  • Magnetic field threshold for runaway generation in tokamak disruptions
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 35th European Physical Society Conference on Plasma Physics, EPS 2008 Combined with the 10th International Workshop on Fast Ignition of Fusion Targets; Hersonissos, Crete; Greece; 9 June 2008 through 13 June 2008. - 9781622763351 ; 32:2, s. 1014-1017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experimental observations on large tokamaks show that the number of runaway electrons produced in disruptions depends sensitively on the magnetic field strength. The presence of a whistler wave instability (WWI) excited by runaway electrons may be the reason for this observation since the linear growth rates of these waves are such that they are stable for high magnetic field (so the runaway beam can form) but unstable for low magnetic field. The quasi-linear diffusion process due to the WWI represents a very efficient pitch-angle scattering mechanism for runaways and consequently may stop runaway beam formation. In this work, the criterion for runaway suppression by WWI is compared with a criterion for substantial runaway production obtained by calculating how many runaway electrons can be produced before the induced toroidal electric field diffuses out of the plasma.

  • Sawtooth control mechanism using counter current propagating ICRH in JET
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: EPS Conf. Plasma Phys., EPS - Europhys. Conf. Abstr.. - 9781622763351 ; , s. 2010-2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sawtooth control mechanism in plasmas employing off-axis ICCD is reinvestigated. In particular, for counter propagating waves on the high field side, asymmetrically distributed energetic passing ions destabilise the ideal internal kink mode when the q=1 surface resides within a narrow region centred about the shifted fundamental cyclotron resonance.

  • Study of collisionless TE and ITG modes in an ITER-like equilibrium
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 35th EPS Conference on Plasma Physics, Hersonissos, Greece, 9-13 June, 2008, ECA. - 9781622763351 ; 32F:2, s. 4.024-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The linear stability of collisionless trapped electron (TE) and ion temperature gradient (ITG) modes is studied in an ITER-like magnetic field configuration. An advanced fluid model for ITG-TE mode [1] is used and an eigenvalue equation along a field line is derived using the ballooning mode formalism. The eigenvalue problem is solved numerically using a standard shooting technique and applying WKB type boundary conditions. The growth rates and real frequencies of the most unstable modes and their eigenfunctions are calculated. Effects of the magnetic shear, trapped electrons fraction, wavevector, temperature ratios, and temperature gradients on mode stability are discussed.

  • Anomalous impurity transport in tokamaks in the presence of RF fields
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 35th EPS Conference on Plasma Physics, Hersonissos, Greece, 9-13 June, 2008, ECA. - 9781622763351 ; 32:2, s. 882-885
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent experiments1-4 have shown that auxiliary heating can influence impurity accumulation in Tokamaks. In the present study the transport of impurities by Ion-Temperature-Gradient (ITG) and Trapped-Electron (TE) mode turbulence in the presence of radio frequency (rf) fields in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies is investigated using an electrostatic, collisionless fluid model. The turbulence is affected by the ponderomotive force associated with the rf field of the fast magnetosonic wave in the plasma. It is shown that the inward impurity convective velocity (pinch) and diffusivity can be reduced by the rf field, in particular close to the wave resonance location where the ponderomotive force may be significant. However, the steady state impurity density peaking factor -∇nz/nz does not seem to be as strongly affected by the rf field as indicated by recent tokamak experiments.
