  • Getting the measure of eutrophication in the Baltic Sea: towards improved assessment principles and methods
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Biogeochemistry. - 0168-2563. ; 106:2, s. 137-156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The eutrophication status of the entire Baltic Sea is classified using a multi-metric indicator-based assessment tool. A total of 189 areas are assessed using indicators where information on reference conditions (RefCon), and acceptable deviation (AcDev) from reference condition could be combined with national monitoring data from the period 2001–2006. Most areas (176) are classified as ‘affected by eutrophication’ and only two open water areas and 11 coastal areas are classified as ‘unaffected by eutrophication’. The classification is made by application of the recently developed HELCOM Eutrophication Assessment Tool (HEAT), which is described in this paper. The use of harmonized assessment principles and the HEAT tool allows for direct comparisons between different parts of the Baltic Sea despite variations in monitoring activities. The impaired status of 176 areas is directly related to nutrient enrichment and elevated loads from upstream catchments. Baltic Sea States have implemented nutrient management strategies since years which have reduced nutrient inputs. However, eutrophication is still a major problem for large parts of the Baltic Sea. The 2007 Baltic Sea Action Plan is projected to further reduce nutrient inputs aiming for a Baltic Sea unaffected by eutrophication by 2021.

  • Past abrupt changes, tipping points and cascading impacts in the Earth system
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Geoscience. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1752-0894 .- 1752-0908. ; 14:8, s. 550-558
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A synthesis of intervals of rapid climatic change evident in the geological record reveals some of the Earth system processes and tipping points that could lead to similar events in the future. The geological record shows that abrupt changes in the Earth system can occur on timescales short enough to challenge the capacity of human societies to adapt to environmental pressures. In many cases, abrupt changes arise from slow changes in one component of the Earth system that eventually pass a critical threshold, or tipping point, after which impacts cascade through coupled climate-ecological-social systems. The chance of detecting abrupt changes and tipping points increases with the length of observations. The geological record provides the only long-term information we have on the conditions and processes that can drive physical, ecological and social systems into new states or organizational structures that may be irreversible within human time frames. Here, we use well-documented abrupt changes of the past 30 kyr to illustrate how their impacts cascade through the Earth system. We review useful indicators of upcoming abrupt changes, or early warning signals, and provide a perspective on the contributions of palaeoclimate science to the understanding of abrupt changes in the Earth system.

  • Impact of demographics and disease progression on the relationship between glucose and HbA1c
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0928-0987 .- 1879-0720. ; 104, s. 417-423
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context: Several studies have shown that the relationship between mean plasma glucose (MPG) and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) may vary across populations. Especially race has previously been referred to shift the regression line that links MPG to HbA1c at steady-state (Herman & Cohen, 2012).Objective: To assess the influence of demographic and disease progression-related covariates on the intercept of the estimated linear MPG-HbA1c relationship in a longitudinal model.Data: Longitudinal patient-level data from 16 late-phase trials in type 2 diabetes with a total of 8927 subjects was used to study covariates for the relationship between MPG and HbA1c. The analysed covariates included age group, HMI, gender, race, diabetes duration, and pre-trial treatment. Differences between trials were taken into account by estimating a trial-to-trial variability component.Participants: Participants included 47% females and 20% above 65 years. 77% were Caucasian, 9% were Asian, 5% were Black and the remaining 9% were analysed together as other races.Analysis: Estimates of the change in the intercept of the MPG-HbA1c relationship due to the mentioned covariates were determined using a longitudinal model. Results: The analysis showed that pre-trial treatment with insulin had the most pronounced impact associated with a 0.34% higher HbA1c at a given MPG. However, race, diabetes duration and age group also had an impact on the MPG-HbA1c relationship. Conclusion: Our analysis shows that the relationship between MPG and HbA1c is relatively insensitive to covariates, but shows small variations across populations, which may be relevant to take into account when predicting HbA1c response based on MPG measurements in clinical trials.

  • Overview of eutrophication indicators to assess environmental status within the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0272-7714 .- 1096-0015. ; 93:2, s. 117-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2009, following approval of the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD, 2008/56/EC), the European Commission (EC) created task groups to develop guidance for eleven quality descriptors that form the basis for evaluating ecosystem function. The objective was to provide European countries with practical guidelines for implementing the MSFD, and to produce a Commission Decision that encapsulated key points of the work in a legal framework. This paper presents a review of work carried out by the eutrophication task group, and reports our main findings to the scientific community. On the basis of an operational, management-oriented definition, we discuss the main methodologies that could be used for coastal and marine eutrophication assessment. Emphasis is placed on integrated approaches that account for physico-chemical and biological components, and combine both pelagic and benthic symptoms of eutrophication, in keeping with the holistic nature of the MSFD. We highlight general features that any marine eutrophication model should possess, rather than making specific recommendations. European seas range from highly eutrophic systems such as the Baltic to nutrient-poor environments such as the Aegean Sea. From a physical perspective, marine waters range from high energy environments of the north east Atlantic to the permanent vertical stratification of the Black Sea. This review aimed to encapsulate that variability, recognizing that meaningful guidance should be flexible enough to accommodate the widely differing characteristics of European seas, and that this information is potentially relevant in marine ecosystems worldwide. Given the spatial extent of the MSFD, innovative approaches are required to allow meaningful monitoring and assessment. Consequently, substantial logistic and financial challenges will drive research in areas such as remote sensing of harmful algal blooms, in situ sensor development, and mathematical models. Our review takes into account related legislation, and in particular the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD - 2000/60/EC), which deals with river basins, including estuaries and a narrow coastal strip, in order to examine these issues within the framework of integrated coastal zone management.

  • Developments in the MPI-M Earth System Model version 1.2 (MPI-ESM1.2) and Its Response to Increasing CO2
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems. - 1942-2466. ; 11:4, s. 998-1038
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new release of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology Earth System Model version 1.2 (MPI-ESM1.2) is presented. The development focused on correcting errors in and improving the physical processes representation, as well as improving the computational performance, versatility, and overall user friendliness. In addition to new radiation and aerosol parameterizations of the atmosphere, several relatively large, but partly compensating, coding errors in the model's cloud, convection, and turbulence parameterizations were corrected. The representation of land processes was refined by introducing a multilayer soil hydrology scheme, extending the land biogeochemistry to include the nitrogen cycle, replacing the soil and litter decomposition model and improving the representation of wildfires. The ocean biogeochemistry now represents cyanobacteria prognostically in order to capture the response of nitrogen fixation to changing climate conditions and further includes improved detritus settling and numerous other refinements. As something new, in addition to limiting drift and minimizing certain biases, the instrumental record warming was explicitly taken into account during the tuning process. To this end, a very high climate sensitivity of around 7 K caused by low-level clouds in the tropics as found in an intermediate model version was addressed, as it was not deemed possible to match observed warming otherwise. As a result, the model has a climate sensitivity to a doubling of CO2 over preindustrial conditions of 2.77 K, maintaining the previously identified highly nonlinear global mean response to increasing CO2 forcing, which nonetheless can be represented by a simple two-layer model.

  • Insulin sensitivity and metabolic control in response to pioglitazone treatment di er between patients with type 2 diabetes with and without the Pro12Ala variant in the PPAR 2 gene
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Diabetologia. - 0012-186X. ; 50:S1, s. S357-S358
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Aims: To evaluate the possible modifying e ect of the peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor gene (PPARG) polymorphism on the e ciency of pioglitazone (Actos®) treatment with regard to glycaemic control in both men and women with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Results: There were 248 patients with the Pro12Pro genotype and 78 with the Pro12Ala genotype, no di erence between females and males (p=0.78). HbA1c decreased signicantly between visits, in both females and males (p<0.001).Materials and Methods: A total of 326 patients with T2D, in a normal clinical practice setting, were treated with pioglitazone at the dose of 15–30 mg/day for 26 weeks, added to existing oral anti-diabetic medication. All were genotyped for the Pro12Ala variant of the PPARG. Insulin resistance and -cell function was calculated using HOMA model. Results: Tere were 248 patients with the Pro12Pro genotype and 78 with the Pro12Ala genotype, no difference between females and males (p=0.78). HbA1c decreased signicantly between visits, in both females and males (p<0.001).The difference between visits across gender depended on genotype, with a signicantly larger decrease in the Pro12Pro genotype (p=0.026). Insulin resistance fell signicantly across gender and genotype between visits (p< 0.001), but the change across gender was signi cantly greater for the Pro12Pro genotype (p=0.034), compared to baseline. Conclusion: In patients with T2D, the effects of pioglitazone treatment on metabolic control and insulin sensitivity may vary dependent on the wild type Pro12Pro variant of the PPAR gene. erefore, assessment of the Pro12Pro variant may in future prove to have clinical signi cance in the identi cation of patients with T2D who will bene t from pioglitazone treatment.
