  • THE HIGHLY ENERGETIC EXPANSION OF SN 2010bh ASSOCIATED WITH GRB 100316D
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 753:1, s. 67-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the spectroscopic and photometric evolution of the nearby (z = 0.059) spectroscopically confirmed Type Ic supernova, SN 2010bh, associated with the soft, long-duration gamma-ray burst (X-ray flash) GRB 100316D. Intensive follow-up observations of SN 2010bh were performed at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) using the X-shooter and FORS2 instruments. Thanks to the detailed temporal coverage and the extended wavelength range (3000-24800 angstrom), we obtained an unprecedentedly rich spectral sequence among the hypernovae, making SN 2010bh one of the best studied representatives of this SN class. We find that SN 2010bh has a more rapid rise to maximum brightness (8.0 +/- 1.0 rest-frame days) and a fainter absolute peak luminosity (L-bol approximate to 3 x 10(42) erg s(-1)) than previously observed SN events associated with GRBs. Our estimate of the ejected Ni-56 mass is 0.12 +/- 0.02 M-circle dot. From the broad spectral features, we measure expansion velocities up to 47,000 km s(-1), higher than those of SNe 1998bw (GRB 980425) and 2006aj (GRB 060218). Helium absorption lines He I lambda 5876 and He I 1.083 mu m, blueshifted by similar to 20,000-30,000 km s(-1) and similar to 28,000-38,000 km s(-1), respectively, may be present in the optical spectra. However, the lack of coverage of the He I 2.058 mu m line prevents us from confirming such identifications. The nebular spectrum, taken at similar to 186 days after the explosion, shows a broad but faint [O I] emission at 6340 angstrom. The light curve shape and photospheric expansion velocities of SN 2010bh suggest that we witnessed a highly energetic explosion with a small ejected mass (E-k approximate to 10(52) erg and M-ej approximate to 3 M-circle dot). The observed properties of SN 2010bh further extend the heterogeneity of the class of GRB SNe.

  • Gaia17biu/SN 2017egm in NGC 3191 : The Closest Hydrogen-poor Superluminous Supernova to Date Is in a Normal, Massive, Metal-rich Spiral Galaxy
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 853:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I) have been predominantly found in low-metallicity, star-forming dwarf galaxies. Here we identify Gaia17biu/SN 2017egm as an SLSN-I occurring in a normal spiral galaxy (NGC 3191) in terms of stellar mass (several times 10(10) M-circle dot) and metallicity (roughly solar). At redshift z = 0.031, Gaia17biu is also the lowest-redshift SLSN-I to date, and the absence of a larger population of SLSNe-I in dwarf galaxies of similar redshift suggests that metallicity is likely less important to the production of SLSNe-I than previously believed. With the smallest distance and highest apparent brightness for an SLSN-I, we are able to study Gaia17biu in unprecedented detail. Its pre-peak near-ultraviolet to optical color is similar to that of Gaia16apd and among the bluest observed for an SLSN-I, while its peak luminosity (M-g = -21 mag) is substantially lower than that of Gaia16apd. Thanks to the high signal-to-noise ratios of our spectra, we identify several new spectroscopic features that may help to probe the properties of these enigmatic explosions. We detect polarization at the similar to 0.5% level that is not strongly dependent on wavelength, suggesting a modest, global departure from spherical symmetry. In addition, we put the tightest upper limit yet on the radio luminosity of an SLSN-I with < 5.4 x 10(26) erg s(-1) Hz(-1) at 10 GHz, which is almost a factor of 40 better than previous upper limits and one of the few measured at an early stage in the evolution of an SLSN-I. This limit largely rules out an association of this SLSN-I with known populations of gamma-ray-burst-like central engines.

  • Type Ibn Supernovae Show Photometric Homogeneity and Spectral Diversity at Maximum Light
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 836:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Type Ibn supernovae (SNe) are a small yet intriguing class of explosions whose spectra are characterized by low-velocity helium emission lines with little to no evidence for hydrogen. The prevailing theory has been that these are the core-collapse explosions of very massive stars embedded in helium-rich circumstellar material (CSM). We report optical observations of six new SNe Ibn: PTF11rfh, PTF12ldy, iPTF14aki, iPTF15ul, SN 2015G, and iPTF15akq. This brings the sample size of such objects in the literature to 22. We also report new data, including a near-infrared spectrum, on the Type Ibn SN 2015U. In order to characterize the class as a whole, we analyze the photometric and spectroscopic properties of the full Type Ibn sample. We find that, despite the expectation that CSM interaction would generate a heterogeneous set of light curves, as seen in SNe IIn, most Type Ibn light curves are quite similar in shape, declining at rates around 0.1 mag day(-1) during the first month after maximum light, with a few significant exceptions. Early spectra of SNe Ibn come in at least two varieties, one that shows narrow P Cygni lines and another dominated by broader emission lines, both around maximum light, which may be an indication of differences in the state of the progenitor system at the time of explosion. Alternatively, the spectral diversity could arise from viewing-angle effects or merely from a lack of early spectroscopic coverage. Together, the relative light curve homogeneity and narrow spectral features suggest that the CSM consists of a spatially confined shell of helium surrounded by a less dense extended wind.

  • Weak Mass Loss from the Red Supergiant Progenitor of the Type II SN 2021yja
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 935:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present high-cadence optical, ultraviolet (UV), and near-infrared data of the nearby (D approximate to 23 Mpc) Type II supernova (SN) 2021yja. Many Type II SNe show signs of interaction with circumstellar material (CSM) during the first few days after explosion, implying that their red supergiant (RSG) progenitors experience episodic or eruptive mass loss. However, because it is difficult to discover SNe early, the diversity of CSM configurations in RSGs has not been fully mapped. SN 2021yja, first detected within approximate to 5.4 hours of explosion, shows some signatures of CSM interaction (high UV luminosity and radio and x-ray emission) but without the narrow emission lines or early light-curve peak that can accompany CSM. Here we analyze the densely sampled early light curve and spectral series of this nearby SN to infer the properties of its progenitor and CSM. We find that the most likely progenitor was an RSG with an extended envelope, encompassed by low-density CSM. We also present archival Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the host galaxy of SN 2021yja, which allows us to place a stringent upper limit of less than or similar to 9 M-circle dot; on the progenitor mass. However, this is in tension with some aspects of the SN evolution, which point to a more massive progenitor. Our analysis highlights the need to consider progenitor structure when making inferences about CSM properties, and that a comprehensive view of CSM tracers should be made to give a fuller view of the last years of RSG evolution.

  • The Fast-evolving Type Ib Supernova SN 2015dj in NGC 7371
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 909:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the detailed optical evolution of a Type Ib SN 2015dj in NGC 7371, using data spanning up to similar to 170 days after discovery. SN 2015dj shares similarity in light-curve shape with SN 2007gr and peaks at M-V = -17.37 +/- 0.02 mag. Analytical modeling of the quasi bolometric light curve yields 0.06 +/- 0.01 M-circle dot of Ni-56, ejecta mass = M-ej = 1.4(-0.5)(+1.3) M-circle dot, and kinetic energy E-k = 0.7(-0.3)(+0.6) x 10(51) erg. The spectral features show a fast evolution and resemble those of spherically symmetric ejecta. The analysis of nebular phase spectral lines indicates a progenitor mass between 13-20 M-circle dot, suggesting a binary scenario.

  • A SPECTROSCOPICALLY NORMAL TYPE Ic SUPERNOVA FROM A VERY MASSIVE PROGENITOR
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The Astrophysical Journal Letters. - 2041-8205. ; 749:2, s. L28-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present observations of the Type Ic supernova (SN Ic) 2011bm spanning a period of about one year. The data establish that SN 2011bm is a spectroscopically normal SN Ic with moderately low ejecta velocities and with a very slow spectroscopic and photometric evolution (more than twice as slow as SN 1998bw). The Pan-STARRS1 retrospective detection shows that the rise time from explosion to peak was similar to 40 days in the R band. Through an analysis of the light curve and the spectral sequence, we estimate a kinetic energy of similar to 7-17 foe and a total ejected mass of similar to 7-17 M-circle dot, 5-10 M-circle dot of which is oxygen and 0.6-0.7 M-circle dot is Ni-56. The physical parameters obtained for SN 2011bm suggest that its progenitor was a massive star of initial mass 30-50 M-circle dot. The profile of the forbidden oxygen lines in the nebular spectra shows no evidence of a bi-polar geometry in the ejected material.

  • THE TYPE IIb SUPERNOVA 2011dh FROM A SUPERGIANT PROGENITOR
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 757:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A set of hydrodynamical models based on stellar evolutionary progenitors is used to study the nature of SN 2011dh. Our modeling suggests that a large progenitor star-with R similar to 200 R-circle dot-is needed to reproduce the early light curve (LC) of SN 2011dh. This is consistent with the suggestion that the yellow super-giant star detected at the location of the supernova (SN) in deep pre-explosion images is the progenitor star. From the main peak of the bolometric LC and expansion velocities, we constrain the mass of the ejecta to be approximate to 2 M-circle dot, the explosion energy to be E = (6-10) x 10(50) erg, and the Ni-56 mass to be approximately 0.06 M-circle dot. The progenitor star was composed of a helium core of 3-4 M-circle dot and a thin hydrogen-rich envelope of approximate to 0.1M(circle dot) with a main-sequence mass estimated to be in the range of 12-15 M-circle dot. Our models rule out progenitors with helium-core masses larger than 8 M-circle dot, which correspond to M-ZAMS greater than or similar to 25M(circle dot). This suggests that a single star evolutionary scenario for SN 2011dh is unlikely.

  • ASASSN-15nx : A Luminous Type II Supernova with a Perfect Linear Decline
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 862:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report a luminous Type II supernova, ASASSN-15nx, with a peak luminosity of M-v = -20 mag that is between those of typical core-collapse supernovae and super-luminous supernovae. The post-peak optical light curves show a long, linear decline with a steep slope of 2.5 mag (100 day)(-1) (i.e., an exponential decline in flux) through the end of observations at phase approximate to 260 day. In contrast, the light curves of hydrogen-rich supernovae (SNe II-P/L) always show breaks in their light curves at phase similar to 100 day, before settling onto Co-56 radioactive decay tails with a decline rate of about 1 mag (100 day)(-1). The spectra of ASASSN-15nx do not exhibit the narrow emission-line features characteristic of Type IIn SNe, which can have a wide variety of light-curve shapes usually attributed to strong interactions with a dense circumstellar medium (CSM). ASASSN-15nx has a number of spectroscopic peculiarities, including a relatively weak and triangular-shaped H alpha emission profile with no absorption component. The physical origin of these peculiarities is unclear, but the long and linear post-peak light curve without a break suggests a single dominant powering mechanism. Decay of a large amount of Ni-56 (M-Ni = 1.6 +/- 0.2 M-circle dot) can power the light curve of ASASSN-15nx, and the steep light-curve slope requires substantial gamma-ray escape from the ejecta, which is possible given a low-mass hydrogen envelope for the progenitor. Another possibility is strong CSM interactions powering the light curve, but the CSM needs to be sculpted to produce the unique light-curve shape and avoid producing SN IIn-like narrow emission lines.

  • ASASSN-18am/SN 2018gk : an overluminous Type IIb supernova from a massive progenitor
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 503:3, s. 3472-3491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ASASSN-18am/SN 2018gk is a newly discovered member of the rare group of luminous, hydrogen-rich supernovae (SNe) with a peak absolute magnitude of M-V approximate to -20 mag that is in between normal core-collapse SNe and superluminous SNe. These SNe show no prominent spectroscopic signatures of ejecta interacting with circumstellar material (CSM), and their powering mechanism is debated. ASASSN-18am declines extremely rapidly for a Type II SN, with a photospheric-phase decline rate of similar to 6.0 mag (100 d)(-1). Owing to the weakening of H I and the appearance of He I in its later phases, ASASSN-18am is spectroscopically a Type IIb SN with a partially stripped envelope. However, its photometric and spectroscopic evolution shows significant differences from typical SNe IIb. Using a radiative diffusion model, we find that the light curve requires a high synthesized Ni-56 mass M-Ni similar to 0.4 M-circle dot and ejecta with high kinetic energy E-kin = (7-10) x 10(51) erg. Introducing a magnetar central engine still requires M-Ni similar to 0.3 M-circle dot and E-kin = 3 x 10(51) erg. The high Ni-56 mass is consistent with strong iron-group nebular lines in its spectra, which are also similar to several SNe Ic-BL with high Ni-56 yields. The earliest spectrum shows 'flash ionization' features, from which we estimate a mass-loss rate of (M) over dot approximate to 2 x 10(-4 )M(circle dot) yr(-1). This wind density is too low to power the luminous light curve by ejecta-CSM interaction. We measure expansion velocities as high as 17 000 km s(-1) for H alpha, which is remarkably high compared to other SNe II. We estimate an oxygen core mass of 1.8-3.4 M-circle dot using the [O I] luminosity measured from a nebular-phase spectrum, implying a progenitor with a zero-age main-sequence mass of 19-26 M-circle dot.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Modern Physics D. - 0218-2718. ; 25:6
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent cosmic microwave background (CMB) data in temperature and polarization have reached high precision in estimating all the parameters that describe the current so-called standard cosmological model. Recent results about the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect from CMB anisotropies, galaxy surveys, and their cross-correlations are presented. Looking at fine signatures in the CMB, such as the lack of power at low multipoles, the primordial power spectrum (PPS) and the bounds on non-Gaussianities, complemented by galaxy surveys, we discuss inflationary physics and the generation of primordial perturbations in the early universe. Three important topics in particle physics, the bounds on neutrinos masses and parameters, on thermal axion mass and on the neutron lifetime derived from cosmological data are reviewed, with attention to the comparison with laboratory experiment results. Recent results from cosmic polarization rotation (CPR) analyses aimed at testing the Einstein equivalence principle (EEP) are presented. Finally, we discuss the perspectives of next radio facilities for the improvement of the analysis of future CMB spectral distortion experiments.

  • The Type IIn Supernova SN 2010bt : The Explosion of a Star in Outburst
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 860:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is well known that massive stars (M > 8M(circle dot)) evolve up to the collapse of the stellar core, resulting in most cases in a supernova (SN) explosion. Their heterogeneity is related mainly to different configurations of the progenitor star at the moment of the explosion and to their immediate environments. We present photometry and spectroscopy of SN. 2010bt, which was classified as a Type. IIn. SN from a spectrum obtained soon after discovery and was observed extensively for about 2 months. After the seasonal interruption owing to its proximity to the Sun, the SN was below the detection threshold, indicative of a rapid luminosity decline. We can identify the likely progenitor with a very luminous star (log L/L-circle dot approximate to 7) through comparison of Hubble Space Telescope images of the host galaxy prior to explosion with those of the SN obtained after maximum light. Such a luminosity is not expected for a quiescent star, but rather for a massive star in an active phase. This progenitor candidate was later confirmed via images taken in 2015 (similar to 5 yr post-discovery), in which no bright point source was detected at the SN position. Given these results and the SN behavior, we conclude that SN. 2010bt was likely a Type IIn SN and that its progenitor was a massive star that experienced an outburst shortly before the final explosion, leading to a dense H-rich circumstellar environment around the SN progenitor.

  • Detailed spectrophotometric analysis of the superluminous and fast evolving SN 2019neq
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 527:3, s. 6473-6494
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • SN 2019neq was a very fast evolving superluminous supernova. At a redshift z = 0.1059, its peak absolute magnitude was −21.5 ± 0.2 mag in g band. In this work, we present data and analysis from an extensive spectrophotometric follow-up campaign using multiple observational facilities. Thanks to a nebular spectrum of SN 2019neq, we investigated some of the properties of the host galaxy at the location of SN 2019neq and found that its metallicity and specific star formation rate are in a good agreement with those usually measured for SLSNe-I hosts. We then discuss the plausibility of the magnetar and the circumstellar interaction scenarios to explain the observed light curves, and interpret a nebular spectrum of SN 2019neq using published SUMO radiative-transfer models. The results of our analysis suggest that the spin-down radiation of a millisecond magnetar with a magnetic field B ≃ 6×1014 G could boost the luminosity of SN 2019neq.

  • HIGH-DENSITY CIRCUMSTELLAR INTERACTION IN THE LUMINOUS TYPE IIn SN 2010jl : THE FIRST 1100 DAYS
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 797:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based observations of the Type IIn supernova (SN) 2010jl are analyzed, including photometry and spectroscopy in the ultraviolet, optical, and near-IR bands, 26-1128 days after first detection. At maximum, the bolometric luminosity was similar to 3 x 10(43) erg s(-1) and even at 850 days exceeds 10(42) erg s(-1). A near-IR excess, dominating after 400 days, probably originates in dust in the circumstellar medium (CSM). The total radiated energy is greater than or similar to 6.5x10(50) erg, excluding the dust component. The spectral lines can be separated into one broad component that is due to electron scattering and one narrow with expansion velocity similar to 100 km s(-1) from the CSM. The broad component is initially symmetric around zero velocity but becomes blueshifted after similar to 50 days, while remaining symmetric about a shifted centroid velocity. Dust absorption in the ejecta is unlikely to explain the line shifts, and we attribute the shift instead to acceleration by the SN radiation. From the optical lines and the X-ray and dust properties, there is strong evidence for large-scale asymmetries in the CSM. The ultraviolet lines indicate CNO processing in the progenitor, while the optical shows a number of narrow coronal lines excited by the X-rays. The bolometric light curve is consistent with a radiative shock in an r(-2) CSM with a mass-loss rate of M similar to 0.1 M(circle dot)yr(-1). The total mass lost is greater than or similar to 3 M-circle dot. These properties are consistent with the SN expanding into a CSM characteristic of a luminous blue variable progenitor with a bipolar geometry. The apparent absence of nuclear processing is attributed to a CSM that is still opaque to electron scattering.

  • Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring autophagy
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Autophagy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1554-8635 .- 1554-8627. ; 8:4, s. 445-544
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2008 we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, research on this topic has continued to accelerate, and many new scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Accordingly, it is important to update these guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Various reviews have described the range of assays that have been used for this purpose. Nevertheless, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to measure autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. A key point that needs to be emphasized is that there is a difference between measurements that monitor the numbers or volume of autophagic elements (e.g., autophagosomes or autolysosomes) at any stage of the autophagic process vs. those that measure flux through the autophagy pathway (i.e., the complete process); thus, a block in macroautophagy that results in autophagosome accumulation needs to be differentiated from stimuli that result in increased autophagic activity, defined as increased autophagy induction coupled with increased delivery to, and degradation within, lysosomes (in most higher eukaryotes and some protists such as Dictyostelium) or the vacuole (in plants and fungi). In other words, it is especially important that investigators new to the field understand that the appearance of more autophagosomes does not necessarily equate with more autophagy. In fact, in many cases, autophagosomes accumulate because of a block in trafficking to lysosomes without a concomitant change in autophagosome biogenesis, whereas an increase in autolysosomes may reflect a reduction in degradative activity. Here, we present a set of guidelines for the selection and interpretation of methods for use by investigators who aim to examine macroautophagy and related processes, as well as for reviewers who need to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of papers that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a formulaic set of rules, because the appropriate assays depend in part on the question being asked and the system being used. In addition, we emphasize that no individual assay is guaranteed to be the most appropriate one in every situation, and we strongly recommend the use of multiple assays to monitor autophagy. In these guidelines, we consider these various methods of assessing autophagy and what information can, or cannot, be obtained from them. Finally, by discussing the merits and limits of particular autophagy assays, we hope to encourage technical innovation in the field.

  • SN 2017dio : A Type-Ic Supernova Exploding in a Hydrogen-rich Circumstellar Medium
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : American Astronomical Society. - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 854:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • SN 2017dio shows both spectral characteristics of a type-Ic supernova (SN) and signs of a hydrogen-rich circumstellar medium (CSM). Prominent, narrow emission lines of H and He are superposed on the continuum. Subsequent evolution revealed that the SN ejecta are interacting with the CSM. The initial SN Ic identification was confirmed by removing the CSM interaction component from the spectrum and comparing with known SNe Ic and, reversely, adding a CSM interaction component to the spectra of known SNe Ic and comparing them to SN 2017dio. Excellent agreement was obtained with both procedures, reinforcing the SN Ic classification. The light curve constrains the pre-interaction SN Ic peak absolute magnitude to be around M-g = -17.6 mag. No evidence of significant extinction is found, ruling out a brighter luminosity required by an SN Ia classification. These pieces of evidence support the view that SN 2017dio is an SN Ic, and therefore the first firm case of an SN Ic with signatures of hydrogen-rich CSM in the early spectrum. The CSM is unlikely to have been shaped by steady-state stellar winds. The mass loss of the progenitor star must have been intense, M similar to 0.02 (epsilon(H alpha)/0.01)(-1) (nu(wind)/500 km s(-1)) (nu(shock)/10,000 km s(-1))M--3(circle dot) yr(-1), peaking at a few decades before the SN. Such a high mass-loss rate might have been experienced by the progenitor through eruptions or binary stripping.

  • Observations of Type Ia Supernova 2014J for Nearly 900 Days and Constraints on Its Progenitor System
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 882:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present extensive ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry of the highly reddened, very nearby SN Ia 2014J in M82, covering the phases from 9 days before to about 900 days after the B-band maximum. SN 2014J is similar to other normal SNe Ia near the maximum light, but it shows flux excess in the B band in the early nebular phase. This excess flux emission can be due to light scattering by some structures of circum stellar materials located at a few 10(17) cm, consistent with a single-degenerate progenitor system or a double-degenerate progenitor system with mass outflows in the final evolution or magnetically driven winds around the binary system. At t similar to +300 to similar to +500 days past the B-band maximum, the light curve of SN 2014J shows a faster decline relative to the Ni-56 decay. That feature can be attributed to the significant weakening of the emission features around [Fe III] lambda 4700 and [Fe II] lambda 5200 rather than the positron escape, as previously suggested. Analysis of the HST images taken at t > 600 days confirms that the luminosity of SN 2014J maintains a flat evolution at the very late phase. Fitting the late-time pseudobolometric light curve with radioactive decay of Ni-56, Ni-57, and Fe-55 isotopes, we obtain the mass ratio Ni-57/Ni-56 as 0.035 +/- 0.011, which is consistent with the corresponding value predicted from the 2D and 3D delayed-detonation models. Combined with early-time analysis, we propose that delayed detonation through the single-degenerate scenario is most likely favored for SN 2014J.

  • Effects of the explosion asymmetry and viewing angle on the Type Ia supernova colour and luminosity calibration

  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phenomenological relations exist between the peak luminosity and other observables of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) that allow one to standardize their peak luminosities. However, several issues are yet to be clarified: SNe Ia show colour variations after the standardization. Also, individual SNe Ia can show residuals in their standardized peak absolute magnitude at the level of similar to 0.15 mag. In this paper, we explore how the colour and luminosity residual are related to the wavelength shift of nebular emission lines observed at greater than or similar to 150 d after the maximum light. A sample of 11 SNe Ia which likely suffer from little host extinction indicates a correlation (3.3 Sigma) between the peak B - V colour and the late-time emission-line shift. Furthermore, a nearly identical relation applies for a larger sample in which only three SNe with B - V greater than or similar to 0.2 mag are excluded. Following the interpretation that the late-time emission-line shift is a tracer of the viewing direction from which an off-centre explosion is observed, we suggest that the viewing direction is a dominant factor controlling the SN colour and that a large part of the colour variations is intrinsic, rather than due to the host extinction. We also investigate a relation between the peak luminosity residuals and the wavelength shift in nebular emission lines in a sample of 20 SNe. We thereby found a hint of a correlation (at similar to 1.6 Sigma level). The confirmation of this will require a future sample of SNe with more accurate distance estimates. Radiation transfer simulations for a toy explosion model where different viewing angles cause the late-time emission-line shift are presented, predicting a strong correlation between the colour and shift, and a weaker one for the luminosity residual.

  • MULTI-WAVELENGTH OBSERVATIONS OF SUPERNOVA 2011ei : TIME-DEPENDENT CLASSIFICATION OF TYPE IIb AND Ib SUPERNOVAE AND IMPLICATIONS FOR THEIR PROGENITORS
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 767:1, s. 71-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present X-ray, UV/optical, and radio observations of the stripped-envelope, core-collapse supernova (SN) 2011ei, one of the least luminous SNe IIb or Ib observed to date. Our observations begin with a discovery within similar to 1 day of explosion and span several months afterward. Early optical spectra exhibit broad, Type II-like hydrogen Balmer profiles that subside rapidly and are replaced by Type Ib-like He-rich features on a timescale of one week. High-cadence monitoring of this transition suggests absorption attributable to a high-velocity (greater than or similar to 12,000 km s(-1)) H-rich shell, which is likely present in many Type Ib events. Radio observations imply a shock velocity of v approximate to 0.13 c and a progenitor star average mass-loss rate of (M) over dot approximate to 1.4 x 10(-5) M-circle dot yr(-1) (assuming wind velocity v(w) = 10(3) km s(-1)). This is consistent with independent constraints from deep X-ray observations with Swift-XRT and Chandra. Overall, the multi-wavelength properties of SN 2011ei are consistent with the explosion of a lower-mass (3-4 M-circle dot), compact (R-* less than or similar to 1 x 10(11) cm), He-core star. The star retained a thin hydrogen envelope at the time of explosion, and was embedded in an inhomogeneous circumstellar wind suggestive of modest episodic mass loss. We conclude that SN 2011ei's rapid spectral metamorphosis is indicative of time-dependent classifications that bias estimates of the relative explosion rates for Type IIb and Ib objects, and that important information about a progenitor star's evolutionary state and mass loss immediately prior to SN explosion can be inferred from timely multi-wavelength observations.

  • Observations of the low-luminosity Type Iax supernova 2019gsc : a fainter clone of SN 2008ha?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 496:2, s. 1132-1143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the faint-and-fast evolving Type Iax supernova (SN) 2019gsc, extending from the time of g-band maximum until about 50 d post-maximum, when the object faded to an apparent r-band magnitude m(r )= 22.48 +/- 0.11 mag. SN 2019gsc reached a peak luminosity of only M-g = -13.58 +/- 0.15 mag, and is characterized with a post-maximum decline rate Delta m(15)(g) = 1.08 +/- 0.14 mag. These light curve parameters are comparable to those measured for SN 2008ha of M-g = -13.89 +/- 0.14 mag at peak and Delta m(15)(g) =1.80 +/- 0.03 mag. The spectral features of SN 2019gsc also resemble those of SN 2008ha at similar phases. This includes both the extremely low ejecta velocity at maximum, similar to 3000 km s(-1) and at late-time (phase +54 d) strong forbidden iron and cobalt lines as well as both forbidden and permitted calcium features. Furthermore, akin to SN 2008ha, the bolometric light curve of SN 2019gsc is consistent with the production of approximate to 0.003 +/- 0.001 M-circle dot of Ni-56. The explosion parameters, M-ej approximate to 0.13 M-circle dot and E-k approximate to 12 x 10(48) erg, are also similar to those inferred for SN 2008ha. We estimate a subsolar oxygen abundance for the host galaxy of SN 2019gsc (12 + log(10)(O/H) =8.10 +/- 0.18 dex), consistent with the equally metal-poor environment of SN 2008ha. Altogether, our data set for SN 2019gsc indicates that this is a member of a small but growing group of extreme SN Iax that includes SN 2008ha and SN 2010ae.

  • Evidence for type ia supernova diversity from ultraviolet observations with the hubble space telescope
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 749:2, s. 126-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy and photometry of four Type Ia supernovae (SNe 2004dt, 2004ef, 2005M, and 2005cf) obtained with the UV prism of the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. This data set provides unique spectral time series down to 2000 angstrom. Significant diversity is seen in the near-maximum-light spectra (similar to 2000-3500 angstrom) for this small sample. The corresponding photometric data, together with archival data from Swift Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope observations, provide further evidence of increased dispersion in the UV emission with respect to the optical. The peak luminositiesmeasured in the uvw1/F250W filter are found to correlate with the B-band light-curve shape parameter Delta m(15)(B), but with much larger scatter relative to the correlation in the broadband B band (e.g., similar to 0.4 mag versus similar to 0.2 mag for those with 0.8 mag < Delta m(15)(B) < 1.7 mag). SN 2004dt is found as an outlier of this correlation (at > 3 sigma), being brighter than normal SNe Ia such as SN 2005cf by similar to 0.9 mag and similar to 2.0 mag in the uvw1/F250W and uvm2/F220W filters, respectively. We show that different progenitor metallicity or line-expansion velocities alone cannot explain such a large discrepancy. Viewing-angle effects, such as due to an asymmetric explosion, may have a significant influence on the flux emitted in the UV region. Detailed modeling is needed to disentangle and quantify the above effects.

  • Observations of a Fast-expanding and UV-bright Type Ia Supernova SN 2013gs
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 872:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present extensive optical and ultraviolet (UV) observations of the type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2013gs discovered during the Tsinghua-NAOC Transient Survey. The photometric observations in the optical show that the light curves of SN 2013gs are similar to those of normal SNe Ia, with an absolute peak magnitude of M-B = -19.25 +/- 0.15 mag and a post-maximum decline rate Delta m(15)(B) = 1.00 +/- 0.05 mag. Gehrels Swift Ultr-Violet/Optical Telescope observations indicate that SN 2013gs shows unusually strong UV emission (especially in the uvw1 band) at around the maximum light (M-uvw1 similar to -18.9 mag). The SN is characterized by relatively weak Fe II III absorptions at similar to 5000 angstrom in the early spectra and a larger expansion velocity (v(Si) similar to 13,000 km s(-1) around the maximum light) than the normal-velocity SNe Ia. We discuss the relation between the uvw1 - v color and some observables, including Si II velocity, line strength of Si II lambda 6355 and Fe II/III lines, and Delta m(15)(B). Compared to other fast-expanding SNe Ia, SN 2013gs exhibits Si and Fe absorption lines with similar strength and bluer uvw1 - v color. We briefly discussed the origin of the observed UV dispersion of SNe Ia.

  • SN 2017egm : A Helium-rich Superluminous Supernova with Multiple Bumps in the Light Curves
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 949:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When discovered, SN 2017egm was the closest (redshift z = 0.03) hydrogen-poor superluminous supernova (SLSN-I) and a rare case that exploded in a massive and metal-rich galaxy. Thus, it has since been extensively observed and studied. We report spectroscopic data showing strong emission at around He i lambda 10830 and four He i absorption lines in the optical. Consequently, we classify SN 2017egm as a member of an emerging population of helium-rich SLSNe-I (i.e., SLSNe-Ib). We also present our late-time photometric observations. By combining them with archival data, we analyze high-cadence ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared light curves spanning from early pre-peak (similar to-20 days) to late phases (similar to+300 days). We obtain its most complete bolometric light curve, in which multiple bumps are identified. None of the previously proposed models can satisfactorily explain all main light-curve features, while multiple interactions between the ejecta and circumstellar material (CSM) may explain the undulating features. The prominent infrared excess with a blackbody luminosity of 10(7)-10(8) L (circle dot) detected in SN 2017egm could originate from the emission of either an echo of a pre-existing dust shell or newly formed dust, offering an additional piece of evidence supporting the ejecta-CSM interaction model. Moreover, our analysis of deep Chandra observations yields the tightest-ever constraint on the X-ray emission of an SLSN-I, amounting to an X-ray-to-optical luminosity ratio less than or similar to 10(-3) at late phases (similar to 100-200 days), which could help explore its close environment and central engine.
