, but not with other clinical or genetic prognostic factors. None of the baseline factors were predictive for treatment related to HRQOL in this cohort. Pre-treatment physical (p = 0.011) and role function (p = 0.032) were independent factors associated with overall survival, and physical function (p = 0.002) was also associated with progression free survival. These findings may possibly be used to design support during treatment and improve rehabilitation. Further investigations are needed for assessment of long-term HRQOL.

  • Modelling of addition of filler material in large deformation analysis of multipass welding
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Communications in Numerical Methods in Engineering. - : Wiley. - 1069-8299 .- 1099-0887. ; 17:9, s. 647-657
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modelling of multipass welding by defining the complete computational model at the start of the analysis requires special procedures for activation of elements at the times when the corresponding parts of the welds are made. The developed logic for handling this is applicable in any situation where elements are defined in an initial geometry which has been changed at the time when the elements are activated as in a large deformation analysis. The current implementation is for two-dimensional models but can be extended to three-dimensional cases as well
