  • Multi-Decadal Changes in Tundra Environments and Ecosystems : Synthesis of the International Polar Year-Back to the Future Project (IPY-BTF)
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Ambio. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 40:6, s. 705-716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the responses of tundra systemsto global change has global implications. Most tundraregions lack sustained environmental monitoring and oneof the only ways to document multi-decadal change is toresample historic research sites. The International PolarYear (IPY) provided a unique opportunity for such researchthrough the Back to the Future (BTF) project (IPY project#512). This article synthesizes the results from 13 paperswithin this Ambio Special Issue. Abiotic changes includeglacial recession in the Altai Mountains, Russia; increasedsnow depth and hardness, permafrost warming, andincreased growing season length in sub-arctic Sweden;drying of ponds in Greenland; increased nutrient availabilityin Alaskan tundra ponds, and warming at mostlocations studied. Biotic changes ranged from relativelyminor plant community change at two sites in Greenland tomoderate change in the Yukon, and to dramatic increasesin shrub and tree density on Herschel Island, and in subarcticSweden. The population of geese tripled at one sitein northeast Greenland where biomass in non-grazed plotsdoubled. A model parameterized using results from a BTFstudy forecasts substantial declines in all snowbeds andincreases in shrub tundra on Niwot Ridge, Colorado overthe next century. In general, results support and provideimproved capacities for validating experimental manipulation, remote sensing, and modeling studies.

  • Advances in Magnetics Roadmap on Spin-Wave Computing
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Magnetics. - 0018-9464. ; 58:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnonics addresses the physical properties of spin waves and utilizes them for data processing. Scalability down to atomic dimensions, operation in the GHz-to-THz frequency range, utilization of nonlinear and nonreciprocal phenomena, and compatibility with CMOS are just a few of many advantages offered by magnons. Although magnonics is still primarily positioned in the academic domain, the scientific and technological challenges of the field are being extensively investigated, and many proof-of-concept prototypes have already been realized in laboratories. This roadmap is a product of the collective work of many authors that covers versatile spin-wave computing approaches, conceptual building blocks, and underlying physical phenomena. In particular, the roadmap discusses the computation operations with Boolean digital data, unconventional approaches like neuromorphic computing, and the progress towards magnon-based quantum computing. The article is organized as a collection of sub-sections grouped into seven large thematic sections. Each sub-section is prepared by one or a group of authors and concludes with a brief description of current challenges and the outlook of further development for each research direction. Author

  • A 4-mb toggle MRAM based on a novel bit and switching method
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on magnetics. - 0018-9464 .- 1941-0069. ; 41:1, s. 132-136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 4-Mb magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM) with a novel magnetic bit cell and toggle switching mode is presented. The circuit was designed in a five level metal, 0.18-mum complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor process with a bit cell size of 1.55 mum(2). The new bit cell uses a balanced synthetic antiferromagnetic free layer and a phased write pulse sequence to provide robust switching performance with immunity from half-select disturbs. This switching mode greatly improves the operational performance of the MRAM as compared to conventional MRAM. A detailed description of this 4-Mb toggle MRAM is presented.

  • Intrinsic reliability of AlOx-based magnetic tunnel junctions
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on magnetics. - 0018-9464 .- 1941-0069. ; 42:10, s. 2661-2663
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a detailed investigation into the intrinsic tunnel barrier reliability in AlOx-based magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) as a function of aluminum thickness and oxidation time. The intrinsic reliability is measured as the ramped breakdown voltage (V-bd) at room temperature for both positive and negative polarity. We find that Vbd generally increases with the resistance-area (RA) product of the MTJ. While this dependence is quite strong at low RA, it gradually weakens for higher RA. At fixed RA, Vbd also depends on the original Al film thickness with better properties for thicker Al. Finally, we observe a polarity dependence of V-bd which changes sign as the MTJ goes from thin Al to thick Al. We attribute the polarity dependence to the different quality of the top and bottom interfaces and conclude that the interface emitting the tunneling electrons primarily governs the barrier reliability.

  • MgO-based tunnel junction material for high-speed toggle magnetic random access memory
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on magnetics. - 0018-9464 .- 1941-0069. ; 42:8, s. 1935-1939
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the first demonstration of a magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM) circuit incorporating MgO-based magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) material for higher performance. We compare our results to those of AlOx-based devices, and we discuss the MTJ process optimization and material changes that made the demonstration possible. We present data on key MTJ material attributes for different oxidation processes and free-layer alloys, including resistance distributions, bias dependence, free-layer magnetic properties, interlayer coupling, breakdown voltage, and thermal endurance. A tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) greater than 230% was achieved with CoFeB free layers and greater than 85% with NiFe free layers. Although the TMR with NiFe is at the low end of our MgO comparison, even this MTJ material enables faster access times, since its TMR is almost double that of a similar structure with an AlOx barrier. Bit-to-bit resistance distributions are somewhat wider for MgO barriers, with sigma about 1.5% compared to about 0.9% for AlOx. The read access time of our 4 Mb toggle MRAM circuit was reduced from 21 ns with AlOx to a circuit-limited 17 ns with MgO.

  • Correlation of magnetic and magnetoresistive properties of nanoporous Co/Pd thin multilayers fabricated on anodized TiO2 templates
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we consider a technological approach to obtain a high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the Co/Pd multilayers deposited on nanoporous TiO2 templates of different types of surface morphology. It is found that the use of templates with homogeneous and smoothed surface relief, formed on silicon wafers, ensures conservation of perpendicular anisotropy of the deposited films inherent in the continuous multilayers. Also, their magnetic hardening with doubling of the coercive field is observed. However, inhomogeneous magnetic ordering is revealed in the porous films due to the occurrence of magnetically soft regions near the pore edges and/or inside the pores. Modeling of the field dependences of magnetization and electrical resistance indicates that coherent rotation is the dominant mechanism of magnetization reversal in the porous system instead of the domain-wall motion typical of the continuous multilayers, while their magnetoresistance is determined by electron-magnon scattering, similarly to the continuous counterpart. The preservation of spin waves in the porous films indicates a high uniformity of the magnetic ordering in the fabricated porous systems due to a sufficiently regular pores array introduced into the films, despite the existence of soft-magnetic regions. The results are promising for the design and fabrication of future spintronic devices.

  • Enhanced Perpendicular Exchange Bias in Co/Pd Antidot Arrays
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electronic Materials. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0361-5235 .- 1543-186X. ; 48:3, s. 1492-1497
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetic nanostructures revealing the exchange bias (EB) effect have attracted much interest in recent years due to their promising applications in spintronics, magneticsensing and recording devices with various functionalities. In this paper, we report on the perpendicular exchange bias effect in a multilayered thin film composed of [Co/Pd] ferromagnetic multilayers exchange-coupled to an antiferromagnetic IrMn. The film was deposited on a porous anodized titania template. Influences of the films' surface morphology as well as the order of layers deposited on the EB effect were studied. The enhancements of the EB field H-EB (up to 30%) and the coercive field H-C (two times) were achieved in the nanoporous films relative to their continuous film counterparts, which could be attributed to the specific morphology of the porous surfaces.

  • Complex magnetic ordering in nanoporous Co/Pd (5)-IrMn multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and its impact on magnetization reversal and magnetoresistance
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 22:6, s. 3661-3674
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have systematically investigated the magnetization reversal characteristics and magnetoresistance of continuous and nanoporous [Co/Pd](5)-IrMn multilayered thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy at different temperatures (4-300 K). For their nanostructuring, porosity was induced by means of deposition onto templates of anodized titania with small (similar to 30 nm in diameter) homogeneously distributed pores. The magnetization reversal and magnetoresistance of the porous films were found to be closely related to the splitting of the ferromagnetic material into regions with different magnetic properties, in correlation with the complex morphology of the porous system. Independent magnetization reversal is detected for these regions, and is accompanied by its strong impact on the magnetic order in the capping IrMn layer. Electron-magnon scattering is found to be a dominant mechanism of magnetoresistance, determining its almost linear field dependence in a high magnetic field and contributing to its magnetoresistance behavior, similar to magnetization reversal, in a low magnetic field. Partial rotation of IrMn magnetic moments, consistent with the magnetization reversal of the ferromagnet, is proposed as an explanation for the two-state resistance behavior observed in switching between high-resistive and low-resistive values at the magnetization reversal of the porous system studied.

  • Influence of interfacial magnetic ordering and field-cooling effect on perpendicular exchange bias and magnetoresistance in nanoporous IrMn/ Co/Pd films
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 127:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied systematically the effect of field cooling on the magnetic properties of continuous and porous IrMn/[Co/Pd] films. It is found that the coexistence of two ferromagnetic (FM) phases in the porous film, namely, hard-magnetic and soft-magnetic ones, with significantly different magnetic properties relates to the role of pore edges and modifies its magnetic and magnetoresistive properties. It is shown that annealing of the films with their subsequent cooling in an external magnetic field applied for aligning the magnetic moments in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) IrMn layer improves effectively the uniaxial perpendicular anisotropy of the [Co/Pd] layer and induces unidirectional anisotropy in its hard-magnetic regions, blocking simultaneously the soft-magnetic parts by pinning their magnetic moments along the film plane. Magnetoresistance of both continuous and porous films is found to be determined mainly by electron-magnon scattering, whereas the complex morphology of the porous film providing different orientations of exchange coupling at the AFM/FM interface in different film regions modifies significantly the spin-dependent electron transport. The revealed asymmetry of the field dependences of magnetoresistance is attributed both to unidirectional magnetic anisotropy of the FM layer and its splitting into magnetically nonequivalent regions in the porous films. The origin of the observed phenomenon is associated with a local influence on the orientation of AFM magnetic moments by an adjacent ferromagnet.

  • 2004
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on device and materials reliability. - 1530-4388 .- 1558-2574. ; 4:3, s. 428-435
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The successful commercialization of MRAM will rely on providing customers with a robust and reliable memory product. The intrinsic reliability of magnetoresistive tunnel junction (MTJ) memory bits and the metal interconnect system of MRAM are two areas of great interest due to the new materials involved in this emerging technology. Time dependent dielectric breakdown (TDDB) and resistance drift were the two main failure mechanisms identified for intrinsic memory bit reliability. Results indicated that a lifetime over 10 years is achievable under the operating condition. For metal interconnect system, the initial results of Cu with magnetic cladding have met the reliability performance of typical nonclad Cu backend process in electromigration (EM) and iso-thermal annealing (ITA). Finally data retention is demonstrated over times orders of magnitude longer than 10 years.

  • Utility of reactively sputtered CuNx films in spintronics devices
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 111:7, s. 073912-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied nitrified copper (CuNx) thin films grown by reactive sputtering in the context of spintronic devices. The Ar-to-N-2 flow ratio enables tunability of the electrical resistivity and surface roughness of the CuNx films, with the former increasing to nearly 20 times that of Cu, and the latter reduced to the atomic scale. Incorporating this into a Ta/CuNx/Ta seed stack for spin valves improves the current-in-plane (CIP) magnetoresistance; maximum magnetoresistance results with CuNx seed layer and Cu interlayer. Finally, finite element modeling results are presented that suggest the use of CuNx in nanocontact spin torque oscillators can enhance current densities by limiting the current spread through the device. This may positively impact threshold currents, power requirements, and device reliability.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B - Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 94:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy has been used to directly image the magnetization dynamics of nanocontact (NC) spin-torque vortex oscillators (STVOs) when phase locked to an injected microwave (rf) current. The Kerr images reveal free-layer magnetization dynamics that extend outside the NC footprint, where they cannot be detected electrically, but which are crucial to phase-lock STVOs that share common magnetic layers. For a single NC, dynamics were observed not only when the STVO frequency was fully locked to that of the rf current, but also for a partially locked state characterized by periodic changes in the core trajectory at the rf frequency. For a pair of NCs, we explore the correlation between the spatial character of injection-locked dynamics and the free-running spectra. Insight gained from these images may improve understanding of the conditions required for mutual phase locking of multiple STVOs, and hence enhanced microwave power emission.

  • Temperature-dependent interlayer coupling in Ni/Co perpendicular pseudo-spin-valve structures
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 84:17, s. 174432-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The temperature-dependent coupling mechanisms in perpendicular pseudo-spin valves based on the following structure, [Ni/Co](5)/Cu(t(Cu))/[Ni/Co](2), are investigated. Despite a thick (t(Cu) >= 3 nm) Cu spacer, room-temperature measurements reveal complete coupling of the [Ni/Co](5) and [Ni/Co](2) multilayers. This coupling can be attributed to strong long range magnetostatic stray fields that penetrate the spacer layer. This results in magnetic domain imprinting and vertically correlated domains throughout the reversal process. Surprisingly, when the temperature is reduced, a complete decoupling is observed. This somewhat counterintuitive result can be explained by a large difference in the [Ni/Co](5) and [Ni/Co](2) multilayer coercivities at reduced temperatures, which then impedes domain imprinting and promotes decoupling. Finally, the decoupling temperature is found to increase with spacer thickness.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 117:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hybrid anisotropy thin film heterostructures, where layers with perpendicular and in-plane anisotropy are separated by a thin spacer, are novel materials for zero/low field spin torque oscillators and bit patterned media. Here, we report on magnetization reversal and exchange coupling in a archetypal Co/Pd (perpendicular)-NiFe (in-plane) hybrid anisotropy system studied using vector vibrating sample magnetometry. This technique allows us to quantify the magnetization reversal in each individual magnetic layer, and measure of the interlayer exchange as a function of non-magnetic spacer thickness. At large (>1 nm) spacer thicknesses Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida-like exchange dominates, with orange-peel coupling providing a significant contribution only for sub-nm spacer thickness.

  • Effect of flattened surface morphology of anodized aluminum oxide templates on the magnetic properties of nanoporous Co/Pt and Co/Pd thin multilayered films
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 427, s. 649-655
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the first time, nanoporous Al2O3 templates with smoothed surface relief characterized by flattened interpore areas were used in the fabrication of Co/Pd and Co/Pt multilayers (MLs) with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). Alternating gradient magnetometry (AGM) revealed perfectly conserved PMA in the Co/Pd and Co/Pt porous MLs (antidot arrays) with a ratio of remanent magnetization (Mr) to saturation magnetization (MS) of about 0.99, anisotropy fields (Ha) of up to 2.6 kOe, and a small deviation angle of 8° between the easy magnetization axis and the normal to the film surface. The sufficient magnetic hardening of the porous MLs with enhanced coercive field HC of up to ∼1.9 kOe for Co/Pd and ∼1.5 kOe for Co/Pt MLs, as compared to the continuous reference samples (∼1.5–2 times), is associated with the pinning of the magnetic moments on the nanopore edges. Application of the Stoner–Wohlfarth model for fitting the experimental M/MS(H) curves yielded clear evidence of the predominantly coherent rotation mechanism of magnetization reversal in the porous films.

It is concluded that movement rates may increase with high mean annual air temperature in the western part of the region, the spatial variability of movement rates within the region is very high and that altitude (and/or permafrost) together with wetness index are the main controls on the regional spatial variation. The study highlights the limitations in establishing statistical relationships between movement rates and climate using data from different field empirical studies

  • Clinical impact of molecular and cytogenetic findings in synovial sarcoma
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Genes, Chromosomes and Cancer. - : Wiley. - 1045-2257. ; 31:4, s. 72-362
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Synovial sarcoma is an aggressive soft-tissue tumor that accounts for up to 10% of soft-tissue sarcomas. Cytogenetically, synovial sarcoma is characterized by the t(X;18)(p11;q11), found in more than 95% of the tumors. This translocation results in rearrangements of the SYT gene in 18q11 and one of the SSX1, SSX2, or SSX4 genes in Xp11, creating a SYT/SSX1, SYT/SSX2, or SYT/SSX4 chimeric gene. It has been shown that patients with SYT/SSX1 fusion genes have a shorter metastasis-free survival than do patients with SYT/SSX2. Previous studies have also suggested that clonal evolution may be associated with disease progression. In the present study, RT-PCR analysis showed that all 64 examined synovial sarcomas from 54 patients had SYT-SSX chimeric genes. SYT/SSX1 was found in 40 tumors from 33 patients, SYT/SSX2 in 23 tumors from 20 patients, and SYT/SSX4 in one case. Two patients had variant SYT/SSX2 transcripts, with 57 bp and 141 bp inserts, respectively, between the known SYT and SSX2 sequences. Patients with tumors with SYT/SSX1 fusions had a higher risk of developing metastases compared to those with SYT/SSX2 fusions (P = 0.01). The reciprocal transcripts SSX1/SYT and SSX2/SYT were detected using nested PCR in 11 of the 40 samples with SYT/SSX1 and 5 of the 23 samples with SYT/SSX2, respectively. Among 20 blood samples, SYT/SSX1 and SYT/SSX2 were detected in one sample each. The t(X;18), or variants thereof, was found cytogenetically in all patients but three. Among 32 primary tumors, the t(X;18) or a variant translocation was the sole anomaly in 10. In contrast, of the seven metastatic lesions that were investigated prior to radiotherapy, only one had a t(X;18) as the sole anomaly; all other tumors displayed complex karyotypes. Cytogenetic complexity in primary tumors was, however, not associated with the development of metastases. Tumors with SYT/SSX2 less often (4/12 vs. 7/15) showed complex karyotypes than did tumors with SYT/SSX1, but the difference was not significant. Combining cytogenetic complexity and transcript data, we found that the subgroup of patients with tumors showing simple karyotypes and SYT/SSX2 fusion had the best clinical outcome (2/8 patients developed metastases), and those with tumors showing complex karyotypes together with SYT/SSX1 fusion the worst (6/7 patients developed metastases). This corresponded to 5-year metastasis-free survival rates of 0.58 and 0.0, respectively (P = 0.02).

  • Clues for early detection of autoimmune Addison's disease : myths and realities
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Internal Medicine. - : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Inc.. - 0954-6820 .- 1365-2796. ; 283:2, s. 190-199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Early detection of autoimmune Addison's disease (AAD) is important as delay in diagnosis may result in a life-threatening adrenal crisis and death. The classical clinical picture of untreated AAD is well-described, but methodical investigations are scarce. Objective: Perform a retrospective audit of patient records with the aim of identifying biochemical markers for early diagnosis of AAD.Material and methods: A multicentre retrospective study including 272 patients diagnosed with AAD at hospitals in Norway and Sweden during 1978-2016. Scrutiny of medical records provided patient data and laboratory values. Results: Low sodium occurred in 207 of 247 (84%), but only one-third had elevated potassium. Other common nonendocrine tests were largely normal. TSH was elevated in 79 of 153 patients, and hypoglycaemia was found in 10%. Thirty-three per cent were diagnosed subsequent to adrenal crisis, in whom electrolyte disturbances were significantly more pronounced (P < 0.001). Serum cortisol was consistently decreased (median 62 nmol L-1 [1-668]) and significantly lower in individuals with adrenal crisis (38 nmol L-1 [2-442]) than in those without (81 nmol L-1 [1-668], P < 0.001).Conclusion: The most consistent biochemical finding of untreated AAD was low sodium independent of the degree of glucocorticoid deficiency. Half of the patients had elevated TSH levels. Only a minority presented with marked hyperkalaemia or other nonhormonal abnormalities. Thus, unexplained low sodium and/or elevated TSH should prompt consideration of an undiagnosed AAD, and on clinical suspicion bring about assay of cortisol and ACTH. Presence of 21-hydroxylase autoantibodies confirms autoimmune aetiology. Anticipating additional abnormalities in routine blood tests may delay diagnosis.

    • Magnetic droplets, a class of highly nonlinear magnetodynamic solitons, can be nucleated and stabilized in nanocontact spin-torque nano-oscillators. Here we experimentally demonstrate magnetic droplets in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). The droplet nucleation is accompanied by power enhancement compared with its ferromagnetic resonance modes. The nucleation and stabilization of droplets are ascribed to the double-CoFeB free-layer structure in the all-perpendicular MTJ, which provides a low Zhang-Li torque and a high pinning field. Our results enable better electrical sensitivity in fundamental studies of droplets and show that the droplets can be utilized in MTJ-based applications and materials science.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 98:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy (TRSKM) was used to study precessional magnetization dynamics induced by a radio frequency (RF) current within a Al2O3/Py(5 nm)/Pt(6 nm)/Au(150 nm) spin Hall nano-oscillator structure. The Au layer was formed into two needle-shaped electrical contacts that concentrated the current in the center of a Py/Pt mesa of 4 mu m diameter. Due to the spin Hall effect, current within the Pt layer drives a spin current into the Py layer, exerting a spin transfer torque (STT). By injecting RF current and exploiting the phase sensitivity of TRSKM and the symmetry of the device structure, the STT and Oersted field torques have been separated and spatially mapped. The STT and torque due to the in-plane Oersted field are observed to exhibit minima at the device center that is ascribed to spreading of RF current that is not observed for DC current. Torques associated with the RF current may destabilize the position of the self-localized bullet mode excited by the DC current and inhibit injection locking. The present study demonstrates the need to characterize both DC and RF current distributions carefully.

  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 113:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy (TRSKM) has been used to image precessional magnetization dynamics excited by a DC current within a nano-contact (NC) spin Hall nanooscillator (SHNO). Injection of a radio frequency (RF) current was used to phase lock the SHNO to TRSKM. The out of plane magnetization was detected by means of the polar magneto optical Kerr effect (MOKE). However, longitudinal MOKE images were dominated by an artifact arising from the edges of the Au NCs. Time resolved imaging revealed the simultaneous excitation of a nonlinear "bullet" mode at the centre of the device, once the DC current exceeded a threshold value, and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) induced by the RF current. However, the FMR response observed for sub-critical DC current values exhibits an amplitude minimum at the centre, which is attributed to spreading of the RF spin current due to the reactance of the device structure. This FMR response can be subtracted to yield images of the bullet mode. As the DC current is increased above threshold, the bullet mode appears to increase in size, suggesting increased translational motion. The reduced spatial overlap of the bullet and FMR modes, and this putative translational motion, may impede the injection locking and contribute to the reduced locking range observed within NC-SHNO devices. This illustrates a more general need to control the geometry of an injection-locked oscillator so that the autonomous dynamics of the oscillator exhibit strong spatial overlap with those resulting from the injected signal. • In this research, we have analyzed the electrical resistance of Co/Pd and Co/Pt thin multilayered films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) deposited by magnetron sputtering to determine and compare their magnetoresistance (MR) mechanisms. The studies were carried out depending on the magnitude and direction of the applied magnetic field in a wide temperature range T = 3-300 K. It is shown that both the isotropic and angle-dependent MR mechanisms are different for these two films studied. Magnon and anisotropic MR mechanisms ( MMR and AMR) are found to be characteristic of the Co/Pd film, while Lorentz and spin Hall MR mechanisms (LMR and SMR) determine the magnetotransport in the Co/Pt film. The revealed differences in the MR mechanisms are discussed in terms of the quality of interfaces and properties of 5d (4d) metals.
