    • Abstract in UndeterminedObjective To investigate acute posttraumatic reactions and forms of coping to the September 11 attack. Method A Web TV nationwide, representative sample of individuals 13 years or older (N=3134) was evaluated within three weeks of the attack. Measures included the SASRQ, the brief version of the COPE, and questions about demographics and attitudes toward the attackers. Results Residents of New York City, women, young adults (but not teens), and people recently immigrated into the country experienced more distress about the attack. There was a positive linear association between hours of watching TV news related to the attack and distress, and a small positive association between hostility toward the perpetrators, TV watching, and distress. Income, religion, education, and ethnicity did not have an effect on distress. Maladaptive coping strategies and TV watching explained considerably more variance than did demographics. Conclusions Reactions to acute trauma seem to depend on the lack of appropriate coping strategies. The curvilinear relationship between age and posttraumatic distress urges caution when interpreting previous findings about age and posttraumatic reactions. The association between media exposure, coping styles, and acute distress among teens extends previous findings and deserves further investigation.

  • Anomalous experiences are more prevalent among highly suggestible individuals who are also highly dissociative*
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Cognitive Neuropsychiatry. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1354-6805 .- 1464-0619. ; 25:3, s. 179-189
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Predictive coding models propose that high hypnotic suggestibility confers a predisposition to hallucinate due to an elevated propensity to weight perceptual beliefs (priors) over sensory evidence. Multiple lines of research corroborate this prediction and demonstrate a link between hypnotic suggestibility and proneness to anomalous perceptual states. However, such effects might be moderated by dissociative tendencies, which seem to account for heterogeneity in high hypnotic suggestibility. We tested the prediction that the prevalence of anomalous experiences would be greater among highly suggestible individuals who are also highly dissociative. Methods: We compared high and low dissociative highly suggestible participants and low suggestible controls on multiple psychometric measures of anomalous experiences. Results: High dissociative highly suggestible participants reliably reported greater anomalous experiences than low dissociative highly suggestible participants and low suggestible controls, who did not significantly differ from each other. Conclusions: These results suggest a greater predisposition to experience anomalous perceptual states among high dissociative highly suggestible individuals.

  • Acute reactions to trauma and psychotherapy: A multidisciplinary and international perspective
  • 2005
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This unique single source combines cutting-edge research analysis with practical advice for clinicians and researchers dealing with reactions to trauma. In this well-referenced book, seasoned researchers and clinicians share their expertise on diagnosis and evaluation, risk and process factors, and prevention and early intervention. In addition to an essential overview of the state of the literature on acute reactions to trauma, Acute Reactions to Trauma and Psychotherapy: A Multidisciplinary and International Perspective presents immediately useful clinical considerations and interventions that are effective in practice with children and adults and recommends directions for further research.

  • Should conversion disorder be reclassified as a dissociative disorder in DSM-V?
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Psychosomatics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0033-3182. ; 48:5, s. 369-378
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pseudoneurological symptoms (i.e., conversion disorder), historically subsumed within the "hysteria" concept alongside phenomena such as psychogenic amnesia and multiple personality disorder have been classified as somatoform disorders since DSM-III. Since then, there have been repeated calls to reclassify conversion disorder with the dissociative disorders, as in ICD-10. The authors review issues such as the high correlations between pseudoneurological and dissociative symptoms, the high rates of trauma reported for both groups, and the position that these phenomena share underlying processes. Although reintegrating pseudoneurological symptoms with the dissociative disorders is not without complications, there is a strong case for such a reclassification.

  • Dissociation and its biological and clinical associations in functional neurological disorder: : systematic review and meta-analysis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: BJ Psych Open. - 2056-4724. ; 9:e2, s. 1-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundStudies have reported elevated rates of dissociative symptoms and comorbid dissociative disorders in functional neurological disorder (FND); however, a comprehensive review is lacking.AimsTo systematically review the severity of dissociative symptoms and prevalence of comorbid dissociative disorders in FND and summarise their biological and clinical associations.MethodWe searched Embase, PsycInfo and MEDLINE up to June 2021, combining terms for FND and dissociation. Studies were eligible if reporting dissociative symptom scores or rates of comorbid dissociative disorder in FND samples. Risk of bias was appraised using modified Newcastle–Ottawa criteria. The findings weresynthesised qualitatively and dissociative symptom scores were included in a meta-analysis (PROSPERO CRD42020173263).ResultsSeventy-five studies were eligible (FND n = 3940; control n = 3073), most commonly prospective case–control studies (k = 54). Dissociative disorders were frequently comorbid in FND. Psychoform dissociation was elevated in FND compared with healthy (g = 0.90, 95% CI 0.66–1.14, I2 = 70%) and neurologicalcontrols (g = 0.56, 95% CI 0.19–0.92, I2 = 67%). Greater psychoform dissociation was observed in FND samples with seizure symptoms versus healthy controls (g = 0.94, 95% CI 0.65–1.22, I2 = 42%) and FND samples with motor symptoms (g = 0.40, 95% CI −0.18 to 1.00, I2 = 54%). Somatoform dissociation was elevated in FND versus healthy controls (g = 1.80, 95% CI 1.25–2.34,I2 = 75%). Dissociation in FND was associated with more severe functional symptoms, worse quality of life and brain alterations.ConclusionsOur findings highlight the potential clinical utility of assessing patients with FND for dissociative symptomatology. However, fewer studies investigated FND samples with motor symptoms and heterogeneity between studies and risk of bias were high. Rigorous investigation of the prevalence, features and mechanistic relevance of dissociation in FND is needed.
