  • User Experience in Social Human-Robot Interaction
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Ambient Computing and Intelligence (IJACI). - : I G I Global. - 1941-6237 .- 1941-6245. ; 8:2, s. 12-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Socially interactive robots are expected to have an increasing importance in human society. For social robots to provide long-term added value to people’s lives, it is of major importance to stressthe need for positive user experience (UX) of such robots. The human-centered view emphasizes various aspects that emerge in the interaction between humans and robots. However, a positive UX does not appear by itself but has to be designed for and evaluated systematically. In this paper, the focus is on the role and relevance of UX in human-robot interaction (HRI) and four trends concerning the role and relevance of UX related to socially interactive robots are identified, and three challenges related to its evaluation are also presented. It is argued that current research efforts and directions are not sufficient in HRI research, and that future research needs to further address interdisciplinary research in order to achieve long-term success of socially interactive robots.

  • Exploring Multi-Path Communication in Hybrid Mobile Ad Hoc Networks
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Ambient Computing and Intelligence (IJACI). - : IGI Global. - 1941-6237 .- 1941-6245. ; 2:4, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ambient computing requires the integration of multiple mobile heterogeneous networks. Multi-path communication in such scenarios can provide reliability and privacy benefits. Even though the properties of multi-path routing have been extensively studied and a number of algorithms proposed, implementation of such techniques can be tricky, particularly when resource-constrained nodes are connected to each other through hybrid networks with different characteristics. In this paper, the authors discuss the challenges involved in implementing multipath communication on a middleware for hybrid mobile ad hoc networks. The authors present the PLASTIC middleware, several compelling applications of multi-path communication and the main issues concerning their implementation as a primitive middleware-provided communication.

  • Testing Exchangeability With Martingale for Change-Point Detection
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Ambient Computing and Intelligence (IJACI). - Hershey, PA : IGI Global. - 1941-6237 .- 1941-6245. ; 12:2, s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work proposes a new exchangeability test for a random sequence through a martingale-based approach. Its main contributions include 1) an additive martingale which is more amenable for designing exchangeability tests by exploiting the Hoeffding-Azuma lemma and 2) different betting functions for constructing the additive martingale. By choosing the underlying probability density function of p-values as a betting function, it can be shown that, when a change-point appears, a satisfying trade-off between the smoothness and expected one-step increment of the martingale sequence can be obtained. An online algorithm based on beta distribution parametrization for constructing this betting function is discussed in detail as well. © 2021, IGI Global.

  • Fake news and aggregated credibility : conceptualizing a co-creative medium for evaluation of sources online
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Ambient Computing and Intelligence (IJACI). - 1941-6237 .- 1941-6245. ; 11:4, s. 1-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The accelerated spread of fake news via the Internet and social media such as Facebook and Twitter have created a debate concerning the credibility of sources online. Assessing the credibility of these sources is generally a complex task and cannot solely rely on computer-based algorithms as evaluation still requires human intelligence. The research question guiding this article deals with the conceptualization of a theoretically anchored concept of a participatory and co-creative medium for evaluation of sources online. The concept-driven design research methodology was applied to address the research question, which consisted of seven activities that unify design and theory. The result of this article is a proposed concept that aims to support the assessment of the credibility of sources online using crowdsourcing as an approach for evaluation. The practical implications of the proposed concept could be to constrain the spread of fake news, strengthen online democratic discourse, and potentially improve the quality of online information.

  • Conceptually Advancing “Application Mobility” Towards Design
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Ambient Computing and Intelligence. - : IGI Global. - 1941-6245 .- 1941-6237. ; 4:3, s. 20-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mobility has become an omnipresent part of our modern IT society. Alongside the general mobility taxonomy of mobile users, terminals, sessions and services, there are also more specialized forms of mobility. Context Awareness Supported Application Mobility (CASAM) or “Application Mobility” is one such form that is explored in this paper. CASAM builds on the idea of using context to move an application between different devices during its execution, in order to provide relevant information and/or services. In this article we use a concept-driven approach to advance mobile systems research, integrating it with a more traditional user-centric method and a case study, further exploring the concept of CASAM. To empirically situate our design work we conducted an empirical study of a home care service group serving the Swedish municipality of Skellefteå, followed by an exercise in matching the properties of the CASAM concept in relation to problems within current workflow (e.g. scheduling, travel, care situation, communication and debriefing). The result is a proposal for an IT artifact manifesting the CASAM concept, attending to all the identified problems while at the same time validating the concept.

  • Interaction per se : understanding “the ambience of interaction” as manifested and situated in everyday & ubiquitous IT-use
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Ambient Computing and Intelligence. - : IGI Global. - 1941-6237 .- 1941-6245. ; 2:2, s. 1-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interaction is a core concept in the fields of Ubiquitous computing, Ambient systems design, and generally in the fields of HCI and Interaction Design. Despite this, a lack of knowledge about the fundamental character of interaction still exists. Researchers have explored interaction from the viewpoints of user-centered design and design of graphical user interfaces, where interaction stands for the link between technology and humans or denotes the use aspect. A framework is proposed for exploring interaction as a design space in itself between a human and the technology. It is proposed that this framework for interaction as a design space for Interaction Design, in which the very form of the in-between, the interaction, be explicitly targeted. It is an opportunity to go beyond user and usability studies to seek answers to fundamental questions concerning the form and character of interaction as implemented in today’s interactive systems. Moreover, this framework is an opportunity to expand and explain a new design space for Interaction Design. The proposed framework, anchored in two exemplifying cases, illustrates the character and the form of interaction as it situates itself in online, ubiquitous and everyday IT use.
