  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Chinese Physics C. - : IOP Publishing. - 1674-1137 .- 2058-6132. ; 40:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 3,062 new measurements from 721 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. All the particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We also give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 117 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including new reviews on Pentaquarks and Inflation. The complete Review is published online in a journal and on the website of the Particle Data Group (http://pdg.lbl.gov). The printed PDG Book contains the Summary Tables and all review articles but no longer includes the detailed tables from the Particle Listings. A Booklet with the Summary Tables and abbreviated versions of some of the review articles is also available.

  • Global change effects on plant communities are magnified by time and the number of global change factors imposed
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 116:36, s. 17867-17873
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accurate prediction of community responses to global change drivers (GCDs) is critical given the effects of biodiversity on ecosystem services. There is consensus that human activities are driving species extinctions at the global scale, but debate remains over whether GCDs are systematically altering local communities worldwide. Across 105 experiments that included over 400 experimental manipulations, we found evidence for a lagged response of herbaceous plant communities to GCDs caused by shifts in the identities and relative abundances of species, often without a corresponding difference in species richness. These results provide evidence that community responses are pervasive across a wide variety of GCDs on long-term temporal scales and that these responses increase in strength when multiple GCDs are simultaneously imposed.Global change drivers (GCDs) are expected to alter community structure and consequently, the services that ecosystems provide. Yet, few experimental investigations have examined effects of GCDs on plant community structure across multiple ecosystem types, and those that do exist present conflicting patterns. In an unprecedented global synthesis of over 100 experiments that manipulated factors linked to GCDs, we show that herbaceous plant community responses depend on experimental manipulation length and number of factors manipulated. We found that plant communities are fairly resistant to experimentally manipulated GCDs in the short term (<10 y). In contrast, long-term (≥10 y) experiments show increasing community divergence of treatments from control conditions. Surprisingly, these community responses occurred with similar frequency across the GCD types manipulated in our database. However, community responses were more common when 3 or more GCDs were simultaneously manipulated, suggesting the emergence of additive or synergistic effects of multiple drivers, particularly over long time periods. In half of the cases, GCD manipulations caused a difference in community composition without a corresponding species richness difference, indicating that species reordering or replacement is an important mechanism of community responses to GCDs and should be given greater consideration when examining consequences of GCDs for the biodiversity–ecosystem function relationship. Human activities are currently driving unparalleled global changes worldwide. Our analyses provide the most comprehensive evidence to date that these human activities may have widespread impacts on plant community composition globally, which will increase in frequency over time and be greater in areas where communities face multiple GCDs simultaneously.

  • "Building Block Picture" of the Electronic Structure of Aqueous Cysteine Derived from Resonant Inelastic Soft X-ray Scattering
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry B. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-6106 .- 1520-5207. ; 118:46, s. 13142-13150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electronic structure of the amino acid l-cysteine in an aqueous environment was studied using resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering (RIXS) in a 2D map representation and analyzed in the framework of a building block approach. The element selectivity of RIXS allows a local investigation of the electronic structure of the three functional groups of cysteine, namely, the carboxyl, amino, and thiol groups, by measuring at the O K, N K, and S L-2,L-3 edges, respectively. Variation of the pH value allows an investigation of molecules with protonated and deprotonated functional groups, which can then be compared with simple reference molecules that represent the isolated functional groups. We find that such building blocks can provide an excellent description of X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and RIXS spectra, but only if all nearest-neighbor atoms are included. This finding is analogous to the building block principle commonly used in X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The building blocks show a distinct spectral character (fingerprint) and allow a comprehensive interpretation of the cysteine spectra. This simple approach opens the path to investigate the electronic structure of more complex biological molecules in aqueous solutions using XES and RIXS.

  • Ultrafast Proton Dynamics in Aqueous Amino Acid Solutions Studied by Resonant Inelastic Soft X-ray Scattering
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry B. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-6106 .- 1520-5207. ; 116:46, s. 13757-13764
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering (RIXS) has been used to study the electronic structure of glycine and lysine in aqueous solution. Upon variation of the pH value of the solution from acidic to basic, major changes of the nitrogen K edge RIXS data are observed for both amino acids, which are associated with the protonation and deprotonation of the amino groups. The experimental results are compared with simulations based on density functional theory, yielding a detailed understanding of the spectral changes, as well as insights into the ultrafast proton dynamics in the intermediate core-excited/ionized state of the RIXS process.

  • Fueling innovation management research : Future directions and five forward‐looking paths
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Product Innovation Management. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1540-5885 .- 0737-6782. ; 41:5, s. 893-948
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research about innovation management explores how the future is created—who is creating it (organizations, collaborations, etc.), for what aims (customer satisfaction, market performance, etc.), and with what broader effects (social, environmental, etc.). With this extended essay, we explore the potential futures of innovation management research in three ways. First, we briefly review the history of past research agendas and priorities published in the Journal of Product Innovation Management (JPIM), highlighting three broad topic areas (technological, social/environmental, and organizational) that have emerged over time and their potential disruptive implications for innovation management research. Second, we describe the outcome of a gathering of leading scholars in innovation management tasked with the challenge of identifying critical research paths for our field. This collaboration resulted in five “deep dive” essays into areas ripe for innovation management research in the years ahead: liquid innovation, artificial intelligence in innovation, business model innovation, public value innovation, and responsible innovation. Third, we reflect on this expansive effort and offer a discussion of implications (tensions, challenges, and opportunities) for future innovation management scholarship.

  • Results from a randomized trial of salvage chemotherapy followed by lestaurtinib for patients with FLT3 mutant AML in first relapse
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Blood. - : American Society of Hematology. - 1528-0020 .- 0006-4971. ; 117:12, s. 3294-3301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a randomized trial of therapy for FMS-like tyrosine kinase-3 (FLT3) mutant acute myeloid leukemia in first relapse, 224 patients received chemotherapy alone or followed by 80 mg of the FLT3 inhibitor lestaurtinib twice daily. Endpoints included complete remission or complete remission with incomplete platelet recovery (CR/CRp), overall survival, safety, and tolerability. Correlative studies included pharmacokinetics and analysis of in vivo FLT3 inhibition. There were 29 patients with CR/CRp in the lestaurtinib arm and 23 in the control arm (26% vs 21%; P = .35), and no difference in overall survival between the 2 arms. There was evidence of toxicity in the lestaurtinib-treated patients, particularly those with plasma levels in excess of 20 mu M. In the lestaurtinib arm, FLT3 inhibition was highly correlated with remission rate, but target inhibition on day 15 was achieved in only 58% of patients receiving lestaurtinib. Given that such a small proportion of patients on this trial achieved sustained FLT3 inhibition in vivo, any conclusions regarding the efficacy of combining FLT3 inhibition with chemotherapy are limited. Overall, lestaurtinib treatment after chemotherapy did not increase response rates or prolong survival of patients with FLT3 mutant acute myeloid leukemia in first relapse. This study is registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as #NCT00079482. (Blood. 2011;117(12): 3294-3301)

    • RNase P, an enzyme that contains both RNA and protein components, cleaves tRNA precursors to generate mature 5' termini. The catalytic activity of RNase P resides in the RNA component, with the protein cofactor affecting the rate of the cleavage reaction. The reaction is also influenced by the nature of the tRNA substrate.

  • Dietary Fibre Consensus from the International Carbohydrate Quality Consortium (ICQC)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nutrients. - : MDPI. - 2072-6643. ; 12:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dietary fibre is a generic term describing non-absorbed plant carbohydrates and small amounts of associated non-carbohydrate components. The main contributors of fibre to the diet are the cell walls of plant tissues, which are supramolecular polymer networks containing variable proportions of cellulose, hemicelluloses, pectic substances, and non-carbohydrate components, such as lignin. Other contributors of fibre are the intracellular storage oligosaccharides, such as fructans. A distinction needs to be made between intrinsic sources of dietary fibre and purified forms of fibre, given that the three-dimensional matrix of the plant cell wall confers benefits beyond fibre isolates. Movement through the digestive tract modifies the cell wall structure and may affect the interactions with the colonic microbes (e.g., small intestinally non-absorbed carbohydrates are broken down by bacteria to short-chain fatty acids, absorbed by colonocytes). These aspects, combined with the fibre associated components (e.g., micronutrients, polyphenols, phytosterols, and phytoestrogens), may contribute to the health outcomes seen with the consumption of dietary fibre. Therefore, where possible, processing should minimise the degradation of the plant cell wall structures to preserve some of its benefits. Food labelling should include dietary fibre values and distinguish between intrinsic and added fibre. Labelling may also help achieve the recommended intake of 14 g/1000 kcal/day.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nutrition Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases. - : Elsevier BV. - 1590-3729 .- 0939-4753. ; 25:9, s. 795-815
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and aims: The positive and negative health effects of dietary carbohydrates are of interest to both researchers and consumers. Methods: International experts on carbohydrate research held a scientific summit in Stresa, Italy, in June 2013 to discuss controversies surrounding the utility of the glycemic index (GI), glycemic load (GL) and glycemic response (GR). Results: The outcome was a scientific consensus statement which recognized the importance of postprandial glycemia in overall health, and the GI as a valid and reproducible method of classifying carbohydrate foods for this purpose. There was consensus that diets low in GI and GL were relevant to the prevention and management of diabetes and coronary heart disease, and probably obesity. Moderate to weak associations were observed for selected cancers. The group affirmed that diets low in GI and GL should always be considered in the context of diets otherwise understood as healthy, complementing additional ways of characterizing carbohydrate foods, such as fiber and whole grain content. Diets of low GI and GL were considered particularly important in individuals with insulin resistance. Conclusions: Given the high prevalence of diabetes and pre-diabetes worldwide and the consistency of the scientific evidence reviewed, the expert panel confirmed an urgent need to communicate information on GI and GL to the general public and health professionals, through channels such as national dietary guidelines, food composition tables and food labels.

  • Unlocking Pre-1850 Instrumental Meteorological Records : A Global Inventory
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of The American Meteorological Society - (BAMS). - 0003-0007 .- 1520-0477. ; 100:12, s. ES389-ES413
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Instrumental meteorological measurements from periods prior to the start of national weather services are designated early instrumental data. They have played an important role in climate research as they allow daily to decadal variability and changes of temperature, pressure, and precipitation, including extremes, to be addressed. Early instrumental data can also help place twenty-first century climatic changes into a historical context such as defining preindustrial climate and its variability. Until recently, the focus was on long, high-quality series, while the large number of shorter series (which together also cover long periods) received little to no attention. The shift in climate and climate impact research from mean climate characteristics toward weather variability and extremes, as well as the success of historical reanalyses that make use of short series, generates a need for locating and exploring further early instrumental measurements. However, information on early instrumental series has never been electronically compiled on a global scale. Here we attempt a worldwide compilation of metadata on early instrumental meteorological records prior to 1850 (1890 for Africa and the Arctic). Our global inventory comprises information on several thousand records, about half of which have not yet been digitized (not even as monthly means), and only approximately 20% of which have made it to global repositories. The inventory will help to prioritize data rescue efforts and can be used to analyze the potential feasibility of historical weather data products. The inventory will be maintained as a living document and is a first, critical, step toward the systematic rescue and reevaluation of these highly valuable early records. Additions to the inventory are welcome.

  • Clinical presentation, treatment and outcome of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in Far North Queensland Australian adults
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nephrology. - : Wiley. - 1320-5358. ; 22:7, s. 520-530
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AimThe aim is to describe the clinical features, treatment and outcomes in Australian adults with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and identify predictors of disease progression and all-cause mortality. MethodsThe study included all patients with biopsy confirmed focal segmental glomerulosclerosis between January 1997 and June 2014 at participating hospitals. Clinical factors, histopathological findings, biochemical markers and treatments were analysed and potential predictors of doubling serum creatinine, end stage kidney disease or death identified. ResultsA total of 98 patients were included with a median follow up of 4.3years. Thirty-four (35%) patients were Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis not-otherwise-specified was the most common variant. Seventeen (59%) patients initially treated with immunosuppression experienced an improvement in renal function. At the end of follow up, 43 (44%) patients had progressed to the composite outcome. Baseline tubulointerstitial scarring and lower haemoglobin predicted shorter time to doubling serum creatinine. Dual diagnosis, higher serum creatinine, lower estimated glomerular filtration rate and doubling creatinine were associated with shorter time to end stage kidney disease with remission the only protective factor. Age was the only variable associated with all-cause mortality. ConclusionFocal segmental glomerulosclerosis holds serious implications for patients. Concomitant diabetic nephropathy, higher serum creatinine and lower estimated glomerular filtration rate at renal biopsy were associated with poorer renal prognosis. Indigenous people had a female predominance and are over-represented in relation to their population size, however, were not associated with poorer prognosis. Remission was the only modifiable variable and thus should be at the forefront of patient management goals and future studies.
