  • Experimental confirmation of efficient island divertor operation and successful neoclassical transport optimization in Wendelstein 7-X
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 62:4, s. 042022-042022
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases.

  • Evaluation of three semi-empirical models for superheated steam vacuum drying of timbers
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Drying Technology. - 0737-3937 .- 1532-2300. ; 21:5, s. 875-893
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Superheated steam drying at sub-atmospheric pressure (SSV) has been successfully employed in Europe and Asia for drying some types of timbers, showing that drying time could be reduced by 50% with respect to conventional drying without significant losses in the quality of the final product. This reduction is the consequence of a different heat and mass transfer control mechanism. Since SSV drying is carried out in absence of gaseous air, diffusion of the generated vapor is not a limiting factor and drying rate becomes more dependent on heat transference. Therefore, classical interpretation of timber drying as a process based on moisture migration control is not applicable to SSV. This work is targeting the development and validation of a simplified semi-empirical model for SSV drying of timbers. Mathematical representation of the proposed model is uncomplicated and straightforward to apply, and the comparison between model predicted and experimental data showed a high degree of agreement under variable drying conditions.

  • Effect of conditioning history on the characterization of hardness of thermo-mechanical densified and heat treated poplar wood
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Holzforschung. - : Walter de Gruyter. - 0018-3830 .- 1437-434X. ; 71:6, s. 515-520
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Poplar wood was modified by a combination of thermo-mechanical densification (TMD) and heat treatment (HT) process at five temperatures ranging from 170 to 210°C. A new two-step conditioning method (CM) is suggested, in the course of which the modified wood is submitted to 50°C/99% RH→25°C/65% RH, where RH means relative humidity in the climate chamber. The traditional one-step CM (25°C/65% RH) served as reference. The effects of conditioning history on hardness were observed and analyzed along with the change of dimensional stability. The hardness of the modified wood was lower in the case of the proposed CM due to more set-recovery release, but the extent of that decreased with the HT temperature. For a good hardness, HT200°C should be selected with the proposed CM, which is different from the optimization output of 180°C obtained from the traditional CM. In conclusion, a specific assessment method for the performance characterization of this type of modified wood would be beneficial for the combined TMD and HT processes.

  • Dermoscopic Evaluation of Nodular Melanoma.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: JAMA dermatology (Chicago, Ill.). - : American Medical Association (AMA). - 2168-6084 .- 2168-6068. ; 149:6, s. 699-709
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IMPORTANCE Nodular melanoma (NM) is a rapidly progressing potentially lethal skin tumor for which early diagnosis is critical. OBJECTIVE To determine the dermoscopy features of NM. DESIGN Eighty-three cases of NM, 134 of invasive non-NM, 115 of nodular benign melanocytic tumors, and 135 of nodular nonmelanocytic tumors were scored for dermoscopy features using modified and previously described methods. Lesions were separated into amelanotic/hypomelanotic or pigmented to assess outcomes. SETTING Predominantly hospital-based clinics from 5 continents. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Sensitivity, specificity, and odds ratios for features/models for the diagnosis of melanoma. RESULTS Nodular melanoma occurred more frequently as amelanotic/hypomelanotic (37.3%) than did invasive non-NM (7.5%). Pigmented NM had a more frequent (compared with invasive non-NM; in descending order of odds ratio) symmetrical pigmentation pattern (5.8% vs 0.8%), large-diameter vessels, areas of homogeneous blue pigmentation, symmetrical shape, predominant peripheral vessels, blue-white veil, pink color, black color, and milky red/pink areas. Pigmented NM less frequently displayed an atypical broadened network, pigment network or pseudonetwork, multiple blue-gray dots, scarlike depigmentation, irregularly distributed and sized brown dots and globules, tan color, irregularly shaped depigmentation, and irregularly distributed and sized dots and globules of any color. The most important positive correlating features of pigmented NM vs nodular nonmelanoma were peripheral black dots/globules, multiple brown dots, irregular black dots/globules, blue-white veil, homogeneous blue pigmentation, 5 to 6 colors, and black color. A model to classify a lesion as melanocytic gave a high sensitivity (>98.0%) for both nodular pigmented and nonnodular pigmented melanoma but a lower sensitivity for amelanotic/hypomelanotic NM (84%). A method for diagnosing amelanotic/hypomelanotic malignant lesions (including basal cell carcinoma) gave a 93% sensitivity and 70% specificity for NM. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE When a progressively growing, symmetrically patterned melanocytic nodule is identified, NM needs to be excluded.

  • The socio-environmental history of the Peloponnese during the Holocene: Towards an integrated understanding of the past
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Quaternary Science Reviews. - : Elsevier BV. - 0277-3791 .- 1873-457X. ; 136, s. 40-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Published archaeological, palaeoenvironmental, and palaeoclimatic data from the Peloponnese in Greece are compiled, discussed and evaluated in order to analyse the interactions between humans and the environment over the last 9000 years. Our study indicates that the number of human settlements found scattered over the peninsula have quadrupled from the prehistoric to historical periods and that this evolution occurred over periods of climate change and seismo-tectonic activity. We show that societal development occurs both during periods of harsh as well as favourable climatic conditions. At some times, some settlements develop while others decline. Well-known climate events such as the 4.2 ka and 3.2 ka events are recognizable in some of the palaeoclimatic records and a regional decline in the number and sizes of settlements occurs roughly at the same time, but their precise chronological fit with the archaeological record remains uncertain. Local socio-political processes were probably always the key drivers behind the diverse strategies that human societies took in times of changing climate. The study thus reveals considerable chronological parallels between societal development and palaeoenvironmental records, but also demonstrates the ambiguities in these correspondences and, in doing so, highlights some of the challenges that will face future interdisciplinary projects. We suggest that there can be no general association made between societal expansion phases and periods of advantageous climate. We also propose that the relevance of climatic and environmental regionality, as well as any potential impacts of seismo-tectonics on societal development, need to be part of the interpretative frameworks.
