  • Evolution and stability of altruist strategies in microbial games
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 85:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When microbes compete for limited resources, they often engage in chemical warfare using bacterial toxins. This competition can be understood in terms of evolutionary game theory (EGT). We study the predictions of EGT for the bacterial "suicide bomber" game in terms of the phase portraits of population dynamics, for parameter combinations that cover all interesting games for two-players, and seven of the 38 possible phase portraits of the three-player game. We compare these predictions to simulations of these competitions in finite well-mixed populations, but also allowing for probabilistic rather than pure strategies, as well as Darwinian adaptation over tens of thousands of generations. We find that Darwinian evolution of probabilistic strategies stabilizes games of the rock-paper-scissors type that emerge for parameters describing realistic bacterial populations, and point to ways in which the population fixed point can be selected by changing those parameters. © 2012 American Physical Society.

  • Self-similar accelerative propagation of expanding wrinkled flames and explosion triggering
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E, Statistical, nonlinear and soft matter physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 83, s. 026305-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The formulation of Taylor on the self-similar propagation of an expanding spherical piston with constant velocity was extended to an instability-wrinkled deflagration front undergoing acceleration with RF∝tα, where RF is the instantaneous flame radius, t the time, and α a constant exponent. The formulation describes radial compression waves pushed by the front, trajectories of gas particles, and the explosion condition in the gas upstream of the front. The instant and position of explosion are determined for a given reaction mechanism. For a step-function induction time, analytic formulas for the explosion time and position are derived, showing their dependence on the reaction and flow parameters including thermal expansion, specific heat ratio, and acceleration of the front.

  • Kinetic theory for spin-1/2 particles in ultrastrong magnetic fields
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 102:4

    • When the Zecman energy approaches the characteristic kinetic energy of electrons, Landau quantization becomes important. In the vicinity of magnetars, the Zeeman energy can even be relativistic. We start from the Dirac equation and derive a kinetic equation for electrons, focusing on the phenomenon of Landau quantization in such ultrastrong but constant magnetic fields, neglecting short-scale quantum phenomena. It turns out that the usual relativistic gamma factor of the Vlasov equation is replaced by an energy operator, depending on the spin state, and also containing momentum derivatives. Furthermore, we show that the energy eigenstates in a magnetic field can be computed as eigenfunctions of this operator. The dispersion relation for electrostatic waves in a plasma is computed, and the significance of our results is discussed.

  • Multirelaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model for droplet heating and evaporation under forced convection
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 91:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the evaporation of a droplet surrounded by superheated vapor with relative motion between phases. The evaporating droplet is a challenging process, as one must take into account the transport of mass, momentum, and heat. Here a lattice Boltzmann method is employed where phase change is controlled by a nonideal equation of state. First, numerical simulations are compared to the D-2 law for a vaporizing static droplet and good agreement is observed. Results are then presented for a droplet in a Lagrangian frame under a superheated vapor flow. Evaporation is described in terms of the temperature difference between liquid-vapor and the inertial forces. The internal liquid circulation driven by surface-shear stresses due to convection enhances the evaporation rate. Numerical simulations demonstrate that for higher Reynolds numbers, the dynamics of vaporization flux can be significantly affected, which may cause an oscillatory behavior on the droplet evaporation. The droplet-wake interaction and local mass flux are discussed in detail.

  • Saturated ablation in metal hydrides and acceleration of protons and deuterons to keV energies with a soft-x-ray laser

  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 83:1, s. 016403-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies of materials under extreme conditions have relevance to a broad area of research, including planetary physics, fusion research, materials science, and structural biology with x-ray lasers. We study such extreme conditions and experimentally probe the interaction between ultrashort soft x-ray pulses and solid targets (metals and their deuterides) at the FLASH free-electron laser where power densities exceeding 1017 W/cm2 were reached. Time-of-flight ion spectrometry and crater analysis were used to characterize the interaction. The results show the onset of saturation in the ablation process at power densities above 1016 W/cm2. This effect can be linked to a transiently induced x-ray transparency in the solid by the femtosecond x-ray pulse at high power densities. The measured kinetic energies of protons and deuterons ejected from the surface reach several keV and concur with predictions from plasma-expansion models. Simulations of the interactions were performed with a nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium code with radiation transfer. These calculations return critical depths similar to the observed crater depths and capture the transient surface transparency at higher power densities.

  • Experimental realization of a minimal microscopic heat engine
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical review. E. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2470-0045 .- 2470-0053. ; 96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microscopic heat engines are microscale systems that convert energy flows between heat reservoirs into work or systematic motion. We have experimentally realized a minimal microscopic heat engine. It consists of a colloidal Brownian particle optically trapped in an elliptical potential well and simultaneously coupled to two heat baths at different temperatures acting along perpendicular directions. For a generic arrangement of the principal directions of the baths and the potential, the symmetry of the system is broken, such that the heat flow drives a systematic gyrating motion of the particle around the potential minimum. Using the experimentally measured trajectories, we quantify the gyrating motion of the particle, the resulting torque that it exerts on the potential, and the associated heat flow between the heat baths. We find excellent agreement between the experimental results and the theoretical predictions.

  • Non-Boltzmann stationary distributions and nonequilibrium relations in active baths
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most natural and engineered processes, such as biomolecular reactions, protein folding, and population dynamics, occur far from equilibrium and therefore cannot be treated within the framework of classical equilibrium thermodynamics. Here we experimentally study how some fundamental thermodynamic quantities and relations are affected by the presence of the nonequilibrium fluctuations associated with an active bath. We show in particular that, as the confinement of the particle increases, the stationary probability distribution of a Brownian particle confined within a harmonic potential becomes non-Boltzmann, featuring a transition from a Gaussian distribution to a heavy-tailed distribution. Because of this, nonequilibrium relations (e.g., the Jarzynski equality and Crooks fluctuation theorem) cannot be applied. We show that these relations can be restored by using the effective potential associated with the stationary probability distribution. We corroborate our experimental findings with theoretical arguments.

  • Newton-Cartan submanifolds and fluid membranes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 101:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We develop the geometric description of submanifolds in Newton-Cartan spacetime. This provides the necessary starting point for a covariant spacetime formulation of Galilean-invariant hydrodynamics on curved surfaces. We argue that this is the natural geometrical framework to study fluid membranes in thermal equilibrium and their dynamics out of equilibrium. A simple model of fluid membranes that only depends on the surface tension is presented and, extracting the resulting stresses, we show that perturbations away from equilibrium yield the standard result for the dispersion of elastic waves. We also find a generalization of the Canham-Helfrich bending energy for lipid vesicles that takes into account the requirements of thermal equilibrium.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 85:2, s. 020103-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the problem of optimizing released heat or dissipated work in stochastic thermodynamics. In the overdamped limit these functionals have singular solutions, previously interpreted as protocol jumps. We show that a regularization, penalizing a properly defined acceleration, changes the jumps into boundary layers of finite width. We show that in the limit of vanishing boundary layer width no heat is dissipated in the boundary layer, while work can be done. We further give an alternative interpretation of the fact that the optimal protocols in the overdamped limit are given by optimal deterministic transport (Burgers equation).

  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 85:3, s. 031119-

    • We compare dynamic mean-field and dynamic cavity methods to describe the stationary states of dilute kinetic Ising models. We compute dynamic mean-field theory by expanding in interaction strength to third order, and we compare to the exact dynamic mean-field theory for fully asymmetric networks. We show that in diluted networks, the dynamic cavity method generally predicts magnetizations of individual spins better than both first-order ("naive") and second-order ("TAP") dynamic mean-field theory.

  • Frohlich-coupled qubits interacting with fermionic baths
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 102:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider a quantum system such as a qubit, interacting with a bath of fermions as in the Frohlich polaron model. The interaction Hamiltonian is thus linear in the system variable and quadratic in the fermions. Using the recently developed extension of Feynman-Vernon theory to nonharmonic baths we evaluate quadratic and the quartic terms in the influence action. We find that for this model the quartic term vanish by symmetry arguments. Although the influence of the bath on the system is of the same form as from bosonic harmonic oscillators up to effects to sixth order in the system-bath interaction, the temperature dependence is nevertheless rather different, unless rather contrived models are considered.

    • We study how much water can be retained without leaking through boundarieswhen each unit square of a two-dimensional lattice is randomly assigned a blockof unit bottom area but with different heights from zero to $n-1$.As more blocks are put into the system, there exists a phase transition beyond whichthe system retains a macroscopic volume of water. We locate the critical points and verify that the criticalitybelongs to the two-dimensional percolation universality class. If the height distribution can be approximated as continuous for large $n$,the system is always close to a critical point and the fraction of the areabelow the resulting water level is given by the percolation threshold. This provides a universal upper bound ofareas that can be covered by water in a random landscape.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 88:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is well known that the q-state clock model can exhibit a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition if q is equal to or greater than a certain threshold, which has been believed to be five. However, recent numerical studies indicate that helicity modulus does not vanish in the high-temperature phase of the five-state clock model as predicted by the KT scenario. By performing Monte Carlo calculations under the fluctuating twist boundary condition, we show that it is because the five-state clock model does not have the fully continuous U(1) symmetry even in the high-temperature phase while the six-state clock model does. We suggest that the upper transition of the five-state clock model is actually a weaker cousin of the KT transition so that it is q≥6 that exhibits the genuine KT behavior

  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 86:5, s. 056314-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present direct numerical simulations of turbulent channel flow with passive Lagrangian polymers. To understand the polymer behavior we investigate the behavior of infinitesimal line elements and calculate the probability distribution function (PDF) of finite-time Lyapunov exponents and from them the corresponding Cramer's function for the channel flow. We study the statistics of polymer elongation for both the Oldroyd-B model (for Weissenberg number Wi<1) and the FENE model. We use the location of the minima of the Cramer's function to define the Weissenberg number precisely such that we observe coil-stretch transition at Wi1. We find agreement with earlier analytical predictions for PDF of polymer extensions made by Balkovsky, Fouxon, and Lebedev for linear polymers (Oldroyd-B model) with Wi <1 and by Chertkov for nonlinear FENE-P model of polymers. For Wi >1 (FENE model) the polymer are significantly more stretched near the wall than at the center of the channel where the flow is closer to homogenous isotropic turbulence. Furthermore near the wall the polymers show a strong tendency to orient along the streamwise direction of the flow, but near the center line the statistics of orientation of the polymers is consistent with analogous results obtained recently in homogeneous and isotropic flows.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 87:4, s. 042130-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study and solve some variations of the random K-satisfiability (K-SAT) problem-balanced K-SAT and biased random K-SAT-on a regular tree, using techniques we have developed earlier. In both these problems as well as variations of these that we have looked at, we find that the transition from the satisfiable to the unsatisfiable regime obtained on the Bethe lattice matches the exact threshold for the same model on a random graph for K = 2 and is very close to the numerical value obtained for K = 3. For higher K, it deviates from the numerical estimates of the solvability threshold on random graphs but is very close to the dynamical one-step-replica-symmetry-breaking threshold as obtained from the first nontrivial fixed point of the survey propagation algorithm.

  • Spatiotemporal chaos and the dynamics of coupled Langmuir and ion-acoustic waves in plasmas
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 81:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A simulation study is performed to investigate the dynamics of coupled Langmuir waves (LWs) and ion-acoustic waves (IAWs) in an unmagnetized plasma. The effects of dispersion due to charge separation and the density nonlinearity associated with the IAWs are considered to modify the properties of Langmuir solitons, as well as to model the dynamics of relatively large amplitude wave envelopes. It is found that the Langmuir wave electric field, indeed, increases by the effect of ion-wave nonlinearity (IWN). Use of a low-dimensional model, based on three Fourier modes, shows that a transition to temporal chaos is possible, when the length scale of the linearly excited modes is larger than that of the most unstable ones. The chaotic behaviors of the unstable modes are identified by the analysis of Lyapunov exponent spectra. The space-time evolution of the coupled LWs and IAWs shows that the IWN can cause the excitation of many unstable harmonic modes and can lead to strong IAW emission. This occurs when the initial wave field is relatively large or the length scale of IAWs is larger than the soliton characteristic size. Numerical simulation also reveals that many solitary patterns can be excited and generated through the modulational instability of unstable harmonic modes. As time goes on, these solitons are seen to appear in the spatially partial coherence state due to the free ion-acoustic radiation as well as in the state of spatiotemporal chaos due to collision and fusion in the stochastic motion. The latter results in the redistribution of initial wave energy into a few modes with small length scales, which may lead to the onset of Langmuir turbulence in laboratory as well as space plasmas.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 92:5, s. 052916-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The localized mode propagation in binary nonlinear kagome ribbons is investigated with the premise to ensure controlled light propagation through photonic lattice media. Particularity of the linear system characterized by the dispersionless flat band in the spectrum is the opening of new minigaps due to the "binarism." Together with the presence of nonlinearity, this determines the guiding mode types and properties. Nonlinearity destabilizes the staggered rings found to be nondiffracting in the linear system, but can give rise to dynamically stable ringlike solutions of several types: unstaggered rings, low-power staggered rings, hour-glass-like solutions, and vortex rings with high power. The type of solutions, i.e., the energy and angular momentum circulation through the nonlinear lattice, can be controlled by suitable initial excitation of the ribbon. In addition, by controlling the system "binarism" various localized modes can be generated and guided through the system, owing to the opening of the minigaps in the spectrum. All these findings offer diverse technical possibilities, especially with respect to the high-speed optical communications and high-power lasers.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 97:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Escape of colloidal-size particles from various kinds of solids, such as aggregates and surfaces, occurs in a wide variety of settings of both fundamental and applied scientific interest. In this paper an exact solution for the detachment of adhesive spheres from each other by means of diffusion is presented. The solution takes into account repeated detachment and reattachment events in the course of time on the way toward the permanently separated state. For strongly adhesive spheres this state is approached in an exponential manner essentially regardless of how the bound state is specified. The analytical solution is shown to capture semiquantitatively the escape from more realistic potential wells using a mapping procedure whereby equality of second virial coefficients is imposed.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 70:5:1, s. 051904-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A microscopic sample placed into a focused x-ray free electron laser beam will explode due to strong ionization on a femtosecond time scale. The dynamics of this Coulomb explosion has been modeled by Neutze et al. [Nature (London) 406, 752 (2000)] for a protein, using computer simulations. The results suggest that by using ultrashort exposures, structural information may be collected before the sample is destroyed due to radiation damage. In this paper a method is presented to include the effect of screening by free electrons in the sample in a molecular dynamics simulation. The electrons are approximated by a classical gas, and the electron distribution is calculated iteratively from the Poisson-Boltzmann equation. Test simulations of water clusters reveal the details of the explosion dynamics, as well as the evolution of the free electron gas during the beam exposure. We find that inclusion of the electron gas in the model slows down the Coulomb explosion. The hydrogen atoms leave the sample faster than the oxygen atoms, leading to a double layer of positive ions. A considerable electron density is located between these two layers. The fact that the hydrogens are found to explode much faster than the oxygens means that the diffracting part of the sample stays intact somewhat longer than the sample as a whole.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 94:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Small particles in suspension in a turbulent fluid have trajectories that do not follow the pathlines of the flow exactly. We investigate the statistics of the angle of deviation φ between the particle and fluid velocities. We show that, when the effects of particle inertia are small, the probability distribution function (PDF) Pφ of this deviation angle shows a power-law region in which Pφ∼φ-4. We also find that the PDFs of the trajectory curvature κ and modulus θ of the torsion have power-law tails that scale, respectively, as Pκ∼κ-5/2, as κ→∞, and Pθ∼θ-3, as θ→∞: These exponents are in agreement with those previously observed for fluid pathlines. We propose a way to measure the complexity of heavy-particle trajectories by the number NI(t,St) of points (up until time t) at which the torsion changes sign. We present numerical evidence that nI(St)≡limt→∞NI(t,St)t∼St-Δ for large St, with Δ≃0.5.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 86:1, s. 016313-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetry during the nonlinear evolution of the Tayler instability. We start with an initial steady state of zero helicity. Within linearized perturbation calculations, helical perturbations of this initial state have the same growth rate for either sign of helicity. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the fully nonlinear equations, however, show that an infinitesimal excess of one sign of helicity in the initial perturbation gives rise to a saturated helical state. We further show that this symmetry breaking can be described by weakly nonlinear finite-amplitude equations with undetermined coefficients which can be deduced solely from symmetry consideration. By fitting solutions of the amplitude equations to data from DNS, we further determine the coefficients of the amplitude equations.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 91:4

    • By means of a simple theoretical model and numerical simulations, we demonstrate the presence of persistent energy currents in a lattice of classical nonlinear oscillators with uniform temperature and chemical potential. In analogy with the well-known Josephson effect, the currents are proportional to the sine of the phase differences between the oscillators. Our results elucidate general aspects of nonequilibrium thermodynamics and point towards a way to practically control transport phenomena in a large class of systems. We apply the model to describe the phase-controlled spin-wave current in a bilayer nanopillar.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 92:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate numerically the magnetization dynamics of an array of nanodisks interacting through the magnetodipolar coupling. In the presence of a temperature gradient, the chain reaches a nonequilibrium steady state where energy and magnetization currents propagate. This effect can be described as the flow of energy and particle currents in an off-equilibrium discrete nonlinear Schrodinger (DNLS) equation. This model makes transparent the transport properties of the system and allows for a precise definition of temperature and chemical potential for a precessing spin. The present study proposes a setup for the spin-Seebeck effect, and shows that its qualitative features can be captured by a general oscillator-chain model.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 93:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show the link between U(1) lattice gauge theories and the off-equilibrium thermodynamics of a large class of nonlinear oscillators networks. The coupling between the oscillators plays the role of a gauge field, or connection, on the network. The thermodynamical forces that drive energy flows are expressed in terms of the curvature of the connection, analogous to a geometric phase. The model, which holds both close and far from equilibrium, predicts the existence of persistent energy and particle currents circulating in closed loops through the network. The predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations. Possible extension of the theory and experimental applications to nanoscale devices are briefly discussed.
