  • Standardized evaluation methodology and reference database for evaluating coronary artery centerline extraction algorithms
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Medical Image Analysis. - : Elsevier. - 1361-8415 .- 1361-8423. ; 13:5, s. 701-714
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Efficiently obtaining a reliable coronary artery centerline from computed tomography angiography data is relevant in clinical practice. Whereas numerous methods have been presented for this purpose, up to now no standardized evaluation methodology has been published to reliably evaluate and compare the performance of the existing or newly developed coronary artery centerline extraction algorithms. This paper describes a standardized evaluation methodology and reference database for the quantitative evaluation of coronary artery centerline extraction algorithms. The contribution of this work is fourfold: (1) a method is described to create a consensus centerline with multiple observers, (2) well-defined measures are presented for the evaluation of coronary artery centerline extraction algorithms, (3) a database containing 32 cardiac CTA datasets with corresponding reference standard is described and made available, and (4) 13 coronary artery centerline extraction algorithms, implemented by different research groups, are quantitatively evaluated and compared. The presented evaluation framework is made available to the medical imaging community for benchmarking existing or newly developed coronary centerline extraction algorithms.

  • Human TYK2 deficiency: Mycobacterial and viral infections without hyper-IgE syndrome
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The Journal of experimental medicine. - : Rockefeller University Press. - 1540-9538 .- 0022-1007. ; 212:10, s. 1641-1662
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Autosomal recessive, complete TYK2 deficiency was previously described in a patient (P1) with intracellular bacterial and viral infections and features of hyper-IgE syndrome (HIES), including atopic dermatitis, high serum IgE levels, and staphylococcal abscesses. We identified seven other TYK2-deficient patients from five families and four different ethnic groups. These patients were homozygous for one of five null mutations, different from that seen in P1. They displayed mycobacterial and/or viral infections, but no HIES. All eight TYK2-deficient patients displayed impaired but not abolished cellular responses to (a) IL-12 and IFN-α/β, accounting for mycobacterial and viral infections, respectively; (b) IL-23, with normal proportions of circulating IL-17+ T cells, accounting for their apparent lack of mucocutaneous candidiasis; and (c) IL-10, with no overt clinical consequences, including a lack of inflammatory bowel disease. Cellular responses to IL-21, IL-27, IFN-γ, IL-28/29 (IFN-λ), and leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) were normal. The leukocytes and fibroblasts of all seven newly identified TYK2-deficient patients, unlike those of P1, responded normally to IL-6, possibly accounting for the lack of HIES in these patients. The expression of exogenous wild-type TYK2 or the silencing of endogenous TYK2 did not rescue IL-6 hyporesponsiveness, suggesting that this phenotype was not a consequence of the TYK2 genotype. The core clinical phenotype of TYK2 deficiency is mycobacterial and/or viral infections, caused by impaired responses to IL-12 and IFN-α/β. Moreover, impaired IL-6 responses and HIES do not appear to be intrinsic features of TYK2 deficiency in humans.

  • Chiral particle separation by a nonchiral microlattice
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 109:10, s. 100603-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We conceived a model experiment for a continuous separation strategy of chiral molecules (enantiomers) without the need of any chiral selector structure or derivatization agents: Microparticles that only differ by their chirality are shown to migrate along different directions when driven by a steady fluid flow through a square lattice of cylindrical posts. In accordance with our numerical predictions, the transport directions of the enantiomers depend very sensitively on the orientation of the lattice relative to the fluid flow.

  • Valveless fluid actuation : Liebau’s principle fully integrated on the microfluidic scale
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 17th International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences, MicroTAS 2013. ; , s. 182-184
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this contribution, we present the integration of valveless impedance pumping on the microfluidic scale. When a fluidic channel is periodically compressed at a point located asymmetrically with respect to an impedance mismatch in the system, an effective fluid flow is the result although no further moving parts such as valves are involved. Such an impedance mismatch could be e.g. a sudden reduction of the channel cross section. Four different types of impedance mismatches are being investigated concerning their response to different applied pressures and compression frequencies .A maximum fluid velocity of 25 }im/s and even a frequency dependent overall inversion of the flow direction could be observed.

  • Current Wildland Fire Patterns and Challenges in Europe : A Synthesis of National Perspectives
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Air, Soil and Water Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1178-6221. ; 14, s. 1-19
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Changes in climate, land use, and land management impact the occurrence and severity of wildland fires in many parts of the world. This is particularly evident in Europe, where ongoing changes in land use have strongly modified fire patterns over the last decades. Although satellite data by the European Forest Fire Information System provide large-scale wildland fire statistics across European countries, there is still a crucial need to collect and summarize in-depth local analysis and understanding of the wildland fire condition and associated challenges across Europe. This article aims to provide a general overview of the current wildland fire patterns and challenges as perceived by national representatives, supplemented by national fire statistics (2009–2018) across Europe. For each of the 31 countries included, we present a perspective authored by scientists or practitioners from each respective country, representing a wide range of disciplines and cultural backgrounds. The authors were selected from members of the COST Action “Fire and the Earth System: Science & Society” funded by the European Commission with the aim to share knowledge and improve communication about wildland fire. Where relevant, a brief overview of key studies, particular wildland fire challenges a country is facing, and an overview of notable recent fire events are also presented. Key perceived challenges included (1) the lack of consistent and detailed records for wildland fire events, within and across countries, (2) an increase in wildland fires that pose a risk to properties and human life due to high population densities and sprawl into forested regions, and (3) the view that, irrespective of changes in management, climate change is likely to increase the frequency and impact of wildland fires in the coming decades. Addressing challenge (1) will not only be valuable in advancing national and pan-European wildland fire management strategies, but also in evaluating perceptions (2) and (3) against more robust quantitative evidence.

  • SARS-CoV-2-related MIS-C: A key to the viral and genetic causes of Kawasaki disease?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Journal of experimental medicine. - : Rockefeller University Press. - 1540-9538 .- 0022-1007. ; 218:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) emerged in April 2020 in communities with high COVID-19 rates. This new condition is heterogenous but resembles Kawasaki disease (KD), a well-known but poorly understood and clinically heterogenous pediatric inflammatory condition for which weak associations have been found with a myriad of viral illnesses. Epidemiological data clearly indicate that SARS-CoV-2 is the trigger for MIS-C, which typically occurs about 1 mo after infection. These findings support the hypothesis of viral triggers for the various forms of classic KD. We further suggest that rare inborn errors of immunity (IEIs) altering the immune response to SARS-CoV-2 may underlie the pathogenesis of MIS-C in some children. The discovery of monogenic IEIs underlying MIS-C would shed light on its pathogenesis, paving the way for a new genetic approach to classic KD, revisited as a heterogeneous collection of IEIs to viruses.

  • A computational framework to explore the role of pulsatile haemodynamics on cerebral aneurysm development for patient-specific arterial geometries
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 6th World Congress of Biomechanics (WCB 2010). August 1-6, 2010 Singapore. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642145148 ; , s. 759-762
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A patient-specific cerebral aneurysm case was identified from clinical imaging data, and then segmented to create a geometrical representation of the aneurysm and surrounding vasculature. Using ANSYS ICEM CFD, the geometry was manipulated to remove the aneurysm and replace it with a short (initially cylindrical) section, which reconnected to the upstream and downstream arterial sections so that the surface gradients were continuous. This section is modelled using a realistic constitutive model of the arterial wall and is the location where the computational model of the aneurysm evolves. The aneurysm evolution FEA model is combined with detailed 3D haemodynamic solutions using ANSYS CFX. A rigid-wall approach is adopted to solve the flow, to derive the haemodynamic stimuli that act on the endothelial cell layer of the tissue. Additionally, the geometry of the aneurysm is obtained at systolic and diastolic pressures (using a quasi-static approach) to obtain the cyclic stretch experienced by the cells within the arterial wall. This is the first patient-specific model of cerebral aneurysm evolution to explicitly link growth and remodelling of arterial tissue to the local mechanical environment. It will provide the basis for investigating the role and importance of various mechanical stimuli on the progression of the disease and will yield improved understanding of the aetiology of cerebral aneurysm formation.

  • Athletes with valvular heart disease and competitive sports: a position statement of the Sport Cardiology Section of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European journal of preventive cardiology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2047-4881 .- 2047-4873. ; 28:14, s. 1569-1578
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article provides an overview of the recommendations from the Sports Cardiology section of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology on sports participation in individuals with valvular heart disease (VHD). The aim of these recommendations is to encourage regular physical activity including sports participation, with reasonable precaution to ensure a high level of safety for all affected individuals. Valvular heart disease is usually an age-related degenerative process, predominantly affecting individuals in their fifth decade and onwards. However, there is an increasing group of younger individuals with valvular defects. The diagnosis of cardiac disorders during routine cardiac examination often raises questions about on-going participation in competitive sport with a high dynamic or static component and the level of permissible physical effort during recreational exercise. Although the natural history of several valvular diseases has been reported in the general population, little is known about the potential influence of chronic intensive physical activity on valve function, left ventricular remodelling pulmonary artery pressure, and risk of arrhythmia. Due to the sparsity of data on the effects of exercise on VHD, the present document is largely based on clinical experience and expert opinion.
