  • Metamagnetism and soliton excitations in the modulated ferromagnetic Ising chain CoV2O6

    • We report a combination of physical property and neutron scattering measurements for polycrystalline samples of the one-dimensional spin-chain compound CoV2O6. Heat capacity measurements show that an effective S = 1/2 state is found at low temperatures and that magnetic fluctuations persist up to similar to 6T(N). Above T-N = 6.3 K, measurements of the magnetic susceptibility as a function of T and H show that the nearest-neighbor exchange is ferromagnetic. In the ordered state, we have discovered a crossover from a metamagnet with strong fluctuations between 5 K and T-N to a state with a 1/3 magnetization plateau at 2 < T < 5 K. We use neutron powder diffraction measurements to show that the antiferromagnetic state has incommensurate long-range order and inelastic time-of-flight neutron scattering to examine the magnetic fluctuations as a function of temperature. Above T-N, we find two broad bands between 3.5 and 5 meV and thermally activated low-energy features which correspond to transitions within these bands. These features show that the excitations are deconfined solitons rather than the static spin reversals predicted for a uniform ferromagnetic Ising spin chain. Below T-N, we find a ladder of states due to the confining effect of the internal field. A region of weak confinement below T-N, but above 5 K, is identified which may correspond to a crossover between two- and three-dimensional magnetic ordering.

    • The anticancer drug paclitaxel was encapsulated into a bio-nanocomposite formed by magnetic nanoparticles, chitosan and apatite. The aim of this drug carrier is to provide a new perspective against breast cancer. The dynamics of the pure and encapsulated drug were investigated in order to verify possible molecular changes caused by the encapsulation, as well as to follow which interactions may occur between paclitaxel and the composite. Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, inelastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering experiments were performed. These very preliminary results suggest the successful encapsulation of the drug.

  • Water dynamics in glass ionomer cements

    • Glass ionomer cements (GIC) are an alternative for preventive dentistry. However, these dental cements are complex systems where important motions related to the different states of the hydrogen atoms evolve in a confined porous structure. In this paper, we studied the water dynamics of two different liquids used to prepare either conventional or resin-modified glass ionomer cement. By combining thermal analysis with neutron scattering data we were able to relate the water structure in the liquids to the materials properties.

  • Colonization of plant roots by egg-parasitic and nematode-trapping fungi

    • • The ability of the nematode-trapping fungus Arthrobotrys oligospora and the nematode egg parasite Verticillium chlamydosporium to colonize barley (Hordeum vulgare) and tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum) roots was examined, together with capability of the fungi to induce cell wall modifications in root cells. • Chemotropism was studied using an agar plate technique. Root colonization was investigated with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, while compounds involved in fungus–plant interactions were studied histochemically. • Only A. oligospora responded chemotropically to roots. Colonization of barley and tomato by both fungi involved appressoria to facilitate epidermis penetration. V. chlamydosporium colonized tomato root epidermis and produced chlamydospores. Papillae, appositions and lignitubers ensheathing hyphae on tomato were also found. Phenolics (including lignin), protein deposits and callose were present in papillae in both hosts. Both fungi were still present in epidermal cells 3 months after inoculation. • Nematophagous fungi colonized endophytically monocotyledon and dicotyledon plant roots. Arthrobotrys oligospora seemed to be more aggressive than V. chlamydosporium on barley roots. Both fungi induced cell wall modifications, but these did not prevent growth. The response of root cells to colonization by nematophagous fungi may have profound implications in the performance of these organisms as biocontrol agents of plant parasitic nematodes.

  • Dynamical Accuracy of Water Models on Supercooling

    • Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are commonly used to explore the structural and dynamical properties of supercooled bulk water in the so-called "no man's land" (NML) (150-227 K), where crystallization occurs almost instantaneously. This approach has provided significant insight into experimentally inaccessible phenomena. In this paper, we compare the dynamics of simulations using one-, three-, and four-body water models to experimentally measured quasielastic neutron scattering spectra. We show that the agreement between simulated and experimental data becomes substantially worse with a decrease in temperature toward the deeply supercooled regime. It was found that it is mainly the nature of the local dynamics that is poorly reproduced, as opposed to the macroscopic properties such as the diffusion coefficient. This strongly implies that the molecular mechanism describing the water dynamics is poorly captured in the MD models, and simulated structural and dynamical properties of supercooled water in NML must be interpreted with care.

    • Why in a barren and hot desert, clays can contain a significant fraction of water? Why does concrete crack? How can we demonstrate that complexation of a drug does not alter its conformation in a way that affects its functionality? In this paper we present results on various studies using Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering aimed at clarifying these questions. To allow for a better understanding of neutron scattering, a brief introduction to the basics of its theory is presented. Following the theoretical part, experimental results dealing with the effects of confinement on the water dynamics caused by the interfaces in clays and the nano- and micro-pores of concrete are reviewed in detail. At the end, recent Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering investigations on the complexation of the local anesthetics Bupivacaine (BVC.HCl, C18H28N20.HCl.H2O) and Ropivacaine (RVC.HCl, C17H26N20.HCl.H2O) into the cyclic beta-cyclodextrin oligosaccharide are presented. To conclude, the perspectives that the European Spallation Source brings to this subject are discussed.

  • Probing Water Mobility in Human Dentine with Neutron Spectroscopy

    • The aim of this study was to investigate hydrogen mobility within innate and demineralized human dentine. Dentine sections from extracted human molars, demineralized or not, were analyzed by combining neutron spectroscopy with thermal analysis. For the thermal analysis of the samples, differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis, coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, were performed. The hydrogen dynamics of water, collagen, and hydroxyl groups present in the samples were investigated via neutron spectroscopy. From the mass loss observed from the thermogravimetric analysis curves up to 600 °C, the same amount of organic content is identified in the samples. From the differential scanning calorimetry curves, a higher change in enthalpy associated with the denaturation of collagen is registered in the demineralized dentine; that is, a structural change occurs in the collagen subsequent to demineralization. Since the intensity measured by neutron spectroscopy is dominated by the signal from hydrogen, in our samples—coming mostly from the bulk-like and loosely bound water as well as from the collagen itself—higher proton mobility within the demineralized dentine was detected when compared with innate dentine. In the demineralized dentine, this proton mobility amounts to 80%, while the remaining hydrogen accounts for a combination of 1) structural hydroxyls, as a result of the incomplete dissolution of the mineral phase by acid etching, and 2) hydrogen tightly bound in the collagen structure. By combining neutron spectroscopy with the calorimetry data, our findings support the idea that hydroxyapatite protects the collagen in innate dentine. Demineralized dentine, however, acts as a sponge where free bulk-like water is trapped.

    • The most common cancer treatments currently available are radio- and chemo-therapy. These therapies have, however, drawbacks, such as, the reduction in quality of life and the low efficiency of radiotherapy in cases of multiple metastases. To lessen these effects, we have encapsulated an anti-cancer drug into a biocompatible matrix. In-vitro assays indicate that this bio-nanocomposite is able to interact and cause morphological changes in cancer cells. Meanwhile, no alterations were observed in monocytes and fibroblasts, indicating that this system might carry the drug in living organisms with reduced clearance rate and toxicity. X-rays and neutrons were used to investigate the carrier structure, as well as to assess the drug mobility within the bio-nanocomposite. From these unique data we show that partial mobility restriction of active groups of the drug molecule suggests why this carrier design is potentially safer to healthy cells.

    • Several U-based intermetallic compounds (UCoGe, UNiGe with the TiNiSi structure type and UNiAl with the ZrNiAl structure type) and their hydrides were studied from the point of view of compressibility and thermal expansion. Confronted with existing data for the compounds with the ZrNiAl structure type a common pattern emerges. The direction of the U-U bonds with participation of the 5f states is distinctly the "soft" crystallographic direction, exhibiting also the highest coefficient of linear thermal expansion. The finding leads to an apparent paradox: the closer the U atoms are together in a particular direction the better they can be additionally compressed together by applied hydrostatic pressure.
