- The focus of this contribution lies in the significance of cultural heritage for various institutional and state actors, and its connection to the well-being of democracy within the country. It is widely acknowledged that Poland, between World War II and 1989, was within the sphere of influence of the Soviet state. Consequently, the teaching and interpretation of history in schools had to adhere to guidelines established by the Ministry of Education. However, the fact that the state retains authority over curricula and syllabi, with specific state institutions responsible for designing the educational program, is generally accepted, and there is a general consensus that in liberal democracies, someone must oversee the school curriculum. At the same time, it is also widely recognized that state institutions and their work on educational policies, as well as the content of education, can be influenced by present political interests. Therefore, the more intriguing question arises: at what point does state influence over the public’s understanding of the country’s history become so significant that it can be considered as state intervention in the national cultural heritage? In other words, when does history in the public sphere become uncomfortably unfamiliar and incomprehensible to generations who have personally experienced the past?

- Under andra världskriget var Sveriges gränser svåra att korsa för dem som flydde från nazismens terror. Men bland de i Sverige som aktivt motarbetade nazismen och den restriktiva flyktingpolitiken fanns ett stort engagemang för att hjälpa flyktingar. Många kvinnor deltog. En av de frivilliga hjälparbetarna var Ingrid Segerstedt Wiberg. Som aktivist och senare Göteborgs stads kurator för statslösa flyktingar visade hon betydelsen av enskilda personers konkreta insatser – de kan göra skillnad. I denna artikel framhålls värdet av människors enskilda handlingar, speglade genom Ingrid Segerstedt Wiberg.

Texten analyserar polskt nationellt krigsminne och utgår ifrån skriftligt material i form av protokoll vilka samlades in av en forskningsgrupp i Lund 1945 (Polski Instytut Zrodlowy). Forskningsgruppen samarbetade med Sture Bolin, professor i historia vid Lunds universitet strax efter andra världskriget. Jag diskuterar skillnader mellan polskt och polskt judiskt krigsminne som utmanar den nationella karaktären av minneshistoria. Bidraget granskar även omständigheter vid protokollens insamling och samarbetet mellan Bolin och Zygmunt Lakocinski, en polsk intellektuell som hjälpte polska överlevande i Sverige 1945-1946.

- My research focuses the professionalization of the diplomatic affairs between Poland and Sweden in the late 1950s and in 1960s. During the Cold War, soft power was an important persuasive approach to international relations, typically involving cultural influence. At the end of 1950s the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has established so-called Propaganda Department which had the task to create and spread an image of Poland abroad. This presentation will provide some examples of this image by looking at the exhibitions organized in Sweden in the years 1956-1960. It will discuss what kind of image was created and how it was controlled by the Polish authorities.

- On June 28 in 1914, Gavrilo Princip killed the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife during their visit to Sarajevo. Meant as a symbolic act in support of the creation of a Yugoslavian nation, the assassination triggered lethal dynamics which affected all continents of the globe in the end. Austria- Hungary’s war of retaliation against Serbia was expected to be over in a matter of weeks. However, the global entanglements of an already highly globalized world witnessed the emergence of what British historian Eric Hobsbawm called the age of catastrophe.Within just a few days, the war had spread so widely that it became known as the Great War. Yet still we are not fully aware of its global reach beyond Europe and Northern America: The First World War is still narrated as a primarily European war. On the occasion of the 100 year anniversary of the Great War, scholars from various academic disciplines will discuss the global dimensions of those years of warfare on the eve of the age of globalisation. In particular, the conference will discuss the global phenomenon of war enthusiasm at the outbreak of the war and the failure of the international Socialism to avoid it along several papers. Furthermore, presentations and discussions will focus on the globally spread British Empire, as well as on North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia. Doing that, the conference tries to draw assumptions regarding the question of war and peace then and now.The State of Peace Conference will take place at the conference centre of the Austrian Study Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution (ASPR) at Schlaining Castle. The conference is organised by ASPR in close cooperation with its partner institutions from the Conflict, Peace and Democracy Cluster (CPDC): the Centre for Peace Research and Peace Education (ZFF) at the University of Klagenfurt, the Institute for Conflict Research (IKF) as well as the Democracy Centre Vienna.
