  • Ile de Nantes 2000-2010: a method for the meantime?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Landscape Architecture. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1862-6033 .- 2164-604X. ; 11, s. 72-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this critique of the Ile de Nantes, the authors consider design as a means of intervening in the ever-ongoing dynamics of a site and judge change of space instead of state of space. They base their critique on a transformation analysis and offer an interpretation of site and design through micronarratives, from which they develop an evaluation of the plan-guide. As an alternative to the master plan that aims at static 'form' according to an urban model, they argue that the plan-guide, as a journey-form, supports urban 'trans-form-ation' beyond predefined models. After judging the plan-guide as particularly apt to steer the Ile de Nantes' first ten years of transition from old wharf to new city (the meantime), the authors point out some weaknesses that, if overcome, could enable the plan-guide to become a strategy for urban transformation based on an alternative framework.

  • Barcelona's Tres Turons: three hills and three cruelties
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Landscape Architecture. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1862-6033 .- 2164-604X. ; 15, s. 56-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As uncertainty increasingly characterizes urbanization processes, critically addressing a design project as an isolated object after completion does not satisfy the need for criticism to reflect larger urban transformation projects during their unfolding. Using the example of the Tres Turons Park project in Barcelona, this critique attempts to stage criticism ‘in the meantime’, benefitting from a moment in which the project is on hold. The authors involved students of two consecutive master’s courses into the enquiry and the formulation of a grounded position. Proffered by methods extracted from literary theory and site thinking, the authors build an argument to challenge the boldness of the project’s ecological narrative, which they claim stands in the way of a more fruitful urban transformation. The acquired knowledge will be reintroduced into the ongoing process, to possibly allow for improvement of the project.

  • Meaning versus signification: towards a more nuanced view of landscape aesthetics
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Landscape Architecture. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1862-6033 .- 2164-604X. ; 7, s. 28-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An informed and rigorous approach to aesthetics will offer vital and distinctive ways to understand complex and multifaceted landscapes. How is it, then, that landscape aesthetics are so often simplified in order to be easily-recorded and handled instrumentally, often as just one of many (physically obvious) parameters for analysis? At a time when universities must educate students on the basis of academic research, the author suggests that it is increasingly important that we make the basis of how we employ landscape aesthetics explicit. A more fundamental connection to the philosophical field of aesthetics will contribute to an increased consciousness of aesthetic considerations in education and the professional field. Giving a brief overview of modernist and later post-modern trends in landscape aesthetics, the author argues for an approach based on the theories of Benedetto Croce and others, which roots 'meaning' as dialectical 'language acts' (1967). From this perspective, all aesthetic practice might be considered as intentional acts for the expression of meaning. Regarding aesthetics as an 'expressioning' activity will thus lay the ground for an agency-oriented-attempt to offer more philosophical relevance in methods for evaluating landscapes and practicing design than is currently the case.

  • Tropism and tectonics - fundamental principles of space formation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Landscape Architecture. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1862-6033 .- 2164-604X. ; 9, s. 64-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this study is to contribute to the understanding of what characterizes substantive theory in landscape architecture. The discipline is considered to be evolving toward a unique mindset, significant to the sustainable development of human settlements. The aim of this study is to highlight two fundamental, and essentially different, principles of space formation: tropism and tectonics. A philosophical approach is used to discuss different ways of thinking, and approaching, landscape change. The point of departure is to distinguish between the use of terms related to dynamic progression and those related to static conditions. Tropism describes a dynamic principle of the growth of living organisms, while tectonics describes the static principle of erecting a framework, one for a building or a bridge. Tropism is vital to the management of living landscapes and their design through maintenance. The conclusion is that both tropism and tectonics require attention in order to further develop the theoretical framework.

  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The apprehension of any field of practice requires overview, today more than ever. Inundated with information, we are obliged to constantly browse, search, or roam, relentlessly seeking out patterns solid or sustainable enough to stand out as coherent identities, areas, professions, discipline or categories. As design theorist Clive Dilnot has pointed out (Dilnot 2009:377), this is ‘the stated ethos’ of the survey, also within the increasingly diversified design field: to provide an inventory, to register what and how, where and when, to pedagogically make sense of a vast expanse of multifarious practices. As a systematic collecting of facts, the survey situates and captures relations, it enables identification of successive orders or traditions, it allows for recognition of characteristics and clusters, it permits the tracing of processes, both backwards and forward. And perhaps this latter aspect is the most decisive: the fact that as the careful assembling of a data set, the survey does not simply provide a record or blueprint of a situation, but constitutes itself a mapping practice, which ‘allows a trajectory to be formed in the mind and that historical trajectory is (or so we assume) the basis of beginning to know in relation to a field’ (Dilnot 2009: 377).

  • Site Matters : Strategies for Uncertainty through Planning and Design
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: JoLA - Journal of Landscape Architecture. - : Routledge. - 1862-6033 .- 2164-604X. ; 16:2, s. 90-91
  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • When the edited volume Site Matters was first published in 2005, it was at a time when the meaning of the word site had just passed what we in hindsight may describe as the real/virtual tipping point. Having fulfilled its duty as a progressivist signpost in the zoning of the modern cityscape, the word was already back then fully registered as a basic staple of the network technology and the World Wide Web. If the word used to have certain concrete environmental referentials, according to the editors it had become increasingly ‚Äòdisassociated from the considerations of physical conditions‚Äô (Burns &, Kahn 2005: ix) reflected in increasingly lofty and speculative, computer-aided urban design proposals, furthermore often projecting settings meant to be mediated rather than experienced ‚Äòlive‚Äô. Over less than a decade, the morphological and experiential variety previously implied in the word site‚Äîbuilding sites, campsites, landfill sites, landing sites, nesting sites, picnic sites, or archeological sites, just to mention a few‚Äîhad merged to form a generic, informational and communicative web-site, a mere placeholder for a mesh of interlinked, stacked and exchangeable content. When the editors of Site Matters, Andrea Kahn and Carol J. Burns, now return to the topic in a significantly revised second edition, the ‚Äòmattering‚Äô of site is of a totally different magnitude. While their initial holding on to site might have been motivated by its material and analog qualities, the rationale behind their updated attempt to gather site insights and know-how is much more existential in kind.

  • Ingår i: JoLA - Journal of Landscape Architecture. - : European Council of Landscape Architecture Schools. - 1862-6033 .- 2164-604X. ; :9, s. 24-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While the current climate crisis tightens its stranglehold on contemporary society, many are those who put their faith in groundbreaking design and artistic innovation. As a side effect of the climate threat, this renewed celebration of creative agency may be welcome, not the least from a landscape architecture perspective, since in the context of sustainable development every design action is also a landscaping gesture with environmental implications. Nevertheless, isolated from a broader societal context, these new eco-scapes risk ending up as nothing but attractive emerald patches disguising a sprawling global ‘junkspace’. As an expanded field of aesthetic and political agency, however, the emerging sustainability culture offers new perspectives on creative spatial practice. Approaching the environmental issue from the perspective of contemporary landscape related art practices, this article seeks to contribute to the articulation of a landscape aesthetics that would meet the requirements of our agitated time. Such articulation, however, requires a reconsideration of landscape aesthetics beyond the consoling and beautiful, as well as a fundamental shift in landscape thinking from representation to agency. The future eco-scape is not necessarily a sphere where you feel ‘at ease’, but a performative and unsettled space in constant transformation and change.

  • Whose goodness? : ethics and aesthetics in a landscape of dissensus
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: JoLA - Journal of Landscape Architecture. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1862-6033 .- 2164-604X. ; 7:2, s. 76-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Is there a logical relationship between ethics and aesthetics? Or perhaps even a natural link between practical reasoning, ‘common sense’ and the sphere of sensuous judgment? Propelled by an increasing environmental engagement and landscape awareness, these and similar philosophical questions again incur interest, motivating commentators to talk about ‘an ethical turn’. However, it is a ‘turn’ that gives rise to supplementary questions concerning the role of aesthetics and the conditions for creativity, contestation and change. Revisiting earlier ethico-aesthetic turns and twists, from modernist anti-aesthetics to contemporary neo- and onto-aesthetics, the essay aims to historicize the relationship between ethics and aesthetics, including the effect on landscape in these polemics. Ultimately, the ethico-aesthetic conjuncture constitutes the structural paradox of a ‘modernity’, which simultaneously expands horizontally and elevates vertically, consensually interlocking assumptions of commonality, subjectivity and reality. The critical alternative, it is argued, is to consider the aesthetic as a political site, where the distribution of the sensuous is a dissensual matter of (landscape) concern.

  • Experience of vegetation-borne colours
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Landscape Architecture. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1862-6033 .- 2164-604X. ; 9, s. 60-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The perception of vegetation-borne colours is inherent to the human landscape experience and, thus, central to landscape architects' design and management practices. The topic, however, is under-researched. This study explores people's perception of, and emotional responses to, colours of vegetation and how that perception is influenced by distance, seasonal changes, and the complexity of the vegetation system. The results show that even small distance changes, within the close-up spectrum of 0 to 20 metres, influence vegetation-borne colour to be experienced in two qualitatively different ways: 1) as a 'colour mass' and, 2) as 'colour architecture'. In addition to the seasons, distance was a decisive element when it came to perceiving a colour's hue, value, and chroma; the varying vegetation compositions, however, were less influential. A dynamic relationship was also illustrated-with regard to emotional response-the distance at which the perceived colours generated the most positive associations changed with the seasons.

  • Aesthetic creation theory and landscape architecture
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Landscape Architecture. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1862-6033 .- 2164-604X. ; 11, s. 80-91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent decades the landscape architectural discourse has tended to eschew ideas of aesthetics while focusing instead on notions of functional and sustainable design. We offer the view that Aesthetic Creation Theory, whose principal exponent is the philosopher Nick Zangwill, has the potential to redress this imbalance by interpreting landscape architecture as 'art'. Zangwill's account of 'art' differs, however, from many other definitions found in philosophical aesthetics: it holds that works of art have aesthetic functions that are essential to them, but also allows that they have other, non-aesthetic functions, for example practical or ecological ones. It thus removes the strict distinction between fine art and the useful arts. After introducing Zangwill's theory, we discuss some rival theories of art and then explore the virtues of Aesthetic Creation Theory for the theory, practice, and pedagogy of landscape architecture.

  • The effects of affect. A plea for distance between the human and non-human
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Landscape Architecture. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1862-6033 .- 2164-604X. ; 13, s. 46-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Agreeing with Elizabeth Meyer to put aesthetics back on the landscape agenda, this article takes issue with the recent turn to the theoretical discourse of affect that advocates a continuity between object and subject, between the human and non-human. In this article we focus on the effects of the notion of affect in ecological landscape design and argue for an environmental aesthetics that sustains distance by discussing the concepts of 'disinterestedness' and the sublime. An aesthetics sustaining distance between subject and object could offer ways to 'free' the beholder and create space to reflect actively and critically on the connection between the human and non-human. As much an attempt to inject the political as an attempt to question organicist tendencies in landscape theory and design, this article focuses on the effects of affect, foregrounding the risks of shuffling human/non-human aesthetics and ethics.

    • In the summer of 2021, JoLA issued a call for Thinking Eye articles on the theme of Home ecologies. The theme, referring to new conceptualizations of home ‘habitats’, biological and metaphorical, evoked multiple creative responses that explored how landscape researchers and practitioners were responding to prevailing recommendations of being at home in the midst of a global pandemic. As we walked through previously untrailed streets, made friends with unknown neighbours and noticed the varied microecologies that we share our environments with, we developed a curiosity for and kinship with the mundane and ordinary. This call sought to highlight creative explorations that could help us make sense of this imposed confinement and mundanity and speculate on alternative ways of inhabiting and designing cities. The selected Home ecologies articles invite us to reclaim our bodies and to slow down in design; an invitation extended by other articles featured in this issue.
