  • Overview of the FTU results
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 62:4
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the 2018 IAEA FEC Conference, FTU operations have been devoted to several experiments covering a large range of topics, from the investigation of the behaviour of a liquid tin limiter to the runaway electrons mitigation and control and to the stabilization of tearing modes by electron cyclotron heating and by pellet injection. Other experiments have involved the spectroscopy of heavy metal ions, the electron density peaking in helium doped plasmas, the electron cyclotron assisted start-up and the electron temperature measurements in high temperature plasmas. The effectiveness of the laser induced breakdown spectroscopy system has been demonstrated and the new capabilities of the runaway electron imaging spectrometry system for in-flight runaways studies have been explored. Finally, a high resolution saddle coil array for MHD analysis and UV and SXR diamond detectors have been successfully tested on different plasma scenarios.

  • The n_TOF facility at CERN
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: 16th Varenna Conference on Nuclear Reaction Mechanisms (NRM2023). - : EDP Sciences. - 9782759891245
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The neutron Time-of-Flight facility (n_TOF) is an innovative facility operative since 2001 at CERN, with three experimental areas. In this paper the n_TOF facility will be described, together with the upgrade of the facility during the Long Shutdown 2 at CERN. The main features of the detectors used for capture fission cross section measurements will be presented with perspectives for the future measurements.

  • MBGEM : a stack of borated GEM detector for high efficiency thermal neutron detection
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The European Physical Journal Plus. - : SPRINGER HEIDELBERG. - 2190-5444. ; 136:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new position-sensitive thermal neutron detector based on boron-coated converters has been developed as an alternative to todays standard -based technology for application to thermal neutron scattering. The key elements of the development are the boron-coated GEM foils (Sauli in Nucl Instrum Methods Phys Res Sect A Accel Spectrom Detect Assoc Equip 386:531, 1997) that are used as a multi-layer neutron converter via the reaction together with an efficient collection of the produced secondary electrons. This paper reports the test performed on a 3 layers converter prototype coupled to a GEMPix detector (Murtas in Radiat Meas 138:106421, 2020), carried out in order to study the possibility to produce a large-scale multi-layer neutron detector capable to reach high detection efficiency with high spatial resolution and able to sustain the high neutron flux expected in the new neutron spallation source under development like the ESS.

  • Physical-chemical characterization of a GEM side-on B-10-based thermal neutron detector and analysis of its neutron diffraction performances
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 906, s. 83-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The synergic interplay between nuclear physics, detector technology and solid state and surface sciences is a fundamental aspect of the development of new neutron detection devices. The synthesis technique and the physical-chemical properties of the B4C films used as a neutron-to-charged particle converter are described in relation to the GEM side-on thermal neutron detector. Neutron detection is performed allowing scattered neutrons to be converted into charged particles by means of a series of sheets covered by B-10-enriched boron carbide (B4C) layers placed along their flight path inside the detector. The extremely interesting performance shown by the detector in neutron diffraction measurements at the ISIS spallation neutron sources are discussed and related to the chemical-physical properties of the converting layers.

  • Results of the first user program on the HOmogeneous Thermal NEutron Source HOTNES (ENEA/INFN)
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 1748-0221. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The HOmogeneous Thermal NEutron Source (HOTNES) is a new type of thermal neutron irradiation assembly developed by the ENEA-INFN collaboration. The facility is fully characterized in terms of neutron field and dosimetric quantities, by either computational and experimental methods. This paper reports the results of the first "HOTNES users program", carried out in 2016, and covering a variety of thermal neutron active detectors such as scintillators, solid-state, single crystal diamond and gaseous detectors.

  • Twenty-three unsolved problems in hydrology (UPH) - a community perspective
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Hydrological Sciences Journal. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0262-6667 .- 2150-3435. ; 64:10, s. 1141-1158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is the outcome of a community initiative to identify major unsolved scientific problems in hydrology motivated by a need for stronger harmonisation of research efforts. The procedure involved a public consultation through online media, followed by two workshops through which a large number of potential science questions were collated, prioritised, and synthesised. In spite of the diversity of the participants (230 scientists in total), the process revealed much about community priorities and the state of our science: a preference for continuity in research questions rather than radical departures or redirections from past and current work. Questions remain focused on the process-based understanding of hydrological variability and causality at all space and time scales. Increased attention to environmental change drives a new emphasis on understanding how change propagates across interfaces within the hydrological system and across disciplinary boundaries. In particular, the expansion of the human footprint raises a new set of questions related to human interactions with nature and water cycle feedbacks in the context of complex water management problems. We hope that this reflection and synthesis of the 23 unsolved problems in hydrology will help guide research efforts for some years to come.

  • Neutron diffraction measurements on a reference metallic sample with a high-efficiency GEM side-on B-10-based thermal neutron detector
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Europhysics letters. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0295-5075 .- 1286-4854. ; 121:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The upgraded version of the GEM side-on thermal neutron detector was successfully tested in a neutron diffraction experiment on a reference sample using the INES diffractometer at the ISIS spallation neutron source, UK. The performance of the new (B4C)-B-10-based detector is compared to that of a standard He-3 tube, operating at the instrument as a part of the detectors assembly. The results show that the upgraded detector has a better resolution and an efficiency of the same order of magnitude of a He-3-based detector. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2018
